BROWARD HEALTH SURGEON ACHIEVES MILESTONE WITH 2,555 ROBOTIC-ASSISTED PROCEDURES
MARCH 23, 2026 -Alexander Parr, M.D., a board-certified general and bariatric surgeon with the Broward Health Physician Group, has reached a milestone achievement, performing his 2,555th robotic-assisted procedure using the Da Vinci® Surgical System at Broward Health Imperial Point, marking a significant landmark in his career and underscoring Broward Health’s commitment to advanced surgical technology.
“Reaching 2,555 robotic-assisted procedures is an exciting milestone, but more importantly it represents the thousands of patients who have been able to benefit from minimally invasive surgery,” said Dr. Parr. “For a lot of gastric bypass and sleeve patients, these procedures are truly lifechanging.”
Robotic-assisted procedures allow surgeons to perform complex operations through smaller incisions, often resulting in less pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times for patients.
A recent complex case, his 2,500th, involved a robotic sleeve gastrectomy performed using the Da Vinci® Xi surgical system on a patient with severe obesity. Dr. Parr noted that the patient had one of the largest stomachs he had encountered, which, combined with a significantly thick abdominal wall, made the procedure more technically challenging. However, the enhanced precision and visualization provided by the robotic platform allowed the surgery to be performed safely and effectively. The patient has since made a full recovery and has experienced substantial weight loss following the bariatric procedure.

BROWARD HEALTH GME’S DESK TO DOCS MENTORSHIP PROGRAM PAIRS DOCTORS AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
March 24, 2026 – The Broward Health Office of Graduate Medical Education (GME) hosted its second in-person Desk to Docs mentorship event, bringing together high school students and physician mentors for an evening of engagement, inspiration and hands-on medical simulation.
“Mentorship is one of the most powerful tools we have in medicine,” said Patricia Rowe-King, M.D., Broward Health’s designated institutional official. “Through Desk to Docs, our residents can share their experiences, answer questions and help students from our community envision themselves one day wearing the white coat.”
Now in its fifth year, the Desk to Docs program was previously held exclusively online. The initiative pairs high school students interested in science, technology, engineering and healthcare careers with Broward Health GME residents from a variety of medical specialties, providing guidance and insight into the path toward becoming a physician.
This year’s program includes 39 mentor-mentee pairs. For months, students and their physician mentors have been meeting virtually, making this event their first opportunity to meet face-to-face at Broward Health Medical Center’s new GME space.

State designation builds on TGH Cancer Institute’s national accolades and marks a significant milestone.
March 24, 2026 – The Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Cancer Institute, in partnership with the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, earned the state’s designation as Cancer Center of Excellence in recognition of its excellence in quality, comprehensive and innovative patient-centered care.
The designation, awarded by the Florida Department of Health after a thorough review by the Florida Cancer Control and Research Advisory Council and members of the Biomedical Research Advisory Council, celebrates academic institutions and hospitals that exceed service standards and excel in providing quality, comprehensive and patient-centered care and cancer research.
“Patients in the fight for their lives choose Tampa General Hospital and its Cancer Institute for world-class cancer care. The designation of the TGH Cancer Institute as a Cancer Center of Excellence is a testament to our academic-rooted and patient-centered approach, cross-collaboration of our teams, access to cutting-edge treatments and therapies and our ability to provide patients the best possible chance at the best possible outcome,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Florida Health Sciences Center | Tampa General Hospital. “Congratulations to the leadership of the TGH Cancer Institute, the care teams who deliver the exceptional care, and the researchers whose breakthroughs helped earn this well-deserved recognition.”

Shortness of Breath Leads to Quadruple Bypass at Broward Health
Active 81-year-old Broward Health cardiac patient receives life-saving care
March 25, 2026 – At 81, Parkland resident Larry Dorety is always active, playing tennis several times a week. A retired Silicon Valley computer industry executive who left the workforce at 51, Larry likes to joke that he has “more years of retirement than work, and I’m very good at it.” These days, his schedule revolves around travel with his wife and visits with children and grandchildren across the country.
But last December, Larry began noticing something seemed a little off.
“I found myself running out of breath and unable to continue playing tennis,” Larry recalled. “I’d tell my friends, ‘I’m sorry, I can’t do a second set.’ That’s not like me.”
The shortness of breath had been creeping up slowly until it became impossible to ignore. There was no dramatic chest pain or moment of collapse, just a steady loss of stamina that didn’t make sense for someone as active as he was.

Agent Orange Linked to Aggressive Bone Marrow Cancer in Vietnam Veterans
While this study does not prove cause and effect, it provides the strongest data to date linking Agent Orange exposure with more aggressive disease. “We’re hoping that the Institute of Medicine will recognize that Agent Orange exposure is a risk factor for MDS,” said Mikkael A. Sekeres, M.D. “We hope this publication helps to finally get these veterans the service-connected care they deserve.”
Study identifies genetic mutations tied to earlier diagnosis and faster progression of myelodysplastic syndromes
March 23, 2026 – More than 50 years after Agent Orange was used in Vietnam, a new national study published online ahead of print in Blood Advances highlights the genetic changes that link exposure to Agent Orange to myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), a group of bone marrow cancers that can progress to acute leukemia. The findings shed light on why some veterans develop more severe bone marrow cancers and will hopefully help these individuals obtain access to needed, service-connected care.
The research, led by Mikkael A. Sekeres, M.D., chief of hematology at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, expands on findings he presented at the 2025 American Society of Hematology (ASH) Annual Meeting.
“In the initial work presented at ASH, we had seen an association between Agent Orange exposure and developing MDS,” Sekeres said. “Now we are describing how the disease biology looks different in this exposed group.”
Agent Orange is an herbicide that was used by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War to remove forest cover and destroy crops. It often contained a highly toxic form of dioxin, a chemical that disrupts cellular processes. Approximately 2.6 million U.S. service members were potentially exposed.
Agent Orange has already been linked to several cancers, including certain lymphomas and multiple myeloma. Until the ASH presentation, evidence connecting it to MDS has been limited.
