THE EUGENE M. & CHRISTINE E. LYNN CANCER INSTITUTE TREATS PROSTATE CANCER PATIENTS WITH NON-INVASIVE HIGH-INTENSITY FOCUSED ULTRASOUND ABLATIVE THERAPY
Minimally invasive procedure helps cancer patients maintain urinary and sexual function
March 21, 2024 – High intensity focused ultrasound, also known as HIFU, is being utilized by urologic oncologist(s) at The Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, at Boca Raton Regional Hospital to treat patients with prostate cancer.
HIFU, which is also used for patients with essential tremors, has proven successful results for prostate cancer patients in Europe over the past twenty years. It was first FDA approved for use in the United States in 2015. David A. Taub, M.D., director of urologic oncology and robotic urology has brought the newest iteration of this technology to the Boca Raton community to offer a less invasive approach to prostate cancer care when compared to traditional whole-gland treatments such as surgery or radiation.
Patients who meet specific criteria are able to undergo a one or two-hour outpatient procedure where HIFU will ablate only the cancerous area, importantly sparing normal prostate tissue. The ability to focus treatment precisely on only part of the prostate minimizes urinary and sexual side effects after the procedure. Following the procedure, patients are discharged with a catheter and return to the clinic days later for a follow-up. Within three months, the urologic oncologist along with the multidisciplinary team evaluates the patient’s prostate-specific antigen (PSA) to assess treatment progress.

NCH CARDIOLOGIST PERFORMS FIRST TRANSCATHETER TRICUSPID VALVE REPLACEMENT IN FLORIDA
March 21, 2024 – NCH Rooney Heart Institute announces a groundbreaking procedure for patients with valvular heart disease. The operation performed by a highly specialized team led by Robert J. Cubeddu, MD, Harvard-trained interventional cardiologist and President of the NCH Rooney Heart Institute, stated that this represents the first-ever transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement performed in the State of Florida and one of the first few in the country, after its recent approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Tricuspid valve disease is highly prevalent and affects thousands of Americans with heart disease. The condition typically manifests as a malfunctioning leaky valve that when severe, often results in congestive heart failure and is associated with poor prognosis. Until recently, treatment options for tricuspid valve disease have been limited to drugs aimed at providing symptom relief only. The introduction of a minimally invasive transcatheter approach to replace the tricuspid valve represents a major breakthrough for the thousands of patients affected by this adverse condition.
The new tricuspid valve is known as the “Evoque” valve and is manufactured by Edwards Lifescience, Inc. The self-expanding valve prosthesis is engineered from bovine pericardial tissue and is effectively delivered through a catheter inserted in the groin and maneuvered antegrade into the heart across the venous circulation. Once in position, the valve is carefully deployed replacing the function of the damaged tricuspid valve. The procedure takes approximately two hours and most patients recover quickly and are discharged home within two to three days.

NICKLAUS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL LAUNCHES COLLABORATION WITH HOPE FOR HENRY FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT PEDIATRIC PATIENTS THANKS TO LIDS FOUNDATION
The program “Super Rewards for Super Kids” helps pediatric patients with serious illness to cope with difficult medical procedures
March 22, 2024 — Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and the Hope for Henry Foundation launched a new collaboration on Wednesday to benefit hospitalized children receiving care at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.
This event marked the start of Hope for Henry’s “Super Rewards for Super Kids” program for Nicklaus Children’s patients. This innovative program incentivizes children to adhere to critical medical procedures that can be frightening or uncomfortable, like MRIs, CT scans, vaccinations, and more. Applying principles of behavioral economics to children’s care, it reduces anxiety surrounding necessary diagnostic processes and treatments, limits the need for sedation, and allows for more efficient treatment to help patients and families heal and thrive.
This collaboration between Nicklaus Children’s and Hope for Henry is funded for $100,000 over one year by the Lids Foundation, the official charitable organization of the Lids Sports Group.
Hope for Henry’s Director of National Programs Kelly Beck met with Nicklaus Children’s Hospital clinical leadership; and Carolyn Fung (COO) and Erin Behen (Program Manager) provided training and materials for pediatric staff and Child Life Program specialists to implement the Super Rewards program, and distribute gifts donated by the Lids Foundation and Hope for Henry for pediatric patients.

DCF LAUNCHES FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND BAKER ACT DATA DASHBOARD
Modernization efforts will improve the mental health system of care in Florida~
MARCH 21, 2024 – Today, the Department of Children and Families (Department) Secretary Shevaun Harris announced a first-of-its-kind Baker Act data dashboard as a result of a systemwide reporting modernization initiative. The Baker Act is a Florida law that focuses on crisis services for individuals with mental illness, much like an emergency department is for individuals experiencing a medical emergency. This publicly available dashboard will increase access and transparency among Baker Act-receiving facilities, identify regional and geographic trends including areas with high utilization, repeat admissions, settings where and reasons why initiations occur, and allow for timely updates on Baker Act initiation and demographic breakdowns, including by age. Therefore, researchers and policy makers will be able to have greater insights into the data.
This tool will allow Florida to better serve mental health needs in the state with current information and trends. The dashboard is updated weekly, replacing a lagging annual report process where data is usually years behind.

INFLAMMATION-REDUCING DRUG SHOWS NO BENEFIT FOR DRY AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION IN NIH TRIAL
MARCH 20, 2024 – The drug minocycline, an antibiotic that also decreases inflammation, failed to slow vision loss or expansion of geographic atrophy in people with dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), according to a phase II clinical study at the National Eye Institute (NEI), part of the National Institutes of Health.
Dry AMD affects the macula, the part of the eye’s retina that allows for clear central vision. In people with dry AMD, patches of light-sensing photoreceptors and their nearby support cells begin to die off, leaving regions known as geographic atrophy. Over time, these regions expand, causing people to lose more and more of their central vision. Microglia, immune cells that help maintain tissue and clear up debris, are present at higher levels around damaged retinal regions in people with dry AMD than in people without AMD. Scientists have suggested that inflammation – and particularly microglia – may be driving the expansion of geographic atrophy regions.

SOCIAL ISOLATION LINKED TO BIOLOGICAL AGE GAP, HIGHER MORTALITY RATE
Mayo Clinic research finds a connection between Social Network Index score and AI-determined biological age
March 20, 2024 — A new study from Mayo Clinic finds that socially isolated people are more likely to show signs of being biologically older than their age and more likely to die from a variety of causes. The research, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Advances, suggests that social connection plays an important role in overall physical health and longevity, and it should be addressed as a necessary part of the social determinants of health.
To investigate the role of social contact in biological aging, the researchers compared the Social Network Index and AI-enabled electrocardiogram (AI-ECG)-predicted age gaps of over 280,000 adults who received outpatient care between June 2019 and March 2022. Eligible participants completed a questionnaire on the social determinants of health and had AI-ECG records independent of the study on file within one year.
An AI-ECG model developed at Mayo Clinic was used to estimate biological age, which was then compared to chronological age. Previous research shows that the AI-ECG age prediction represents the heart’s biological age. A positive age gap indicates accelerated biological aging, while a negative value suggests slower biological aging.
