Jackson Health Foundation Celebrates Historic $15 Million Gift From Double-Lung Transplant Survivor Carlos Peralta Transformational donation expands lung ICU and names the Carlos Peralta and Family Lung Unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital
October 5, 2026 — Jackson Health Foundation today announced a historic $15 million contribution from prominent Mexican businessman and philanthropist Carlos Peralta and his family. In recognition of this transformational gift, Jackson Health System formally named its specialized pulmonary facility the Carlos Peralta and Family Lung Unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
The contribution will expand Jackson’s lung intensive care unit capabilities, support seamless emergency care routing, equip the facility with cutting-edge medical technology, expand specialized clinical research, and elevate patient care for individuals facing end-stage lung disease. The center operates with the full backing of the Miami Transplant Institute (MTI), an affiliation between Jackson Health System and UHealth – University of Miami Health System that ranks as the number-one transplant program in Florida and a top-10 program nationally for transplant volume, according to the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients.
For Peralta, chairman and chief executive officer of Grupo IUSA, the historic gift represents a profound sense of gratitude after facing a terminal medical crisis. Diagnosed with end-stage pulmonary fibrosis, a condition that severely impairs breathing and oxygen absorption, he urgently required a double-lung transplant. Despite having the ability to seek treatment anywhere in the world, Peralta turned to MTI for its specialized surgical expertise and rapid donor availability. READ MORE

FAMU-FSU COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING RESEARCHERS DEVELOP WAVE-SHAPED WALL AND ROOF DESIGNS THAT PROTECT AGAINST HURRICANE-FORCE WINDS By Lydia Allen
OCTOBER 6, 2026- — Florida State University faculty are helping build stronger structures by examining how wave-shaped patterns on exterior walls and roofs reduce wind loads on low-rise buildings by up to 60%.
The research, published in Engineering Structures, could help architects and engineers combat hurricane-force winds through innovative building shapes.
“Changing a building’s shape can significantly reduce the intensity of wind forces it has to withstand”, said Pedro Fernández-Cabán, one of the co-authors of the work and an assistant professor of civil engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. “These nonconventional building shapes reduce the damage from worst-case severe weather scenarios. It’s another tool for engineers and designers to protect against wind damage.”

Secretary Kennedy Announces 8 Communities to Receive $96 Million Through New STREETS Program
October 2, 2026 — U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. today announced in Houston, Texas the eight communities selected to receive funding through the new Safety Through Recovery, Engagement, and Evidence-based Treatment and Support (STREETS) program. Administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), STREETS will provide $96 million over four years to help communities build coordinated systems of care for people who are homeless and have serious mental illness, substance use disorders, or co-occurring disorders.
“STREETS takes treatment directly to Americans living on our streets and connects them to the care and support they need to recover,” said Secretary Kennedy. “Under President Trump, we will no longer accept a system that manages human suffering instead of ending it. We are helping people reclaim their health, rebuild their lives, and achieve the dignity, purpose, and independence that come with recovery.”
Each of the eight selected communities will receive $3 million a year for four years. The selected communities are:
Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Board for Montgomery County (OH) Cherokee Nation (OK) City of Detroit, Health Department (MI) City of Houston, Health Department, Human Services Division (TX) City Of Huntington (WV)

New Regulations Make It Easier to Find, Compare, and Report Healthcare Pricing and Coverage Information
OCTOBER 5, 2026 – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), today announced that Americans will have access to more reliable, accessible, and actionable information about what their health coverage includes and what they are likely to pay before receiving care under new regulations that strengthen federal healthcare price transparency requirements. The actions taken today to create a more transparent healthcare marketplace also ensure employers can make more informed decisions; researchers can better understand healthcare markets; and innovators can build better tools.
“Americans should know what their healthcare will cost before they receive it,” said HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “President Trump directed us to bring real price transparency to healthcare, and HHS is delivering. These rules give patients clearer, more reliable information to compare costs, understand their coverage, and make informed decisions before they receive care.” READ MORE |

An Evening of Hope Celebrating 25 Years of Compassion and Saving Lives
For 25 years, A Safe Haven for Newborns has stood as a beacon of hope for mothers in crisis and a lifeline for vulnerable newborns. What began as Nick’s deeply personal journey to heal a broken heart and honor the memory of his beloved wife, Gloria, following her tragic passing, has grown into an internationally recognized organization dedicated to preventing infant abandonment and providing support, counseling, and critical resources to women facing the overwhelming reality of an unplanned pregnancy. From its beginnings, the mission has been rooted in compassion, dignity, and love — offering hope, protection, and a path forward during life’s most difficult moments.
Over the past quarter century, countless lives have been touched through the organization’s unwavering commitment to offering safe, legal, and anonymous options for mothers seeking help. Through advocacy, education, community partnerships, and around-the-clock support, A Safe Haven for Newborns has continued to remind women that they are never alone. To date, 441 newborns have been given a chance at life — 431 in Florida; nine in other states, and one in Honduras.
This milestone anniversary is more than a celebration of years — it is a celebration of lives, second chances, and the power of compassion to change the future. We invite you to join us in celebrating our Silver Jubilee by visiting our website and selecting a sponsorship opportunity. Or, contact Nick Silverio at safehaven@asafehavenfornewborns.com; 305-882-1304 x103 for more information.
