Baptist Health Foundation Receives $1 Million Gift from Jim and Jane Slattery to Benefit Baptist Health Homestead Hospital
May 6, 2026 – Baptist Health Foundation announced today that it has received a $1 million gift from the Jim & Jane Slattery Fund at Ocean Reef Community Foundation to benefit the Baptist Health Homestead Hospital Clinical Expansion Fund. The gift will help support the construction of a new four-story, 134,000-square-foot tower at Baptist Health Homestead Hospital in Homestead, Florida. The expansion will increase inpatient capacity, extend surgical and diagnostic services, and enhance the overall patient experience. In recognition of the Slatterys’ generosity, the family will be honored with a naming ceremony at the hospital at a later date.
“This gift from Jim and Jane Slattery reflects their extraordinary generosity and deep commitment to the communities we serve,” said Alex Villoch, CEO of Baptist Health Foundation. “As longtime supporters of the Medical Center at Ocean Reef, they understand the critical importance of access to excellent patient care. Their investment will help expand access to vital services for residents of South Miami-Dade and the Florida Keys, and we are deeply grateful for their partnership.”
Homestead and South Miami-Dade County are experiencing unprecedented growth, with an estimated 50,000 new residents expected in the coming years.

Continuous Flow of Trucks Lined Up for the First Concrete Pour for the New YMCA Family Center and Broward Health Freestanding Emergency Room at Holiday Park
May 6, 2026 – Members of the YMCA of South Florida, Broward Health and contractors Gulf Building and ANF celebrated the first concrete pour of the more than 700 cubic yards of concrete on the perimeter foundation and column footings for the new YMCA Family Center and Broward Health Fort Lauderdale ER at Holiday Park in Fort Lauderdale.
“This is our Central Park, right here in Fort Lauderdale,” said YMCA President and CEO Sheryl A. Woods. “We’re bringing resources, programs and services that this area of the community did not have before, so I can assure that it’s going to become a very popular destination.”
As part of the construction milestone Gulf Building Senior Vice President Rob Gillette also presented Woods a symbolic keepsake – a rebar, or reinforcing bar, used in construction to reinforce concrete.
The new YMCA Family Center will be the second Y in Fort Lauderdale, featuring a 49,500-square-foot health and wellness facility that will include an aquatics center with two pools, indoor basketball court, fitness center, youth sports, summer camps, after-school programs, and community rooms, serving over 15,000 local residents annually.

BROWARD HEALTH CORAL SPRINGS ENHANCES EMERGENCY CARE WITH NEW EMS BREAKROOM AND ADVANCED CT SCANNER
May 7, 2026 – Broward Health Coral Springs marked a major investment in emergency care with a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating a new state-of-the-art CT (computed tomography) scanner in the emergency room and a newly renovated EMS breakroom.
The event brought together hospital leadership and physicians, members of the North Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners, elected officials, city and community leaders and representatives from fire rescue and EMS.
“We are so proud of the investment we are making at Broward Health Coral Springs,” said Kristen Bowman, CEO of Broward Health Coral Springs. “The dual source scanner is especially important for our cardiac CTA patients since the dose is significantly less due to the updated software, and with its location in the ER, it will markedly improve our turn-around time. It’s just one of the many investments we continue to make to better serve our patients with the highest level of care.”
The new Siemens Pro. Pulse dual-source CT scanner delivers higher resolution images, faster scan times and reduced radiation exposure, enhancing the hospital’s ability to diagnose and treat patients quickly, especially in critical situations.

Tampa General Hospital Celebrates 15,000 Transplants Completed in Just Under Five Decades
Significant milestone achieved by just a few centers in the nation reflects expertise and proficiency in life-saving surgeries
May 7, 2026 – More than 15,000 lives have been transformed by the surgeons at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) through organ transplantation, a milestone achieved by only a handful of centers in the nation. The TGH transplant program was launched in 1974 and has since become a premier destination for this life-saving surgery.
In 2024, the region’s only academic health system was the #1 in the United States for transplants by volume, having completed 889 transplants during the calendar year. In 2025, the TGH Transplant Institute surpassed its own record with 895 transplants performed and was ranked among the top five in the nation for the third consecutive year.

