Miami Transplant Institute Becomes First Center in the United States to Use New Lung Preservation System

June 17, 2025 – On June 5, 2025, Miami Transplant Institute (MTI) became the first center in the United States to use the X Port Lung Preservation System by Traferox to transport donor lungs from a hospital in the northeast U.S. to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) underwent a lung transplant surgery and received the gift of life.

This newly FDA-approved organ transport unit preserves the donor lungs at 10°C for up to 12 hours, allowing transplant surgeries to happen at the optimal time of day with the goal of better outcomes for the patient and the surgical team.

“This preservation strategy allows us to keep the donor lungs preserved for longer, which allows the transplant surgery to then become a semi-elective procedure,” said Mauricio Pipkin, MD, surgical director of lung transplant at MTI, and surgical director of The Lung Center at Jackson Health System. “This allows us to go further for donor lungs, and allows us to preserve the donor lungs for a longer time, so we can get our patients transplanted quickly and efficiently.”

Holy Cross Health Receives $596,250 ViiV Healthcare Positive Action Grant

Funds will be used to create a support network for providers of HIV/AIDS care

June 16, 2025 – Holy Cross Health has received a three-year grant from ViiV Positive Action Network to develop a support network for peers and professionals providing social services to people living with HIV/AIDS. Florida remains one of the highest states in the nation to report new cases of HIV and syphilis.

As cases continue to soar, the Holy Cross Health Community Health and Well-Being department continues its efforts to respond. Many individuals find themselves having to learn to navigate the complex and changing health care system. The Navigator Network newly funded by ViiV will offer quarterly in-person and monthly online meetings with the goal of bringing case managers, peers, community health workers and other client-facing specialists together to discuss resources, challenges and positive outcomes. Future endeavors supported by the grant also include an illustrated video series explaining Florida’s Ryan White care system, an online resource guide and Navigator Network Hub on Holy Cross’ website.

While HIV can impact people regardless of their sex, age, race/ethnicity or sexual orientation, certain groups experience a greater risk of HIV than others. HIV continues to have a significant impact in the United States, affecting approximately 1.2 million people. The highest rates of new HIV diagnoses are in the South, accounting for nearly half of new infections. Despite advances in prevention efforts and drug therapies, efforts are needed to address the social determinants of health and ensure equitable access to prevention and treatment services. If HIV goes untreated, it can lead to severe health complications and eventually progress to Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

Unstoppable and Strong after Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery

June 18, 2025 = Yusimi Valdes Miranda’s shoulder injuries didn’t happen suddenly. The 39-year-old mother of three, who also cares for her five dogs and a horse, says the damage came from years of pushing herself too hard in the gym. Her high pain tolerance led her to ignore the discomfort she felt in both shoulders. It wasn’t until the pain got so bad that she couldn’t do the normal activities and care for her family that she decided to see a doctor.

“Imagine having three kids and not being able to lift or play with them,” said Yusimi. “Before my surgeries, I couldn’t throw a ball, I wasn’t able to look back in the car. It was quite miserable.”

While Yusimi was experiencing pain in both shoulders, the pain in her left shoulder was the most significant. When she first met her doctor, Jason Walters, M.D., an orthopedic sports medicine doctor with the Broward Health Physician Group, Yusimi says they just clicked. She appreciated how patiently he explained things to her and how special it made her feel when he remembered details of her life from one visit to the next.

June 17, 2025 – Jackson Heart Institute’s adult heart surgery program has earned the coveted 3-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG) and multi-procedural surgeries across all analyzed Jackson Heart Institute procedures in the STS data-base. A Safe Haven for Newborns’ Partnership with Hospitals, Fire Stations and Emergency Medical Services is Saving Lives

24 Years Dedicated to Saving the Most Innocent Among Us, the Newborn

June 17, 2025 – The Gloria M. Silverio Foundation, 501 C(3), d/b/a A Safe Haven for Newborns is dedicated to ending infant abandonment. Since the program began 24 years ago, 427 newborns have been given a chance to grow up in the heart of a caring family — 417 in Florida, nine in other states and one in Honduras.

Founder Nick Silverio knew from the start that for the program to be successful he would need to work closely with the hospitals, fire stations and emergency medical services (EMS). Silverio reached out to key personnel for their input and to ensure that everyone felt comfortable and knew what steps to follow when a newborn is surrendered to their care. He built this special partnership based on trust, respect, and a common mission to help those in need. “What the program has done is bridge that gap. It gives them [the mothers] hope that the baby can have a great life and a successful future, to be loved by a family,” said Kingman Schuldt, Former Fire Chief, Greater Naples Fire Rescue District.

In order to help facilitate the direct safe surrender of an infant, the Foundation provides online training to all 24/7 “Safe Haven” facilities and law enforcement agencies. Over 20,000 professionals have taken the online training program that is offered at no cost to them. “The success of the Safe Haven for Newborns program lies with its strong bond with the hospitals and fire/EMS stations,” said Silverio. The Foundation does not publicize the surrender of a newborn to protect the mother’s anonymity in the community.

FAU Awarded $1M to Prevent Medication-related Harm, Falls in Older Adults

June 18, 2025 – Researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine have received a $1 million grant from the Florida Medical Malpractice Joint Underwriting Association to launch a new initiative: the Geriatric Emergency Department Pharmacologic Harm Prevention Project (GREAT PHARM). This program seeks to reduce falls and other adverse drug events (ADEs) among older adults by using pharmacogenomic-guided prescribing, a personalized approach that tailors medications to an individual’s genetic profile.

As America’s population ages, the risks associated with polypharmacy – taking multiple medications simultaneously – are becoming increasingly urgent. In the United States, nearly 1 in 4 adults aged 65 years and older falls each year, making falls the leading cause of injury-related death in this age group. These falls account for more than 36,000 deaths and more than 3 million emergency department visits annually. Many of these falls are preventable and closely linked to medication-related complications.
