Cleveland Clinic’s Weston Hospital Reaches Liver, Heart Transplant Milestones
Hospital using leading edge perfusion technology to improve liver transplant outcomes
August 21, 2024 – Cleveland Clinic’s Weston Hospital continues to make history as its transplant program recently celebrated two significant milestones. The hospital’s liver transplant team performed its 500th liver transplant and the heart transplant team completed its 300th heart transplant.
The 500th liver was transplanted using an advanced perfusion system, which pumps oxygenated blood through a deceased donor liver. The new technology helps preserve the liver before it is transplanted. Research shows that liver perfusion has helped reduce the risk of complications and patients go home sooner. The new technology can also improve the quality of the organ which may lead to greater organ availability for patients who need a liver transplant.
The 300th heart was transplanted to 40-year-old Michael Scarlett who was diagnosed with idiopathic viral cardiomyopathy, which led to heart failure. Prior to the transplant, he had suffered several strokes.
The Weston Hospital’s transplant program continues to grow since its inception in 2013 when the hospital received approval from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) to perform adult liver and kidney transplants. In 2014, it received approval to perform adult heart transplants. In 2021, the Weston Hospital began performing living donor liver transplants and is one of the only transplant centers in South Florida offering this procedure.

Amavita Heart and Vascular HealthTM Raises Awareness about Peripheral Artery Disease
Leading healthcare provider urges community members to prioritize their vascular health and get screened this September.
AUGUST 21, 2024 – In recognition of September being Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Month, Amavita Heart and Vascular HealthTM (Amavita Health), a trusted name in cardiac and vascular care, is committed to raising awareness about PAD and encouraging individuals to take proactive steps towards better vascular health. PAD is a serious condition that affects blood flow to the limbs and can lead to severe complications if left untreated. Through education and early detection, Amavita Health aims to empower the community to prioritize their circulatory health and seek timely screenings.
Peripheral artery disease occurs when there is a buildup of fatty deposits (plaque) in the arteries that supply blood to the extremities, most commonly the legs. This condition can result in reduced blood flow, leading to leg pain, cramping, weakness, and even non-healing wounds. Left unaddressed, PAD can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular complications.
Dr. Pedro Martinez-Clark, the renowned vascular specialist, emphasized the importance of awareness and early detection: “Peripheral artery disease is often underdiagnosed, yet it poses a significant threat to individuals’ overall health and quality of life. By shedding light on this condition during PAD Month, we hope to encourage more people to recognize the symptoms, understand the risk factors, and take the initiative to get screened. Early detection allows for timely intervention, making a remarkable difference in preventing further complications.”

Expert alert: Surgical approaches being studied to restore function after stroke
JACKSONVILLE, Florida – August 21, 2024 — Stroke affects 15 million people worldwide every year, with most stroke-related surgery occurring during the patient’s acute phase. An estimated half of those people will live with permanent or chronic disability. Researchers continue to study ways that may help patients regain function later, says Chris Fox M.D., a neurosurgeon at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.
A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted. An ischemic stroke, the most common type, is caused by a blocked artery in the brain. With hemorrhagic strokes, a blood vessel in the brain leaks or bursts and causes bleeding in the brain. Blockage of blood flow leads to cell death, and the longer the blockage lasts, the more brain cells are injured. When bleeding in the brain occurs, cells are injured due to increased pressure within the brain and from direct injury from the blood and its subsequent breakdown.

Andrea Krenek UF olive oil study suggests ‘less-is-more’ approach
August 21 2024- As a staple of plant-based diets like the Mediterranean diet, olive oil has long been lauded for its ability to lower heart disease risk. A recently published University of Florida study, however, suggests other elements of that diet may play a greater role in achieving health benefits.
The Recipe for Heart Health study is the culmination of collaboration between researchers from the UF/IFAS food science and human nutrition department, the UF Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, the nine-week study followed 40 adults between 18 and 79 for 11 months. The participants had various health factors that met classifications for placing them at risk for cardiovascular disease.

Self-adjusting brain pacemaker may help reduce Parkinson’s disease symptoms
Implanted device responds to changes in brain biomarkers of Parkinson’s symptoms by adjusting stimulation, allowing the treatment to be tailored to a patient’s needs in real time.Starr lab
Small NIH-funded trial shows the promise of personalized medicine.
August 20, 0224 – A small feasibility study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that an implanted device regulated by the body’s brain activity could provide continual and improved treatment for the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) in certain people with the disorder. This type of treatment, called adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS), is an improvement on a technique that has been used for PD and other brain disorders for many years. The study found aDBS was markedly more effective at controlling PD symptoms compared to conventional DBS treatments.
“This study marks a big step forward towards developing a DBS system that adapts to what the individual patient needs at a given time,” said Megan Frankowski, Ph.D., program director for NIH’s Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies® Initiative, or The BRAIN Initiative®, which helped fund this project. “By helping to control residual symptoms while not exacerbating others, adaptive DBS has the potential to improve the quality of life for some people living with Parkinson’s disease.”
DBS involves implanting fine wires called electrodes into the brain at specific locations. These wires then deliver electrical signals that can help mitigate the symptoms of brain disorders such as PD. Conventional DBS provides a constant level of stimulation and can also lead to unwanted side effects, because the brain does not always need the same strength of treatment. Therefore, aDBS uses data taken directly from a person’s brain and uses machine learning to adjust the level of stimulation in real time as the person’s needs change over time.
