Broward Health North Successfully Performs First PFO Closure Procedure Using GORE® CARDIOFORM Septal Occluder
This Milestone Marks an Expansion of Advanced Structural Heart Therapies Available to Residents in Broward County
AUGUST 3, 2026 – Broward Health North has successfully completed its first Patent Foramen Ovale closure procedure utilizing the GORE® CARDIOFORM Septal Occluder, marking a significant advancement in the hospital’s cardiovascular care capabilities. The minimally invasive procedure was led by Pablo Rengifo-Moreno, M.D., director of the structural heart disease program at Broward Health.
A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a small opening between the upper chambers of the heart that normally closes after birth. The condition affects one in four adults, and while most people experience no symptoms, the opening can allow blood clots to travel to the brain and cause a stroke.
The PFO closure procedure is a minimally invasive option that guides a thin catheter through a vein in the leg to the heart where a small device can seal the opening without requiring open-heart surgery. In carefully selected patients, the procedure is highly effective at reducing recurrent stroke risk, with most patients returning to normal activities within a week. “For patients who have experienced a stroke with no clear cause, PFO closure offers a proven solution to prevent future events,” said Dr. Rengifo. “Now that we can offer this procedure at Broward Health North, our patients no longer need to travel elsewhere to access this life-changing intervention.”
The successful procedure was made possible through the collaborative efforts of a dedicated multidisciplinary team at Broward Health North. | Baptist Health Foundation Receives $1 Million Gift from Julio and Alexandra Herrera to Benefit Care for Women at Baptist Health Baptist Hospital and Baptist Health South Miami Hospital
August 3, 2026 – Baptist Health Foundation announced today a $1 million gift from Julio C. and Alexandra Herrera to support care for women and infants at Baptist Hospital and South Miami Hospital. The gift will be divided evenly, with $500,000 supporting the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at South Miami Hospital and $500,000 supporting the transformation of the Lake Pavilion at Baptist Hospital.

Tampa General Hospital Prepares to Deploy First-in-the-Nation Whole Blood Drone Delivery Program in Partnership With Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and Archer First Response Systems
Drone delivery will cut average blood transport times to under three minutes across a 70-square-mile coverage area in Hillsborough County.
August 3, 2026 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) today announced the launch of the nation’s first EMS-driven drone delivery program for pre-hospital whole blood delivery. The initiative will decrease the amount of time needed to deliver lifesaving blood directly to the scene of traumatic injuries, offering patients a better chance at survival.
The program, developed in partnership with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, University of South Florida (USF) Health Morsani College of Medicine, Florida Center for Emergency Medical Services (EMS), OneBlood and Archer First Response System’s emergency drone logistics infrastructure positions Tampa Bay at the forefront of innovation in trauma and emergency medicine. When patients are hemorrhaging, every minute without blood drastically decreases chances of survival.

August 3, 2026– Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center is the first hospital in northern Palm Beach County to perform a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair using the GORE® EXCLUDER® Thoracoabdominal Branch Endoprosthesis (TAMBE). The groundbreaking procedure was performed by vascular surgeons Dr. Lauren Huntress and Dr. Joseph Savarese, on staff at the hospital and part of Prime Vascular Institute, bringing a new treatment option to patients with some of the most complex forms of aortic aneurysm disease.
The TAMBE device is the first FDA-approved, off-the-shelf endovascular repair solution specifically designed to treat complex aneurysms involving the visceral aorta. University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Researchers Uncover Key Driver of Nonhealing Venous Leg Ulcers
A Miller School-led study published in Science Translational Medicine identifies PTEN as a master regulator of nonhealing venous leg ulcers, revealing a potential therapeutic strategy to restart stalled wound repair.
For millions of patients living with chronic venous leg ulcers (VLUs), healing remains a major challenge. Despite standard treatments that include compression therapy and wound care, fewer than half of VLUs heal successfully. These chronic wounds can persist for years, causing pain, loss of mobility, social isolation and substantial health care costs.
A study led by researchers at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has uncovered a key molecular driver of these nonhealing wounds and identified a potential therapeutic strategy that could help restart the healing process.
What the Study Found:
PTEN activity is elevated in chronic venous leg ulcers.
Elevated PTEN suppresses immune, vascular and lymphatic repair processes.
Blocking PTEN restored healing pathways in preclinical models.

