THE HEALTH CARE DISTRICT OF PALM BEACH COUNTY SHARES FIREWORKS INJURY DATA AHEAD OF THE JULY FOURTH HOLIDAY

July 1. 2024- As we approach the July Fourth holiday, the Health Care District of Palm Beach County’s Trauma Agency is sharing data on traumatic injuries caused by fireworks and offering tips to prevent these injuries. Over the past year (June 2023 – May 2024), 11 Palm Beach County residents or visitors were treated for traumatic injuries related to fireworks, including five children aged 12-17. Approximately 60 percent of these critical injuries occurred during last year’s July Fourth festivities. About 40 percent occurred during New Year’s Eve.

These statistics encompass all patients treated at the county’s two Level 1 trauma centers, Delray Medical Center and St. Mary’s Medical Center, who met trauma alert criteria requiring they receive highly specialized, time-sensitive care.

Common injuries from fireworks include:

•Burns, particularly affecting the hands, fingers and face

•Eye injuries, such as contusions, lacerations and foreign bodies in the eye

•Hand injuries, which can include lacerations, fractures and even amputations

•Hearing damage from loud explosions, which can cause temporary or permanent hearing loss

•Injuries from fireworks that explode unexpectedly or go in the wrong direction

•Smoke inhalation, which can cause respiratory issues

“Fireworks are a festive July Fourth tradition that can pose significant health risks if not handled properly,” Belma Andric, MD, MPH, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for the Health Care District of Palm Beach County. “It’s crucial to handle fireworks with caution and follow all safety guidelines to protect yourself and your loved ones from potential harm.”

July 1, 2024 – Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute performs its first advanced “aortic arch” replacement surgery using the normothermic “total arch replacement” (TAR) approach. Mehrdad Ghoreishi, M.D., co-director of aortic surgery and medical director of cardiac surgery research at Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute performed the first case.

This technique differs from a traditional total aortic arch replacement which needs to lower a patient’s core body temperature to as low as 20 degrees Celsius, slow down cellular activity, and allow blood circulation to be stopped for up to 40 minutes. The surgery usually takes up to seven hours.

DELRAY MEDICAL CENTER’S NEW “VERTICAL” EMERGENCY ROOM AIMS TO SPEED UP CARE FOR PATIENTS WITH LESS SERIOUS HEALTH ISSUES

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – July 1st, 2024 – Delray Medical Center has opened its new “Vertical” Emergency Room (ER) to help speed up care for patients with less serious health issues. The ER is designed so staff can treat patients who are seated, rather than having them lie down on a bed as is typically required for patients needing higher acuity care.

In a traditional ER, where emergency staff care for patients who are lying on a bed or a stretcher, longer wait times and inefficiencies in treatment can occur when patients who are less ill or not as seriously injured do not require this higher level of care. In the new Delray Medical Center Vertical ER, patients with less acute health issues can relax in comfortable recliners while being treated, optimizing efficiency and minimizing unnecessary delays.

UMBILICAL CORD MILKING DOES NOT APPEAR TO INCREASE RISK OF NEURODEVELOPMENTAL DELAY IN NON-VIGOROUS INFANTS

NIH-funded study suggests blood-sparing treatment a safe alternative to current standard.

July 1, 2024 – A treatment to move blood from the umbilical cord into the body of newborns who are limp, pale and with minimal breathing, known as non-vigorous, does not appear to increase the risk of neurodevelopmental impairment, according to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The study included nearly 1,000 full-term and near-term infants. Researchers compared the treatment, known as umbilical cord milking, to early clamping and cutting of the cord — undertaken so resuscitation efforts can begin as soon as possible.

HEALTH FOUNDATION OF SOUTH FLORIDA PARTNERS WITH GREEN CARS FOR KIDS TO PROVIDE FREE ELECTRIC VEHICLE TRANSPORTATION FOR UNDERSERVED PREGNANT WOMEN AND BABIES IN SOUTH FLORIDA

JUNE 26, 2024  – Health Foundation of South Florida and Green Cars for Kids (GCFK) are thrilled to announce the launch of “Free Babee,” a pilot project that provides free car rides for underserved pregnant women and children in South Florida. This innovative program, developed by Dr. Catherine Toms, a public health physician, addresses the dire needs and potential medical risks of pregnant women lacking reliable transportation. The program is poised to transform perinatal and infant health outcomes by increasing accessibility to maternal health appointments while also reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions that disproportionately affect frontline communities.

GCFK, in partnership with Freebee, the electric vehicle service that provides free rides through cities and universities, is set to make a significant impact. This collaboration will enable the use of electric vehicles, provide essential transportation to medical appointments at no cost to those in need, and demonstrate the power of collaboration in achieving shared goals.

Dr. Toms, the executive director of Green Cars for Kids, shared her motivation behind the initiative, stating, “There’s a huge gap in poor health outcomes that we can easily prevent simply by providing safe, friendly, and easy rides for pregnant women and babies to get to their regularly scheduled medical appointments.” GCFK aims to bridge this gap using electric vehicles, simultaneously providing transportation for families in need and reducing air pollution.