This year the Foundation surpassed last year’s $1 million benchmark as the community rallied to support the new emergency room at Jackson Memorial Hospital, now the largest in the nation.
Running through April 30, the community-focused fundraising initiative called on individuals in Miami-Dade County to “be the one” to make a difference, reinforcing the critical role Jackson Health System plays in the lives of South Florida residents.
Funds raised during the campaign will directly support the new emergency room at Jackson Memorial Hospital, helping expand access to world-class and cutting-edge care as demand for emergency services continues to grow across the county. Delray Medical Center Launches Transcatheter Tricuspid Valve Replacement Program with EVOQUE System
May 7, 2026 – Delray Medical Center has successfully launched its transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement (TTVR) program using the EVOQUE Tricuspid Valve Replacement System, offering a transformative treatment option for patients with severe tricuspid regurgitation.
Tricuspid regurgitation, a historically underdiagnosed and undertreated condition, can lead to significant symptoms including fatigue, swelling, and heart failure. Many patients are not candidates for open-heart surgery, creating a critical need for less invasive treatment options.
The EVOQUE system is a minimally invasive, transfemoral therapy designed to replace the native tricuspid valve and restore forward blood flow, improving symptoms and quality of life.
“Tricuspid valve disease has long been an area of unmet need,” said Dr. Tilak Pasala, Medical Director of Structural Heart at Delray Medical Center. “With the introduction of EVOQUE, we are now able to offer a meaningful, minimally invasive solution to patients who previously had very limited options.”

Sarasota Memorial Continues “Straight A” Safety Streak in Sarasota & Venice
May 6, 2026 – Both Sarasota Memorial Hospital campuses earned “Straight A” grades from The Leapfrog Group today, reflecting a track record of preventing medical errors, accidents and infections. The honors, which reflect top performance reviews of both Sarasota Memorial hospitals, were announced today in Leapfrog’s Spring 2026 Hospital Safety Report Cards.
Issued in the spring and fall of each year to approximately 3,000 general hospitals across the nation, Leapfrog’s safety grades are based on annual hospital survey data and patient safety measures obtained from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
SMH’s two hospitals are among just 15% nationwide to earn Leapfrog’s elite “Straight A” designation. The Sarasota campus has received straight A’s since it began participating in the Leapfrog survey in 2016, and SMH-Venice has maintained it since it opened in 2021.

Known for its quality, safety, and patient experience scores, Jupiter Medical Center is again the only hospital in Palm Beach and Martin Counties to earn the “A” rating.
This distinction places JMC among the nation’s “Straight A” hospitals, those that received an “A” rating for Spring 2026 and have maintained that grade for at least five consecutive reporting cycles. This elite designation is awarded to only a small percentage of eligible hospitals nationwide and reflects Jupiter Medical Center’s longstanding commitment to patient safety through rigorous safety protocols, ongoing quality improvement, and a culture of teamwork and collaboration.

Former Sarasota Memorial NICU Nurse Celebrating First Mother’s Day Back at SMH
May 8, 2026 – As Mother’s Day approaches, Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is celebrating the inspiring journey of former NICU nurse and new mother Tamika Isidore, a woman whose connection to the health system has come full circle through healing, motherhood and hope.
A Tampa resident, Isidore first came to Sarasota Memorial as a nursing student. Inspired by the compassion and teamwork she experienced at SMH, she pursued a career in neonatal intensive care nursing and later joined the Sarasota hospital’s NICU team, until the commute and family obligations prompted her to seek a nursing job closer to home.
Although she no longer works at SMH, Isidore said it was the only place she wanted to deliver her first child.
“The people at Sarasota Memorial always felt special to me,” she said. “Just in case I had to come to the NICU, I know that they work hard, and I know it’s such a great environment.”
Her concern became reality when a routine exam with SMH’s First Physicians Group OB/GYN Kelly Hamel, MD, revealed that her baby’s heart rate kept dropping. Isidore underwent an emergency cesarean section, delivering daughter Tamia Blakey at 31 weeks and 5 days gestation. Tamia weighed 4 pounds at birth and was admitted to the NICU.

