KIDZ Genetics Physician Makes Neurofibromatosis Her Life’s Mission
By Vanessa Orr
When Dr. Mislen Bauer first started the Neurofibromatosis Program at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital 40 years ago, little did she know that she would develop a reputation as “the spot lady”—a moniker she proudly shares.
“I see a lot of kids with spots,” she says of one of the main symptoms of neurofibromatosis, a group of genetic disorders that cause tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body. “This condition is not as rare as people think; it affects one in 3,000 babies.”
Children with neurofibromatosis often develop flat, brown birthmarks on their bodies before age two, as well as freckles in areas not exposed to the sun, like the armpit or groin.
“A lot of people can have similar spots, but if a child has more than six spots with well-defined borders that are very flat and café-au-lait colored, in time, they may develop tiny little nodules that appear wherever they have a nerve,” explained Dr. Bauer.
While these tumors can be benign, if they develop on the optic nerve, it can cause severe damage to a child’s vision. Approximately 4 percent of children with neurofibromatosis develop facial deformities, and tumors can also form on the extremities, as well as in the brain, chest and abdomen.
“Another issue that these children face is that 70 percent of them with normal IQs have learning disabilities,” Dr. Bauer added. “A lot of them are bullied and don’t finish high school, so I’ve dedicated my life to helping them not fall through the cracks.”
Dr. Bauer, who serves as the director of both the Craniofacial Center and the Neurofibromatosis Program at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, first became interested in neurofibromatosis when she was introduced to a child with an unusual tibia fracture that would not heal who showed café-au-lait spots.

ACHE of South Florida Member Spotlight September 2025: Robert Dahl
By Lois Thomson
Two key episodes in his life brought Robert Dahl, MBA, FACHE, to his current position as CEO of Broward Health Imperial Point. The first decision point occurred upon graduating from undergrad searching for his first employer, and discerning which industry to pursue. He was considering a career in choosing between work in computer sciences or healthcare. Dahl tried the computer industry first for a while, but quickly pivoted to healthcare. He built relationships, made the most of opportunities that presented, worked hard, and climbed his way up the ranks within hospital administration.
The second life event occurred when Dahl, who is originally from the Chicago area, worked with his partners and sold a national perioperative and anesthesia consulting firm to a company in Sunrise, Fla. “I consulted in some of the Florida markets, and in particular at Memorial Regional with the team. We had a very successful consulting engagement and that got me exposed to Southern Florida.” He said he and his wife Michelle spent a lot of wintertime in Southern Florida, the Keys, and the Caribbean, and really enjoy this part of the country. What’s not to love, right?
Dahl joined Broward Health in December of last year as the CEO of Imperial Point Hospital and is also responsible for and contributes to the system’s perioperative and anesthesia services. As he explained in more detail, “Being the CEO of a hospital means I’m in charge of and ensuring for the quality, safety, growth, revenues, and strategic planning for the hospital campus in conjunction with how it integrates within the health system.” He discussed what he likes best about his work, saying: “I’ve always had a servant leader mentality. I consider myself to be a strong operator, and I love improving operational efficiencies, putting all aspects of the care continuum together to improve the patient experience and quality outcomes for patients.”

Exploring A Promising Combination Therapy for Leukemia
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
Broward Health is helping to investigate an immunotherapy and chemotherapy treatment that could help prevent recurrence and chronic complications in some children with leukemia.
The Children’s Oncology Group opened a multicenter, international, Phase 3 clinical trial investigating the use of blinatumomab, a type of immunotherapy, in combination with chemotherapy for children with newly diagnosed B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) in 2019.
Broward Health was one of hundreds of centers to enroll patients in the study, offering the trial to both inpatients and outpatients. An estimated 6,720 patients were enrolled across all participating sites.
“The goal of this trial is to see whether adding blinatumomab to the usual chemotherapy can further reduce relapses in children with standard-risk B-ALL,” said Hector Rodriguez-Cortes, M.D., medical director of pediatric hematology/ oncology and principal investigator of pediatric cancer research at Broward Health. “The hope is to improve long-term survival without dramatically increasing side effects by lowering the chance of leukemia returning.”

Nicklaus Children’s Heart Institute First to Offer Innovative Heart Stent Designed for Babies
New FDA-approved Minima Stent grows with a child’s heart, preventing the need for open heart surgeries
August 28, 2025 — Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Heart Institute is ushering in a new era of cardiac treatment for children across South Florida. Nicklaus Children’s is the first hospital in South Florida to offer the latest innovative Minima Stent from Renata Medical, the first FDA-approved heart stent that expands as the child grows. This innovation gives new hope to babies and young children with congenital heart disease, helping them avoid repeated open-heart surgeries.
The Minima Stent is the first and only stent engineered for children’s cardiovascular system. Unlike traditional stents, which are designed for adults and have limited expansion, the Minima Stent can be safely dilated as a child grows. This adaptability reduces the need for repeated surgical interventions to treat conditions such as coarctation of the aorta and branch pulmonary stenosis.
“This is an exciting milestone for the children of South Florida and around the country,” said Dr. Sathanandam, chief of cardiovascular medicine and co-director of the Nicklaus Children’s Heart Institute, who helped pioneer the technology alongside Renata Medical leaders. “When we created this technology, the goal was to address a long-standing gap in pediatric cardiology by providing a safe, expandable solution tailored to the unique needs of growing children. At Nicklaus Children’s, we are proud to lead the way in bringing this transformative technology to South Florida.”