First-in-class small molecule inhibitor designed with AI support shows promise against pancreatic cancer in preclinical studies
JACKSONVILLE, Fla – AUGUST 5, 2026 — Mayo Clinic researchers have developed an experimental drug with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) to target the “undruggable” PDZ-domain of GIPC1 protein that helps different types of cancer, including pancreatic cancer, to grow and resist treatment. In laboratory studies, the drug slowed tumor growth, improved survival and enhanced the effects of the chemotherapy drug gemcitabine.
The findings, published in Cell Reports, also demonstrate how AI could help develop a small molecule inhibitor of a target protein that can be less toxic and speed the discovery of new cancer treatments.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most difficult cancers to treat because it is often diagnosed after it has spread and is resistant to many current therapies. While survival rates remain low, advances in research are creating new opportunities to develop more effective treatments. This study represents one of those promising advances, offering a potential new strategy for targeting pancreatic cancer.

Researchers discover immune ‘off switch’ used by cancer cells
AUGUST 3, 2026 — Mayo Clinic researchers have identified a protein that cancer cells use to shut down the body’s immune response, a discovery that could help scientists develop new treatments that make cancer immunotherapies more effective.
Published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, the study identifies a previously unknown role for a protein called TRAILshort, which acts like an immune “off switch.” The researchers found that TRAILshort prevents T cells — the immune system’s primary cancer-fighting cells — from recognizing and destroying cancer and virus-infected cells. In preclinical models, blocking the protein restored T-cell activity and improved immune response.

HHS Announces HRSA Health Centers Deliver Record-Breaking Care to More Than 32.7 Million Patients
AUGUST 3, 2026 – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today marked National Health Center Week by announcing that Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)-funded health centers served more than 32.7 million patients in 2025 — an increase of more than 350,000 patients from 2024 and the highest number of patients served in the Health Center Program’s 61-year history.
“America’s health centers are proving that prevention works,” said HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “They’re helping deliver President Trump’s vision to Make America Healthy Again by preventing chronic disease before it starts, expanding access to high-quality primary care, and putting patients — not bureaucracy — at the center of our health system. This record shows that when we invest in prevention and address the root causes of disease, we build a healthier, stronger America.”
HRSA-funded health centers provide comprehensive primary care at more than 16,000 service sites nationwide, serving 1 in 8 children, 1 in 5 rural residents, and 1 in 15 adults age 65 and older. Under the Trump Administration, the greatest areas of patient growth in 2025 occurred in rural communities, with health centers serving an additional 308,000 rural patients, underscoring health centers’ critical role in improving access to care where it is needed most.

What began as Nick’s deeply personal journey to heal a broken heart and honor the memory of his beloved wife, Gloria, following her tragic passing, has grown into an internationally recognized organization dedicated to preventing infant abandonment and providing support, counseling, and critical resources to women facing the overwhelming reality of an unplanned pregnancy. Promise Fund to Host Free ‘Mammography Screening Days’ in Palm Beach County in August
August 3, 2026 – Promise Fund, a South Florida-based nonprofit dedicated to increasing survivorship from breast and cervical cancer, will host free Mammography Screening Days on the following dates:
August 8 at Iglesia de Dios Puerta del Cielo,709 North F Street, Lake Worth Beach, from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
This screening event is presented in partnership with Faith Community Closet, Baptist Health and Florida Health.
August 15 at Growing Strong Ministries,1512 Northeast 4th Street, Boynton Beach, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
This screening event is presented in partnership with Florida Mobile Mammography, Florida Health and Growing Strong Ministries.

Lee Health: Free Autism Screening for Young Children
August 3, 2026 — Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida offers free monthly autism spectrum disorder screenings for toddlers 18 months to five years of age.
The next screenings will be held on Aug. 12 and Aug. 14 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Pediatric Specialist Office, 15901 Bass Road, Suite 102, Fort Myers.
It is estimated that one in every 31 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined.
