Nicklaus Children’s Heart Institute Launches Bedside Transcatheter PDA Closure Offering for Newborns

New innovative capability brings lifesaving cardiac care directly to the NICU, reducing risks associated with transporting fragile premature infants.
October 16, 2025 – Nicklaus Children’s Heart Institute, a world-recognized leader in heart innovation, is now offering bedside transcatheter patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closures for medically fragile newborns. This new offering brings advanced therapy directly to the neonatal intensive care unit, allowing procedures to be performed within the baby’s own isolette or crib. This eliminates the need to transport the infant to a catheterization laboratory or even outside of their NICU room, removing any risks associated with moving fragile babies.

A PDA is a small blood vessel that normally closes after birth. In some premature infants, the vessel remains open, allowing extra blood to flow to the lungs. This can lead to breathing difficulties, feeding challenges, growth delays, and other complications. In cases where a PDA does not respond to medication or close on its own, closure may be needed to stabilize the infant’s condition. The minimally invasive procedure involves placing a small catheter through a vein to deliver a tiny device that seals the PDA from within.

The newly appointed chief of cardiovascular medicine and co-director of the Nicklaus Children’s Heart Institute, Dr. Shyam Sathanandam, is the pioneer of the minimally invasive technique now adopted by Nicklaus Children’s. Under his leadership, the Heart Institute is on track to become the first hospital in the nation to offer a traveling PDA closure program for children admitted at other hospitals throughout South Florida.

Tampa General Hospital Selects Krew Social to Address Team Member Loneliness, Burnout and Social Well-being

The goal of the partnership between Tampa General and Krew Social is to improve retention, reduce burnout and foster a thriving workplace culture for TGH’s most valuable asset – its people.

October 15, 2025 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH), one of the nation’s leading academic health systems, has partnered with Krew Social to tackle team member loneliness, burnout and social well-being — challenges that impact retention, patient safety and overall care quality.

“Our partnership with Krew Social is a pivotal step in providing the team with a tool to connect both inside and outside of work to avoid the common feeling of loneliness that people feel across the nation. In addition to investing in competitive benefits, compensation and total rewards, we believe that investing in our team’s social well-being will continue to enhance the feeling of belonging that exists today. This is one more way we foster an environment where people feel valued and empowered,” said Qualenta Kivett, executive vice president and chief people and talent officer at Tampa General.

Nationally, loneliness is widespread issue and directly impacts those who are actively in the workforce, including health care. Cigna estimates that workplace loneliness costs U.S. corporations $154 billion annually, primarily due to absenteeism, with 62% of employees reporting feelings of loneliness. Strong social connections at work have been proven to boost engagement, retention and patient care.

Krew Social is a patent-pending, map-based social well-being platform designed to foster meaningful connections through safe, in-person micro-events called “hangouts,” as well as the employer’s large events. Department leaders or individual team members can create hangouts and will include TGH’s Community Engagement, Spiritual Health and other teams that promote team and team member experience events.

Sekeres will serve a four-year term as councillor beginning after the 2025 ASH Annual Meeting, Dec. 6–9 in Orlando, Florida.

“It’s an incredible honor to serve alongside colleagues who are shaping the future of hematology,” Sekeres said. “ASH has long stood at the forefront of scientific rigor, clinical excellence, and advocacy for patients with blood disorders. Sarasota Memorial Participates in Research Study Testing aXess™ Dialysis Conduit

October 16, 2025 – People living with end-stage kidney disease require safe and dependable hemodialysis access. Common complications with existing dialysis access include infections, blood clots, and stenosis (narrowing of blood vessels). Sarasota Memorial’s Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute is now exploring a new treatment option in a clinical study aimed at providing a safer, more reliable access point for dialysis patients.

Led locally by vascular surgeon Jason Wagner, MD, the multi-center study sponsored by Xeltis is testing the safety and effectiveness of aXess, a restorative vascular access conduit. Developed using Xeltis’ proprietary Endogenous Tissue Restoration platform, which utilizes Nobel-prize winning breakthroughs in polymer technology, aXess is designed to safely integrate with the body. Over time, natural healing allows the patient’s own tissue to regenerate before gradually being absorbed and replaced, thus forming a new, natural, and long-living blood vessel. Over the course of the process, the aXess conduit dissolves completely, leaving behind a natural, stronger dialysis access point, comprised of the patients’ own cells and vascular tissue.

Delray Medical Center Earns Bronze-Level Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation

October 15, 2025 – Delray Medical Center, part of the Palm Beach Health Network, has earned Level 3 (Bronze) accreditation from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) as part of the Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) program. Beyond the Pink Ribbon: FAU Researcher Combats Breast Cancer in Younger Women

Oct. 9, 2025 – As National Breast Cancer Awareness Month gets underway, research from Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing is bringing attention to a concerning public health issue – early-onset breast cancer and the rising rates of breast cancer among women diagnosed under age 50.

Led by Tarsha Jones, RN, Ph.D., principal investigator and an associate professor in the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, the research focuses on young breast cancer survivors (YBCS) and highlights the critical importance of genetic testing, risk-reduction, and family risk communication. Supported by a multi-year grant from the National Institutes of Health, her study deepens the understanding of how younger women experience breast cancer and the unique challenges faced by this population.

Jones’ work is part of a growing call in the medical community to investigate why more women are being diagnosed younger, and how to provide equitable, evidence-based support – particularly as research suggests genetics only explain part of the picture. The research team conducted a cross-sectional study and surveyed 97 YBCS, all diagnosed under age 50, recruited from comprehensive cancer centers in New York and Florida. Additional women were also recruited through community-based organizations.