Lee Health Hospitals Continue “Straight A” Streak in The Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2026 Hospital Safety Grade Reporting Period
May 6, 2026 — The Leapfrog Group has released its Spring 2026 Hospital Safety Grades, awarding “A” grades to Cape Coral Hospital, HealthPark Medical Center and Lee Memorial Hospital. Gulf Coast Medical Center received a strong “B” in the latest ratings.
This marks the 17th consecutive reporting period in which every Lee Health hospital has earned a Leapfrog grade of “B” or higher. These safety grades are refelective of the sustained efforts across the system since release of Fall Hospital Safety Grades in November.
Cape Coral Hospital, HealthPark Medical Center and Lee Memorial Hospital also received Leapfrog’s prestigious “Straight A” designation, which recognizes hospitals that have earned an “A” safety grade for at least five consecutive years, an accomplishment that only an elite group of 15% of Leapfrog hospitals earn nation wide. HealthPark Medical Center earned its 15th consecutive “A” grade, while Lee Memorial Hospital and Cape Coral Hospital each extended their streaks to eight straight “A” ratings.

Crisis Prevention & Empowerment named Sapphire Awards honoree by Florida Blue
May 5, 2026 – Crisis Prevention & Empowerment (CPE), a nonprofit dedicated to providing free and affordable mental health support throughout Southwest Florida, has received a $25,000 grant through the Florida Blue Foundation’s Sapphire Awards program.
The grant will support CPE’s crisis intervention, behavioral health and wrap-around supportive services. CPE provides accessible, low- or no-cost mental health services to thousands of individuals across Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades counties. The organization provides a safe and reliable place for those in need of mental health support, including children, teens, adults, seniors, veterans, and families.

May 6, 2026 – The Bonita Bay community has once again demonstrated its commitment to improving the lives of local cancer patients by raising $474,508 for Lee Health Cancer Institute through recent events at Bonita Bay Club.
Proceeds from the 2026 Highlander Golf Classic, the Bonita Bay Gala, “A Night with The Great Gatsby,” and the FineMark Women’s Pro Tennis Championship support the Cancer Support Community at Lee Health Cancer Institute, providing vital resources for patients, survivors and their families throughout Southwest Florida.
The Highlander Golf Classic featured a shamble‑style tournament on the Creekside Course, followed by cocktails, dinner and an awards presentation recognizing achievements such as Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive. The annual gala brought together Bonita Bay residents and supporters for an evening of dinner, entertainment, and both silent and live auctions, generating significant support for cancer care close to home. During the gala, attendees heard remarks from Lee Health Cancer Institute leadership, followed by a fellow Bonita Bay resident who shared their personal experience benefiting from the Cancer Support Community program.

Miami Cancer Institute Highlights Broad Oncology Research Portfolio at 2026 ASCO Annual Meeting
May 5, 2026 – Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, will showcase a diverse range of research at the 2026 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), taking place May 29 – June 2 at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois. This year’s presentations span multiple tumor types and research areas, including a rapid oral presentation on authorship trends in phase III oncology trials, as well as research in glioblastoma and brain metastases, lung and gastrointestinal cancers, and prostate malignancies, alongside studies focused on clinical trial access, screening, and outcomes disparities.
“Our research presented at this year’s ASCO Annual Meeting reflects both the depth and diversity of work underway at Miami Cancer Institute,” said Manmeet Singh Ahluwalia, M.D., MBA, FASCO, chief of medical oncology, chief scientific officer, and deputy director of Miami Cancer Institute, and Fernandez Family Foundation Endowed Chair in Cancer Research. “From clinical trials in glioblastoma and brain metastases to advances in lung cancer detection, gastrointestinal malignancies, and prostate cancer outcomes, these studies also address critical questions around clinical trial access and screening gaps..
