FAU Secures $1.3M NIH Grant for Breakthrough in HIV Self-Test Technology

Engineering and Biomedical Researchers Will Develop Rapid, Easy-to-Use, Low-cost HIV Testing Platform

BOCA RATON, Fla. –  April 1, 2025 – As of the end of 2023, nearly 40 million people worldwide were living with HIV, including approximately 1.2 million in the United States. In the same year, about 630,000 people globally died from AIDS-related illnesses. Although this is a significant decline from previous years, AIDS-related deaths remain a critical global health challenge.

While antiretroviral therapy (ART) has improved the life expectancy of people with AIDS, a lack of effective diagnostics and disease management tools has hindered its global implementation. Only 59% of those in need have access to treatment, and about one in four people living with HIV are unaware of their status. Additionally, individuals on ART who adhere to uninterrupted treatment may experience viral rebound between viral load tests, remaining unaware of treatment failure and potentially infectious for weeks or even months.

A major challenge in combating HIV is the lack of self-testing technologies that can detect new infections during the first two weeks (acute phase) or identify viral rebound in patients on ART. To date, no self-test has been developed to detect HIV in the acute phase or during viral rebound in suppressed patients.

These infections disproportionately impact severely ill patients and those with weakened immune systems, including individuals undergoing cancer chemotherapy, living with HIV, and who have had organ transplants.

NIH trial shows new form of TIL therapy effective against colon, rectum, pancreas, and bile duct tumors.

April 1, 2025 – A new form of tumor infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy, a form of personalized cancer immunotherapy, dramatically improved the treatment’s effectiveness in patients with metastatic gastrointestinal cancers, according to results of a clinical trial led by researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The findings, published April 1, 2025 in Nature Medicine(link is external), offer hope that this therapy could be used to treat a variety of solid tumors, which has so far eluded researchers developing cell-based therapies.

This form of therapy involves identifying and selecting immune cells (TILs) that are found in the tumor that specifically recognize and attack a patient’s tumor cells. Next, scientists grow those TILs into large quantities in the laboratory before they are finally administered to the patient.
