Baptist Health Foundation Receives $1 Million Gift from Earl and Christy Powell to Support Cancer and Neuroscience Research
August 17, 2026 – Baptist Health Foundation announced today that it has received a $1 million gift from Earl and Christy Powell to support the Stem Cell Therapy Fund at Baptist Health Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute and the Center for Spine Care at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute.
The gift, made in honor of Guenther Koehne, M.D., Ph.D., deputy director and chief of blood and marrow transplant and hematologic oncology with Baptist Health Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute, and Raul Vasquez-Castellanos, M.D., director of complex spine surgery at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute, will be equally allocated to advance the physicians’ research initiatives. In tribute to their generosity, the Powells will receive naming recognition to be unveiled at a later date.

NORTH BROWARD HOSPITAL DISTRICT BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS ANNOUNCES 2026 BOARD LEADERSHIP
Paul Tanner (Chair), Jonathan Hage (Vice Chair) and Nancy Stamper (Secretary/Treasurer) were unanimously elected to their officer positions at the July 29 North Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners board meeting.
August 18, 2026 – The North Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners, the governing body of Broward Health, unanimously elected its new officer positions at the July 29 board meeting. Paul Tanner was re-elected chair, Jonathan Hage was elected vice chair and Nancy Stamper was elected secretary/treasurer.
Additional commissioners serving on board include past chair Christopher Pernicano, past vice chair Stacy Angier, Ray Berry and Jennifer Nicole.

Baptist Health names new chief human resources officer
Denver Mitchell will lead talent strategies that build, support and retain the workforce behind exceptional patient care.
August 17, 2026 – Following a national search, Baptist Health has named Denver Mitchell as executive vice president and chief human resources officer (CHRO), effective September 1, 2026.
As CHRO, Mitchell will serve as a strategic advisor to the executive leadership team, leading initiatives that strengthen Baptist Health’s workforce through talent planning, organizational design, succession planning and leadership development. Baptist Health Baptist Hospital Completes Phase 1 of Lake Pavilion Renovation to Elevate Women’s and Infant Care
August 18, 2026 – Baptist Health celebrated the completion of the first phase of a $120 million transformation of Baptist Health Baptist Hospital’s Lake Pavilion, a multi-phase renovation project designed to enhance the experience of care for women, infants and families throughout South Florida.
Phase 1 includes newly renovated clinical spaces across three floors of the east side of Lake Pavilion, including the Obstetric Emergency Department and Antepartum Unit, Labor & Delivery, and the Mother Baby Unit. The redesigned areas prioritize comfort, privacy, safety and family involvement while supporting an exceptional patient experience.
Among the enhanced services, the renovated Antepartum Unit supports patients with high-risk pregnancies who require additional monitoring or extended hospital stays, with nursing teams and emergency physicians nearby when needed. UM HEALTH : Can Advanced Mapping Improve AFib Ablation? The EMPIRE-AF Study
University of Miami Miller School of Medicine researchers are testing whether an advanced heart-mapping technology can identify the electrical signals driving persistent atrial fibrillation and improve catheter ablation outcomes.
For patients living with persistent atrial fibrillation (AFib), catheter ablation can be life changing. Yet, despite decades of advances in technology and technique, many patients continue to experience recurrent arrhythmias after treatment. Researchers at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine are investigating whether a new precision-mapping approach can improve those outcomes by identifying the unique electrical signals driving AFib in individual patients.
The effort is underway through EMPIRE-AF, a clinical trial evaluating an investigational technology known as electrogram morphology recurrence (EMR) mapping. The study will determine whether using EMR mapping to guide ablation decisions can improve the likelihood of maintaining a normal heart rhythm compared to current standard-of-care treatment.
Why Existing AFib Ablation Often Falls Short
AFib is the most common sustained heart rhythm disorder, causing rapid and disorganized electrical activity in the heart’s upper chambers. For patients with persistent atrial fibrillation, the condition can significantly affect quality of life while increasing the risk of stroke, heart failure and other serious cardiovascular complications.

