44 HOUSE LAWMAKERS PUSH FOR EXTENSION OF VALUE-BASED CARE INCENTIVES Participation in Alternative Payment Models Set to Slow If Incentives Expire
November 2, 2022 — The National Association of ACOs (NAACOS) today praised the more than 40 House lawmakers who support extending a 5 percent incentive payment in Medicare for physicians and other clinicians who practice in value-based payment models. The members of Congress made their request in a bipartisan letter sent today to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
Unless Congress extends the incentive by December 31, millions of patients will lose access to value-based care. Today, roughly 300,000 clinicians receive this 5 percent incentive on their Medicare payments, with risk-bearing accountable care organizations being the dominant mechanism to secure the payment. Expiration of these incentives will discourage future participation in models that have seen growing uptake in recent years. More than 800 ACOs, health systems, and physician group practices asked Congress to save the incentive in a letter sent in late September.

RADIOTHERAPY FIGHTS EXCRUCIATING BACK PAIN FROM PANCREATIC CANCER, IN ISRAELI STUDY Patients often report intense upper body pain, thought to be from tumor pressing on nerves; MDs at Israeli hospital find radiotherapy has major benefit, following 4-year research
November 2, 2022 – Radiotherapy can help reduce the often-excruciating upper body pain experienced by people with pancreatic cancer, Israeli doctors say in new research.
Pain in the abdomen or the middle portion of the back is a common symptom of pancreatic cancer, thought to be caused by the tumor pressing onto and infiltrating a complex network of nerves located in the abdomen called the celiac plexus.
Doctors at Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv had the idea of administering radiotherapy to the celiac plexus as a pain management intervention. They have finished a four-year study that found that it reduced pain for half of participants.

October 25, 2022 – LA JOLLA, CA—A monoclonal antibody that targets heroin is effective in blocking the psychoactive and lethal effects of this drug of abuse in mice—offering a new strategy for heroin addiction and overdose treatment, according to a new study from Scripps Research.
In the study, published on October 6, 2022 in ACS Central Science, the researchers isolated several distinct variants (or “clones”) of antibodies that bind tightly to heroin and its major metabolites. They found that one of these monoclonal antibodies was remarkably effective at blocking heroin’s painkilling effect, as well as its effect in slowing breathing and heart rate—the cause of overdose deaths.