Key participant characteristics include:

Mean age at diagnosis: 39.8 years ± 6.78 standard deviation (9.3% were diagnosed before age 30; 36.1% were diagnosed between ages 30 to 39; and the majority, 54.6% were diagnosed between ages 40 to 49).
41.2% identified as Hispanic/Latina; 37.1% as non-Hispanic white; 16.5% as Black/African American; 2.1% Asian; and 3.1% other.
55.8% reported a family history of breast cancer.
Most common first warning sign? Felt a lump in the breast, discovered by chance or through a breast self- exam and not a mammogram.
Only 24.2% of women reported that their breast abnormality was first detected via a mammogram.
These insights underscore the need for greater awareness of early warning signs and proactive risk management. While mammograms remain a crucial screening tool, self-awareness and timely action can be lifesaving.

“Our data shows that genetics – such as pathogenic mutations or variants – is only part of the big picture. We found that while most women, 93%, completed genetic testing, the majority, 76.1%, had negative test results,” said Jones. “We recognize that there are multiple determinants of health at play, and more research is needed to investigate the complex interaction between biological, behavioral, psychological, social and environmental exposures in order to reduce cancer health disparities and improve health outcomes for all women.”

A Meeting of the Migraine Minds to Address Global Health Crisis

Dr. Fred Cohen, MD, founder of Headache Intervention, PLLC, and one of the few headache specialists in the U.S. trained in both Internal Medicine and Headache Medicine, recently led a seminar at the International Headache Congress (IHC) in Sao Paolo, Brazil on the mechanism of action of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in treating migraines.

–TOP U.S. MIGRAINE SPECIALIST PRESENTS NEW TREATMENTS AT INTERNATIONAL HEADACHE CONGRESS IN BRAZIL-

October 16, 2025– Climate change, hormonal shifts, and increased screen times know no geographical boundaries and unfortunately, are a few of the most prevalent triggers that have been causing a rise in migraine incidences around the world.  In fact, according to the National Institute of Health, in 2025, 3.1 billion people worldwide are estimated to be living with migraine, and it is the #1 cause of disability for women ages 18-50. To reverse this trend, top medical experts in the headache field gathered last month to share knowledge and learn about the latest advances in migraine diagnosis and treatment at the International Headache Congress (IHC) in Sao Paolo, Brazil on September 10-14, 2025.  One of those renowned colleagues is Dr. Fred Cohen, founder of Headache Intervention, PLLC, a migraine specialty practice in New York and Florida, and Assistant Professor of Medicine and Neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, presented a lecture on acute migraine treatments and also moderated sessions on the latest clinical developments in headache medicine.

“As a lifelong sufferer of chronic headaches, I understand the pain and frustration of what migraine patients experience on a daily basis,” said Dr. Cohen.  “Finding relief by seeking a highly skilled headache specialist is what transformed my life back then and what inspires me to do this type of work today.  Knowledge is power and this international conference will offer hope to billions of people as many new interventions will be discussed that can be used to alleviate their headache burden as well.”

Specifically, Dr. Cohen’s seminar focused on the mechanism of action of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in treating migraines by discussing common over-the-counter options for headaches, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin, as well as prescription NSAIDs including diclofenac and ketorolac. His presentation also highlighted Symbravo, a newly approved combination therapy that pairs the triptan rizatriptan with the NSAID meloxicam.

Hospital for Special Surgery and General Atlantic Launch National Platform to Expand Access to Orthopedic and Spine Outpatient Care

October 15, 2025 – Hospital for Special Surgery (“HSS”), the nation’s top-ranked orthopedic hospital, is joining General Atlantic, a leading global investor, in its launch of a new, independently operated national platform of ambulatory surgery centers (“ASCs”) dedicated to delivering advanced, patient-centered orthopedic and spine outpatient care. To support the platform’s buildout, HSS and General Atlantic have also agreed to acquire Legent Health (“Legent”), a portfolio company of BTG Pactual Strategic Capital (“Strat Cap”). Legent is a leading operator of orthopedic and spine facilities, providing an immediate foundation for scale and growth.

The platform represents a significant step forward in expanding patient access to high-quality, accessible orthopedic and spine care nationwide, while addressing rising demand for advanced outpatient solutions. Legent CEO Jordan Fowler will lead the new platform, which combines Legent’s proven operating infrastructure and experienced management team, HSS’s depth of clinical knowledge and community of more than 1,750 alumni surgeons, and General Atlantic’s expertise in building and scaling physician-aligned healthcare platforms.

Many procedures that once required hospital stays can now be performed safely and efficiently in ASCs. The new independent platform aims to expand patient access to advanced orthopedic and spine care closer to home, delivering lower-cost care with improved outcomes in a more comfortable environment. The platform is purpose-built to create lasting partnerships with surgeons and health systems, providing physicians with opportunities for ownership and alignment through meaningful equity participation, clinical autonomy, and special access to HSS’s clinical protocols and advisory services. This will enable physicians and health systems to participate in the site-of-care shift and benefit from ASC-level efficiencies and economics. Over time, HSS and General Atlantic intend to expand the platform nationally through acquisitions, new partnerships, and de novo facilities.

“As the world’s leading academic medical center specializing in musculoskeletal health since 1863, HSS has a special responsibility to deliver the highest-quality care, improve mobility, and enhance quality of life,” said Bryan Kelly, MD, MBA, President, CEO, and Surgeon-in-Chief Emeritus at HSS. “Through this collaboration, we will extend HSS’s clinical expertise and patient-first standards to markets where demand for orthopedic and spine care outpaces supply, and where quality care is limited outside the hospital setting.”