Aetna Cuts Medicare Advantage Commissions for 2027 Sales: What Brokers and Beneficiaries Need to Know
August 17, 2026 – Aetna is entering the 2027 Medicare Advantage selling season amid a broader industry shift that is putting pressure on the traditional relationship between Medicare Advantage insurers and the independent agents and brokers who help seniors select coverage.
While headlines may suggest that Aetna is simply “cutting Medicare Advantage commissions,” the reality is more nuanced. Aetna has already designated certain Medicare Advantage products as non-commissionable for new sales in selected markets, and the company’s approach to 2027 comes as insurers across the industry reassess which plans they want to grow. The result is a changing compensation environment that could have significant consequences for brokers, insurance agencies and, potentially, Medicare beneficiaries.
A Changing Medicare Advantage Business Model
Medicare Advantage has become an increasingly competitive business. More than half of Medicare beneficiaries are now enrolled in Medicare Advantage, and insurers have spent years competing aggressively for new members.
That growth strategy has become more difficult as medical costs, utilization and other expenses rise. For 2027, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) finalized an average 2.48% increase in Medicare Advantage payments to plans, equivalent to more than $13 billion in additional payments. When estimated risk-score trends are included, CMS projects a 4.98% increase.

AMA: On prior auth, CMS responds to AMA concerns
AUGUST 17, 2026 – CHICAGO — The American Medical Association (AMA) today welcomed updated guidance from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that strengthens enforcement of federal prior authorization transparency requirements, addressing concerns the AMA raised about how health plans were making required information available to patients and physicians.
The AMA alerted CMS to widespread problems with health plans’ public disclosures of prior authorization requirements and outcomes. Rather than making information readily accessible, many plans posted disclosures that were difficult to find, hard to comprehend or incomplete. CMS’ updated guidance addresses several of these concerns and provides greater clarity for patients seeking information about health plans’ prior authorization policies.
“Patients should not need a portal password, a billing manual or medical training to find and understand a health plan’s prior authorization practices,” said AMA President Willie Underwood III, MD, MSc, MPH.

HHS Announces New Peer Support Prevention Services to Strengthen Families, Advancing the Great American Recovery & A Home for Every Child Initiatives
AUGUST 18, 2026 — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) through the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) today added new peer support programs to the Title-IV Prevention Services Clearinghouse, for which all states can now claim federal reimbursement. The expansion advances the Trump Administration’s Great American Recovery and A Home for Every Child initiatives by equipping states with evidence-based resources to help parents overcome addiction, thereby strengthening families and reducing the number of children entering foster care.
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., White House Senior Advisor for Addiction Recovery and Co-Chair of the Great American Recovery Initiative Kathryn Burgum, and ACF Assistant Secretary Alex J. Adams joined Governor Kim Reynolds in Des Moines to make the announcement.
“Addiction tears families apart. Recovery brings parents home and keeps children with the families who love them,” said HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “Under President Trump’s Great American Recovery, we are expanding proven peer support that helps parents overcome addiction, strengthens families, and keeps children out of foster care.”

What began as Nick’s deeply personal journey to heal a broken heart and honor the memory of his beloved wife, Gloria, following her tragic passing, has grown into an internationally recognized organization dedicated to preventing infant abandonment and providing support, counseling, and critical resources to women facing the overwhelming reality of an unplanned pregnancy. From its beginnings, the mission has been rooted in compassion, dignity, and love — offering hope, protection, and a path forward during life’s most difficult moments.
Over the past quarter century, countless lives have been touched through the organization’s unwavering commitment to offering safe, legal, and anonymous options for mothers seeking help. Through advocacy, education, community partnerships, and around-the-clock support, A Safe Haven for Newborns has continued to remind women that they are never alone. August 3, 2026 – Promise Fund, a South Florida-based nonprofit dedicated to increasing survivorship from breast and cervical cancer, will host free Mammography Screening Days on the following dates:
August 28, 2026 at Consulado de Guatemala, 1926 10th Ave N #104, Lake Worth Beach, FL, 33461 from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
This screening event is presented in partnership with Florida Mobile Mammography and Florida Health.
