May 21, 2024 – Florida Senate President Kathleen Passidomo appointed John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General Hospital, last month to serve as a member of the Health Care Innovation Council, a statewide volunteer organization established this year to advance innovation in health care as part of the Senate’s priority Live Healthy initiative.

“Florida can serve as a national model in delivering high-quality health care to all Floridians. With support from Senate President Kathleen Passidomo and other leaders on the state level, we can make strategic investments in innovation that have the potential to revolutionize the way we deliver care in the Sunshine State,” said Couris. “I’m honored to be a part of the new Health Care Innovation Council, where we will focus on dynamic and strategic solutions that can increase access, cut costs and improve patient outcomes.”

The Florida Legislature established the Live Healthy Innovation Council with the passage of Senate Bill 7018, proposed by the Senate Health Policy Committee and co-sponsored by Senator Gayle Harrell. Representative Karen Gonzalez Pittman sponsored the bill’s House companion. The Legislature passed SB 7018 during the 2024 legislative session with overwhelming support from both chambers. 3D BIOPRINTING: TRANSFORMING MEDICAL IMAGES INTO HUMAN TISSUE

May 21, 2024 – Mayo Clinic researchers are using technology to produce tissue models of different body parts to study damaged or diseased tissues and organs. They envision a day when a 3D bioprinter could mold living cells into a therapy or cure for complex disorders.

“3D bioprinters are just like the 3D printers that print small plastic toys or parts. Instead of using hard plastics or metals to construct a part or prototype, 3D bioprinters use biocompatible materials containing living cells to print three dimensional structures of tissue that could be used to improve human health,” says Kevin Dicker, Ph.D., a bioprinting expert and a process development staff scientist for the Center for Regenerative Biotherapeutics in Arizona. “Bioprinters are tools to accelerate research in the field of tissue engineering.”

6 WAYS TO CUT EHR BURDENS FOR PHYSICIANS

When Jane F. Fogg, MD, MPH, first became a doctor, patient charts were on paper. She looked forward to the rise of the EHR, believing electronic charting could help modernize the care she provided while also empowering herself and her patients.

Funny how things turn out.

“EHRs are a source of burnout—we have lots and lots of great evidence that has helped us understand the low usability and the high work burden that it adds to physicians,” Dr. Fogg, senior physician adviser at the AMA, said during a boot camp held at the Association’s Chicago headquarters. “Why that happened is that we didn’t spend the time and the care to design the EHR as we would design everything we do—our team-based care, our clinical practice, evidence-based medicine.”
