THE FUTURE OF MEDICAL REAL ESTATE
By Rachel Puri
The landscape of healthcare is evolving at an unprecedented pace, and with it comes the transformation of medical real estate. Recognizing this, it is essential to shed light on the challenges faced by medical providers. As the demand for accessible and patient-centric care continues to rise, the need for innovative spaces for healthcare providers becomes paramount. Lina, a company dedicated to supporting independent health practitioners in private practice, stands at the forefront.
Current Issues in Medical Real Estate:
Medical providers, especially independent practitioners, often grapple with a multitude of challenges in the realm of real estate. Escalating rental costs, rigid lease terms, and limited customization options are some of the many hurdles faced by healthcare professionals. Additionally, the need for specialized infrastructure and compliance with stringent healthcare regulations further complicates finding suitable spaces for medical practice.
In many urban areas, prime medical real estate is scarce, leading to fierce competition among practitioners. This often results in compromises on location, size, or amenities, which can negatively impact the patient experience and overall efficiency of the practice. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of flexible and adaptable spaces that can accommodate changes in patient volume and treatment modalities.

MIAMI-DADE HOUSING AND HEALTH SUMMIT 2023
SUMMARY AND THOUGHTS ABOUT THE HOUSING CRISIS IN SOUTH FLORIDA By: Janisse Schoep, Health Foundation of South Florida and Annie Lorde, Miami Homes for All
South Florida’s housing crisis is one of the most significant social and economic challenges of our lifetime. The combination of spiraling costs and stagnant wages is a formula pushing economic prosperity and affordable housing out of reach for far too many of our neighbors. Housing stability is a cornerstone of individual and public health; without it, we cannot achieve optimal health. It is the bedrock upon which healthy communities are built and sustained. That is why we held Miami’s first-ever Housing and Health Summit on Nov. 29, with hundreds of local leaders in attendance. As stewards of South Florida’s future, our collective mission transcends the boundaries of our sectors. We represent a collaborative group of nonprofit leaders dedicated to exploring ways our healthcare and housing sectors can construct a foundation upon which our community can build.
The Summit was not just a gathering; it was a pragmatic conversation about an issue that touches the life of every South Floridian — a problem that is solvable with innovative thinking, cross-sector collaboration and community-focused initiatives tailored to the unique needs of South Florida’s diverse population. We must explore forward-thinking strategies to address housing as one of the main drivers of our community’s health. The Summit did just that, and we will continue to create the space for continued conversation. With the staggering numbers published last month in the Miami-Dade Housing Needs Assessment and the health disparities observed in our community, we cannot sustain a healthy, productive South Florida without stable, affordable housing.

Replicas of Ohio campus golden retrievers will tour the health system’s facilities in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and U.A.E., while taking followers behind-the-scenes in a social media campaign
December 1, 2023 – The healing spirit of two loyal Cleveland Clinic Children’s caregivers will be unleashed across the globe this December, as replicas of golden retrievers Kid and Trotter tour the health system’s facilities, highlighting medical breakthroughs, services that support patients and families, and expansion projects, while bringing attention to the clinical benefits of employing facility dogs.
Kid and Trotter are highly trained facility dogs that work in healthcare settings and perform specialized tasks. As full-time employees, they work at Ohio’s Cleveland Clinic Children’s facility, on main campus, supervised by Child Life specialist handlers. The dogs have a wide range of duties that help medical teams achieve their clinical goals, for example, by keeping children calm during medical interventions or providing an incentive for a child to get out of bed and take a walk.
Kid and Trotter play an invaluable role in supporting and comforting pediatric patients on a daily basis. The #PawsforJoy campaign celebrates the important work of these dogs while also highlighting new developments at Cleveland Clinic’s many locations around the world. The hope is the campaign will enable animal lovers of all ages to take a moment to pause for joy this festive season as they follow the daily adventures of these furry ambassadors on the @clevelandclinic Instagram account.

November 30, 2023- The Health Care District of Palm Beach County’s teaching hospital, Lakeside Medical Center, has been recognized by the Lown Institute for excellence in health equity and inclusivity. The institute awarded Lakeside Medical Center an “A” grade in both categories on the 2023-2024 Lown Institute Hospitals Index for Social Responsibility. Additionally, Lakeside Medical Center also received an “A” grade in Community Benefit, highlighting the hospital’s contributions to the community’s well-being.
The Lown Institute, a non-partisan think tank that advocates for a just healthcare system, evaluated Lakeside Medical Center against more than 3,600 hospitals nationwide, ranking it number three out of 168 hospitals in Florida for Health Equity and number three out of 161 hospitals in Florida for Inclusivity. Nationally, the hospital ranked 129th for Health Equity and 75th for Inclusivity.
The Inclusivity component evaluates the extent to which a hospital’s patient population reflects the demographics of the community in which it is located, based on race, income and education levels. This metric was developed using claims from the Medicare Provider Analysis and Review file (MEDPAR) and the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey from 2021. ACHE OF SOUTH FLORIDA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: BRIAN ALTSCHULER
As Vice President of Ancillary Operations, Brian Altschuler is responsible for myriad support services at Boca Regional Hospital, including such areas as pharmacy, laboratory, imaging, construction, security, food and nutrition – in essence, as he said, “all clinical and non-clinical ancillary departments at the entity level.” He acknowledged that encompasses a wide range and explained, for example, “We’re working on a massive facility plan that’s going to include a new bed tower, a new medical arts building, enhancing our infrastructure – basically redesigning our campus. My role on a day-to-day basis can be interacting with our corporate construction groups, and then the next hour I could be dealing with a family that has concerns about their loved one and needs assistance from one of our departments.”
Altschuler likes it that way because, he pointed out, “It’s a nice role because no day is the same, every hour is different.” He said his current role has evolved over the past several years, that he originally worked in the hospitality industry – including for Marriott International and Walt Disney World – and spent much time in operations. He then worked in human resources and organizational development in areas of healthcare, and that eventually expanded into this current role. “My career path is a winding road, I have a lot of diverse work experience and it’s really helped me evolve. I love what I’m doing. I’ve found my passion of interacting more with patients and families in my role, whereas my prior roles were wonderful because I worked a lot with the internal teams. Now I get to work with both.”
