READ FOR THE RECORD’ KICKS OFF IN BROWARD COUNTY AT JOE DiMAGGIO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
October 21, 2024 – Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and Children’s Services Council of Broward County (CSC) partnered on the first of a series of events in support of “Broward: Read for the Record,” an annual CSC event that promotes early literacy by bringing together thousands of children and adults across Broward County to read the same book on the same day.
At the children’s hospital, United States Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Broward County School Board Vice Chair Debra Hixon, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital CEO Caitlin Stella, and Cindy Arenberg, president/CEO of Children’s Services
Council of Broward County, read Piper Chen Sings to kids undergoing treatment. The book, by Grammy winner and Tony-nominated actress Phillipa Soo and Maris Pasquale Doran, is a story about a young girl who loves to express herself through song. When asked to perform solo in front of an audience, Piper uses the nervous butterflies in her tummy to muster the courage to find her voice on stage.
This is the 10th year of Read for the Record in Broward County, but the first time an event was held to include kids from Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “We know that reading is an important part of a child’s enrichment and development, and an event like this is a welcome respite for kids undergoing treatment,” said Stella. “It also brings the children’s hospital to the center of the community and reinforces that we can use books to empower all kids.”

CORI Robot Enhances Orthopedic Surgery Capabilities at Jupiter Medical Center
October 22, 2024 – Jupiter, FL – Jupiter Medical Center is proud to announce the acquisition of its third orthopedic robot, the CORI Robotic-Assisted Surgical System. This state-of-the-art technology from Smith+Nephew is designed to enhance the precision and accuracy of joint replacement surgeries, providing patients with the advantage of advanced surgical planning while eliminating the need for CT/MRI scans.
The CORI Surgical System is an innovative, hand-held tool that operates without radiation. It enables orthopedic surgeons to customize knee replacement procedures to meet each patient’s unique requirements. In contrast to other robotics-assisted platforms, the CORI system facilitates real-time planning without needing a preoperative CT scan, thereby minimizing patient exposure to potentially harmful radiation.
At the beginning of the surgery, the CORI Surgical System generates a 3D digital model of the patient’s knee, allowing surgeons to select the ideal implant size and position for a customized fit tailored to the patient’s unique anatomy. Real-time feedback transmits precise information about the knee over 300 times per second, ensuring the joint is properly balanced, the damaged areas are effectively removed, and the implant is positioned with exceptional accuracy to improve functionality. The CORI Surgical System is available for both partial and total knee replacements, making it a versatile choice for surgeons.

Joe Echevarria brings passion to his new post as president of the U
OCTOBER 18, 2024 – Born and bred in the South Bronx, Joe Echevarria has always approached every challenge with passion, believing wholeheartedly that such a philosophy is one of the keys to success.
“All great things in life are accomplished by people who are passionate about what they do,” Echevarria once said.
As it turns out, he was right.
From the 50-cents-an-hour job he once held as a 14-year-old cleaning the restrooms at a neighborhood gas station to leading some 70,000 workers as the chief executive officer of a major consulting and tax firm, Echevarria took on every job he ever held with fervor.
Now, he will continue to apply that philosophy as the leader of the academic institution he fell in love with 50 years ago when he stepped on its campus as a freshman.
Echevarria is the new president of the University of Miami.
Following a consultative process with faculty members and key stakeholders, the Board of Trustees unanimously approved Echevarria’s new role, making him the seventh president in the University’s storied, nearly 100-year history and the first alumnus to lead the school he himself has described as “a powerful institution.”

October 21, 2024 — In recognition of Pediatric Bone and Joint Day, Palm Beach Health Network is raising awareness about the importance of early detection and treatment of orthopedic issues in children. Dr. Stephen Swirsky, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon on staff at West Boca Medical Center emphasizes that promoting bone and joint health from an early age is critical for long-term well-being.
“Children’s bones are constantly growing, which makes it vital to catch any potential orthopedic issues early on,” said Dr. Swirsky. “Conditions such as scoliosis, flat feet, or joint misalignments can develop quietly but have lasting effects if not addressed in time. Regular checkups and staying vigilant for any signs of discomfort or movement issues can make a big difference in a child’s future mobility and quality of life.”

NCH Recognized as a Premier Practice for Zephyr Valve Treatment
Naples, FL., October 21, 2024 Naples Comprehensive Health (NCH) has been recognized as a Premier Practice for its exceptional expertise in the treatment of patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema using the Zephyr® Valve, a revolutionary, minimally invasive device developed by Pulmonx. This designation places NCH among the top Zephyr Valve treating centers in the nation, acknowledging the high level of care provided to patients undergoing this advanced treatment.
The Zephyr Valve treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that is completed in about an hour and is designed to help patients breathe easier without surgery, so the benefits are achieved without many of the risks of traditional surgical options. The valves reduce lung hyperinflation by allowing trapped air to escape while preventing new air from entering the diseased lobe. This allows the healthier parts of the lung to function better and results in patients being able to breathe more easily and experience less shortness of breath.

Effort to Improve Lung Cancer Care for South Florida’s Hispanic Community Highlights Local Survivor’s Story
October 21, 2024 – Diversity and representation in clinical trials leads to better treatment options for all. Yet Hispanic individuals account for only 1 percent of clinical trial participants. Hispanic individuals deserve to benefit from the cutting-edge therapies clinical trials may offer. That’s why the American Lung Association is expanding its Awareness, Trust and Action campaign to Miami and Fort Lauderdale to raise awareness of clinical trials, address misconceptions and empower patients and caregivers. The goal of the program is to improve lung cancer care and outcomes for Hispanic communities locally and across the U.S.
Clinical trials are highly monitored research studies that try to find new and better ways to prevent, detect or treat a disease like lung cancer. Sometimes, clinical trials offer the most appropriate treatment option for a lung cancer patient, potentially saving or extending the participant’s life.

SMH Joins International Trial Testing Hybrid Cardiac Ablation Procedure in People with Inexplicably High Resting Heart Rates
SARASOTA, Fla. October 22, 2024 – Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is one of up to 40 research sites enrolling patients in the international HEAL-IST trial, a clinical study evaluating a hybrid ablation procedure for people with inexplicably high resting heart rates.IST, short for inappropriate sinus tachycardia, is a challenging condition in otherwise healthy people that causes the heart to race over 100 beats per minute at rest, and dangerously higher with activity. IST is thought to be caused by dysfunction of the sinus node – the heart’s natural pacemaker – or issues with the body’s nervous system.
Currently, there are no FDA-approved therapies to treat IST. Medications like beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, and ivabradine are usual first treatments, but often are ineffective. Sinus node modification and radiofrequency sinus node ablation also have been used, but the interventional techniques often involve a higher risk of complications.
