MEMORIAL NEUROSCIENCE INSTITUTE FIRST IN SOUTH FLORIDA TO USE LATEST ANEURYSM TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY
Next Generation Device Prevents Ruptures, Bleeding
May 1, 2024 – As a veterinarian in Cuba, Xiomara Delgado was used to providing clinical expertise to patients and families. Now retired and living in Miami, the 77-year-old doctor was recently on the other side of a diagnosis, and it wasn’t a good one.
Delgado periodically suffered from very painful headaches that were severe enough to require a visit to Memorial. A brain scan revealed several aneurysms, any one of which would leave her a less than 50% chance of survival if it burst. In that situation, even if the elderly woman managed to survive the bleeding in her brain, she’d still likely be left with permanent damage, according to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation.
Delgado was immediately referred to Brijesh P. Mehta, MD, medical director of Neurointerventional Surgery and the Comprehensive Stroke Program at Memorial Neuroscience Institute. Mehta is one of approximately 20 physicians in the U.S. trained to use Medtronic’s Pipeline Vantage device for treatment of brain aneurysms. As a result, Memorial was the only healthcare system in South Florida selected to use the company’s next generation technology, which is approved by the FDA but has had a limited release while additional data on its effectiveness is compiled.

ROCHESTER, Minn. May 2, 2024 — Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy promotes relatively rapid weight loss, reduces obesity-related health issues and improves eligibility for kidney transplantation for patients with advanced chronic kidney disease and obesity, according to new research from Mayo Clinic.
Patients with advanced chronic kidney failure and severe obesity often are not considered for kidney transplantation, but according to a study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, sleeve gastrectomy can improve high-risk patients meeting the criteria for transplantation. Avid scuba divers here in Southwest Florida and beyond know all too well the dangers of decompression sickness, a condition that occurs when divers ascend too fast from a high-pressure to a lower-pressure environment.
Divers have long relied on hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) to treat the condition, also known as “the bends.” Breathing pure, 100% oxygen in a high-pressure chamber can increase oxygen in tissues and plasma, enhancing energy and eliminating accumulated toxins.

RESEARCHERS REVIEW FINDINGS AND CLINICAL MESSAGES FROM THE WOMEN’S HEALTH INITIATIVE 30 YEARS AFTER LAUNCH
Data from influential study underscore the importance of personalized and shared decision-making to support the health of postmenopausal women.
MAY 1, 2024 – A new review in JAMA(link is external) highlights key findings and clinical messages from the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), the largest women’s health study in the United States. The WHI is supported by the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and was created to study factors that may reduce risks for cardiovascular disease, cancer, hip fractures, and other conditions in postmenopausal women. More than 68,000 women enrolled in clinical trials between 1993 and 1998 and were followed for up to 20 years.
After reviewing these long-term data, the researchers explain the primary findings:
Hormone therapy and menopause. The WHI study found that estrogen or a combination of estrogen and progestin, two types of hormone replacement therapies, had varying outcomes with chronic conditions, and the evidence does not support the use of these therapies to reduce risks for chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and dementia. The study was not designed to assess the effects of FDA-approved hormone therapies for treating menopausal symptoms, the benefits of which had been established before the WHI study began.

ENDURANCE EXERCISE AFFECTS ALL TISSUES OF THE BODY, EVEN THOSE NOT NORMALLY ASSOCIATED WITH MOVEMENT
NIH-funded project in rats also finds widespread differences between male and female organisms.
MAY 1, 2024 – A large research project in young adult rats has found that that all bodily tissues tested respond to exercise training, amounting to over 35,000 biological molecules that respond and adapt to endurance exercise over time, including tissues from organs not usually associated with exercise. Researchers also found differences in responses between male and female rats that were more widespread than anticipated, highlighting the importance of including animals of both sexes in pre-clinical research. The effort, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), used data from thousands of analyses of 19 tissue types and identified molecular changes in genes, proteins, and metabolites, which are substances essential to the metabolism of a particular organism or to a particular metabolic process. The findings are published in a group of papers in Nature.
