USAHS Miami faculty and PT students join Sabrina’s Adaptive Beach Days for hands-on lessons in making the beach more accessible.
CORAL GABLES, FLA. – September 3, 2024 – As Floridians, we take a day at the beach for granted, but for individuals with disabilities, its an elusive pastime that becomes a reality only through a special program on Miami Beach.
“It’s challenging trying to get the beach wheelchairs in and out of the water and then fighting with the waves. It takes a lot of muscle!” says volunteer Olivia D’Auria, a seventh-term student at University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences (USAHS) in Miami. D’Auria and others in the USAHS Miami Student Physical Therapy Association volunteered for this summers’ Adaptive Beach Days, held monthly on Miami Beach by the Sabrina Cohen Foundation.
Professor Caprice Quinones, PT, DPT, introduces students in her Neuro classes to individuals with spinal cord injuries and Sabrina’s Adaptive Beach Days to expose them to what she calls one of PT’s niche practices.
“There are so many areas to explore in physical therapy. The majority of students start out saying they want to work as a sport PT, and by the end they want to go a totally different route,” says Dr. Quinones, who has worked with patients with neurological disease in inpatient, outpatient, and home health settings. Her quest to “expand students’ horizons” paid off with D’Auria.

Using a molecular scissors to improve CAR-T cell therapy
September 12 2024 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic researchers mined the molecular foundations of cancer and uncovered a new reason chimeric antigen receptor (CAR-T cell therapy) fails in some patients. This discovery has fueled new strategies that incorporate antibodies and gene editing to improve the outcome of this breakthrough treatment for patients. This research by Saad Kenderian, M.B., Ch.B., a consultant in Hematology at Mayo Clinic, is published in Nature Communications.
“This is a very exciting discovery that offers new hope of overcoming challenges of CAR-T cell therapy that many cancer patients experience,” says Dr. Kenderian, senior author. “We describe for the first time a mechanism causing the resistance and failure of CAR-T cells, which lies within a protein routinely made by the engineered cells. This research puts us on a new path for improving the longevity of CAR-T cell therapy.”
CAR-T cell therapy is a regenerative immunotherapy in which a person’s T cells are collected from the body and genetically modified in the lab to target proteins on tumors. The engineered T cells are returned to the patient, where they act as a living drug that continually harnesses the power of the immune system to recognize and destroy tumors.

NCH Hosts World’s First Procedure Using Arthrex Synergy Vision™ Technology with CYTALUX to Visualize Lung and Ovarian Cancers
September 13, 2024 NCH is proud to announce a groundbreaking achievement in the field of minimally invasive surgery by hosting the world’s first procedure utilizing the revolutionary Arthrex Synergy Vision™ imaging system in conjunction with the targeted imaging agent CYTALUX. This pioneering procedure marks a significant advancement in the visualization of lung and ovarian cancers, offering new hope to patients battling these challenging diseases.
The Arthrex, FDA-cleared Synergy Vision system is a state-of-the-art imaging platform that integrates advanced visualization capabilities into minimally invasive surgeries. By utilizing high-definition imaging and real-time fluorescence, the system allows surgeons to distinguish between healthy and cancerous tissues with greater clarity, reducing the likelihood of leaving behind malignant cells. This first-ever Cancer Illumination™ procedure with the Synergy Vision system was performed by NCH Rooney Heart Institute Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Robert Pascotto, MD.
This cutting-edge technology works by enhancing the detection of cancer cells after the administration of CYTALUX, a targeted imaging agent that has been specifically approved by the FDA for use in patients with lung and ovarian cancers. Its mechanism of action involves binding to folate receptors, which are overexpressed on the surface of cancer cells. Once administered, CYTALUX illuminates these cells, making them more visible under the Synergy Vision system’s fluorescence imaging. This technology is particularly beneficial in identifying small or difficult-to-see tumors, which may otherwise be missed during surgery.

Gut bacteria could unlock prevention of Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s disease, UF/IFAS study suggests
September 12, 2024 — Can “good” gut bacteria protect against neurodegenerative diseases?
That’s what researchers at UF/IFAS want to know.
The study, published in iScience on Tuesday, suggests that specific “good” gut bacteria could contribute to preventing these diseases, said Daniel Czyz, assistant professor in the UF/IFAS department of microbiology and cell science. He conducted the study along with Alyssa Walker, a UF/IFAS postdoctoral scholar, and a team of undergraduate students.
One of the key takeaways from the study is that specific bacteria from the gut microbiome affected the proteins associated with neurodegenerative diseases. The team looked at 229 strains of bacteria to see how they affected these proteins.
The team also demonstrated that when the good bacteria colonized in combination with the “bad” bacteria – or bacteria that are suspected of contributing to neurodegenerative diseases – the beneficial microbes canceled out the “bad” ones, he said.