Cleveland Clinic Accelerates Clinical Trial Recruitment with Roll Out of Dyania Health’s Artificial Intelligence Platform Across Health System
August 27, 2025- Cleveland Clinic and Dyania Health today announced a collaboration to integrate Dyania Health’s Synapsis™ AI platform across Cleveland Clinic’s clinical research enterprise. This follows successful pilot programs in cardiology and oncology, as well as a unique effort where the teams jointly validated the technology’s effectiveness in neurology during an intensive testing period.
Together, the organizations aim to accelerate clinical trial recruitment by using medically trained large language models (LLMs) to speed up and scale patient identification for research studies, providing more patients faster access to potentially beneficial therapies.
Clinical trial recruitment remains one of the most persistent barriers to scientific progress. Approximately 80% of clinical trials do not meet enrollment timelines and 50% of trial sites fail to enroll any patients. By using artificial intelligence to automate chart review and rapidly identify eligible participants, Cleveland Clinic and Dyania Health are addressing these traditional enrollment bottlenecks and expanding patient access to potentially life-saving therapies.
“The future of medicine depends on building research systems that are precise, efficient, fair, and deeply connected to patient care,” said Lara Jehi, M.D., Chief Research Information Officer at Cleveland Clinic. “Through our innovative work with Dyania Health, we are creating an AI-driven foundation that helps identify the right patients for the right trials at the right time. This collaboration reflects our commitment to expanding access to clinical research and designing a research infrastructure that works for both investigators and the patients we serve.”

Cleveland Clinic Research Finds Injectable Obesity Medications Associated with Reduced Risk for Eye Inflammation
Findings suggest GLP-1RA medications pose potential eye anti-inflammatory benefit
August 28, 2025 – Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute researchers have identified a potential association between the use of GLP-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) therapy and a reduced risk of non-infectious uveitis, a type of eye inflammation.
Uveitis is an inflammatory eye condition that affects the uvea, the middle layer of the eye, and can also impact surrounding structures like the retina. It can cause eye pain, redness, and blurred vision, and in more severe or untreated cases, it can lead to permanent vision loss. Worldwide, there are about 4 million new cases diagnosed each year.
The study found GLP-1RA use was associated with a significantly lower risk of developing new onset non-infectious uveitis compared to control patients, as well as those on insulin and metformin.
The findings, published today in JAMA Ophthalmology, suggest potential anti-inflammatory benefits beyond glycemic control and a possible protective association between GLP-1RA therapy and uveitis risk.
Certain populations are at an increased risk of developing uveitis including those with a family history, patients with a genetic predisposition, and patients with other autoimmune diseases. For patients in these populations who meet the indication for diabetic or weight loss medication, this research is promising because being prescribed GLP1-RAs may have the additional benefit of decreasing the risk of new onset non-infectious uveitis.

Healthcare Network ‘tops off’ the Van Domelen Community Health Center
Orangetree’s first comprehensive health center set to welcome patients in 2026
August 28, 2025 – Healthcare Network, a nonprofit organization working to ensure primary medical care is accessible to everyone in the community, held a topping-off ceremony for the construction of the Van Domelen Community Health Center. The $15-million medical complex will ensure that more than 41,000 residents in the Orangetree area, including Golden Gate Estates, will have access to high-quality medical care.
Celebrating the structural completion of the building, DeAngelis Diamond led the ceremonial raising of the final steel beam into the framework, a major construction milestone for the two-story, 20,000-square-foot medical complex.
The once-rural region of Orangetree is now one of Southwest Florida’s fastest-growing areas, but it remains a “healthcare desert” without any health clinics or medical centers.
“From Collier Boulevard and Immokalee Road, all the way to Ave Maria, there are no doctors,” said Jamie Ulmer, president and CEO of Healthcare Network. “For far too long, the Orangetree community has not had access to critical, essential medical services.

Secretaries Kennedy, McMahon Demand Comprehensive Nutrition Education Reforms
AUGUST 27, 2025—The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) with the support of the U.S. Department of Education today announced a major initiative urging America’s leading medical education organizations to immediately implement comprehensive nutrition education and training. The effort is part of the Trump Administration and Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s Make America Healthy Again agenda, which prioritizes prevention and reducing chronic disease through improved diet and public health measures. Watch Secretary Kennedy’s direct to camera video and read his Wall Street Journal commentary.
Each year, an estimated 1 million Americans die from diet-related chronic diseases, even as the U.S. spends more than $4.4 trillion annually on chronic disease and mental health care. Despite overwhelming evidence that nutrition is one of the most powerful tools for disease prevention, the vast majority of physicians graduate with little to no training in nutrition counseling.
“Medical schools talk about nutrition but fail to teach it,” said Secretary Kennedy. “We demand immediate, measurable reforms to embed nutrition education across every stage of medical training, hold institutions accountable for progress, and equip every future physician with the tools to prevent disease—not just treat it.”

Trump Administration Puts 46 States and Territories on Notice to Remove Gender Ideology Content from Sex Ed Materials
August 26, 2025 – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) through its Administration for Children and Families (ACF) demanded that 46 states and territories remove all references to gender ideology in their federally-funded Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) educational materials within 60 days. This action reflects the Trump Administration’s ongoing commitment to protecting children from attempts to indoctrinate them with delusional ideology.
Last week, ACF terminated California’s PREP grant after the state failed to meet its demand to remove gender ideology from its educational materials. States and territories receiving these new letters are now on notice: failure to comply will result in similar enforcement actions including the withholding, suspension, or termination of federal PREP funding.
“Accountability is coming,” said Acting Assistant Secretary Andrew Gradison. “Federal funds will not be used to poison the minds of the next generation or advance dangerous ideological agendas. The Trump Administration will ensure that PREP reflects the intent of Congress, not the priorities of the left.”
