BROWARD HEALTH MEDICAL CENTER ADVANCES NEUROSURGERY WITH MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY

September 5, 2024 – Broward Health Medical Center is taking neurosurgery to the next level with the addition of Medtronic’s cutting-edge StealthStation™8 technology. This advanced system allows surgeons to perform even more precise and minimally invasive procedures, leading to better outcomes for patients.

This state-of-the-art surgical navigation system is designed to help neurosurgeons perform brain and spine surgery by visualizing a patient’s anatomy, guiding instruments in the body and placing implants with precision.

“We’re thrilled to integrate the latest advancements in technology, which will empower us to achieve exceptional outcomes and elevate the standard of care for our patients,” said Daniel Klinger, M.D., a neurosurgeon for Broward Health.

The StealthStation™8 navigation system helps allow for tailored procedures based on unique patient anatomy and provides real-time visualization throughout the surgery. Through its minimally invasive techniques, patients can experience smaller incisions, leading to reduced blood loss and often a shorter hospital stay.

Holy Cross Health Now Offers FARAPULSE™ Pulsed Field Ablation to Treat Atrial Fibrillation

The newly approved equipment is found to be safer and more efficient than traditional ablations

September 6, 2024 – The cardiology team at Holy Cross Health recently performed their first procedure with the newly approved FARAPULSE™ Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) System to treat a patient with atrial fibrillation, the most common type of arrhythmia.

The FARAPULSE PFA System is a unique new alternative to standard-of-care thermal ablation. A non-thermal approach for the treatment of drug-refractory, recurrent, symptomatic and paroxysmal (i.e., intermittent) atrial fibrillation (AF), it is proven to be an effective treatment option for patients while minimizing risks associated with thermal ablation.

“Instead of using cold or heat energy, the FARAPULSE PFA System uses short bursts of high energy targeting the heart tissue which will lead to a normal rhythm,” explained Adrienne Wolfson MSN, BHA, R.N., CCRN, Executive Director Nursing Administration at Holy Cross Health. “It’s safer and faster than conventional
ablations.”

“DBS” SURGERY, DONE ROBOTICALLY AND WHILE THE PATIENT IS ASLEEP, DELIVERING LIFE-CHANGING RESULTS

September 5, 2024 – The symptoms appeared slowly at first for Tahira Riaz, with tremors in her right hand the only sign that something was amiss. Before long, however, the Pembroke Pines resident was experiencing stiffness throughout her body and walking became difficult. Next came slowed speech, memory lapses, and the inability to stand at all.

Although she didn’t know it at the time, and wasn’t yet 40 years of age, Riaz had Parkinson’s disease, a chronic, progressive disorder that affects the area of the brain that controls movement and coordination. She was confined to a wheelchair as the condition worsened and most days never left her home.

While medication after her diagnosis initially helped with Riaz’s symptoms, a series of falls that caused injuries underscored that drugs alone were not a long-term solution. That’s when she was referred to Dr. Christopher DeMassi, a neurosurgeon and chief of Memorial Neuroscience Institute. “I had lost everything and was crying,” said Riaz at that first meeting with Dr. DeMassi. “Please help me.”

HCA Florida Mercy Hospital Adopts HeartFlow Analysis, a Novel Diagnostic Tool for Heart Disease

This personalized, color-coded 3-D model of a patient’s coronary arteries provides functional information (or blood pressure measurements) about each blockage utilizing HeartFlow

Incorporating a HeartFlow analysis can help more accurately determine if a person with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD) should be treated for heart disease.

September 5, 2024 – HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, a 488-bed facility, and part of HCA Florida Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in the state, is among the first sites in Miami-Dade County to offer a proven, non-invasive diagnostic option for people with suspected heart disease. The HeartFlow FFRCT (fractional flow reserve computed tomography), a non-invasive clinical pathway for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD), applies AI algorithms to create an anatomical model of a person’s heart that helps physicians visualize the blood flow and detect stenosis, or plaque that obstructs the blood flow.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for adults in the United States, and CAD is the most common type of heart disease, affecting nearly half the adult population.1,2 CAD develops when the arteries leading to the heart narrow or become blocked, which may lead to a reduction in blood flow to the heart. This can cause chest pain, heart attacks and death.

“The fractional flow reserve computed tomography analysis completely changes this paradigm, providing essential information that can help us determine the right approach for a patient through a convenient, non-invasive platform,” said Allyssa Tobitt, Chief Executive Officer, HCA Florida Mercy Hospital.

Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month: Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Pedro Martinez-Clark, a Renowned Interventional Cardiologist in South Florida

As National Hispanic Heritage Month begins, celebrated annually from September 15 to October 15, we take this opportunity to recognize the remarkable contributions of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.

September 15, 2024 – Among those making a significant impact in South Florida and beyond during Hispanic Heritage Month is Pedro Martinez-Clark, MD, FACC. Dr. Martinez-Clark is a highly esteemed Harvard-trained physician, one of the nation’s leading cardiologists and leader of the Miami Initiative to Stop Amputations (MISA). In 2017, Dr. Martinez-Clark established Amavita Heart & Vascular Health™ in Miami, an advanced medical practice that focuses on providing comprehensive cardiovascular care. The Amavita Foundation, a nonprofit arm of Amavita recently launched (MISA) with a mission to tackle the rising rates of amputations due to peripheral artery disease (PAD). Dr. Martinez-Clark is passionate in his focus on the treatment of PAD, also known as peripheral vascular disease (PVD). PAD is a condition that occurs when arteries outside the brain and heart narrow, reducing blood flow to the extremities.

September is also Peripheral Artery Disease Awareness Month. The month focuses on a chronic condition that causes blockages in the leg arteries with more than 20 million suffering from the disease in the U.S. alone, and an estimated 200,000 of them suffering avoidable amputations. Symptoms of PAD include leg pain, muscle atrophy, leg hair loss, smooth, shiny skin, decreased pulses in feet, skin that is cool to the touch, and sores/ulcers in the legs/feet that don’t heal.

Perimenopause, menopause and … weightlifting? Expert explains value for bone health

September 4, 2024 – Menopause affects women all the way to their bones, and that is why building skeletal health is especially important during perimenopause and after menopause, says May Al-Araji, MBChB, a women’s health and family medicine expert at Mayo Clinic Healthcare in London. This is a good time to add strength-training activities such as weightlifting to your exercise routine, Dr. Al-Araji says.

“Menopause has a multisystem effect. It can affect you literally from top to bottom, including your skin, hair, brain, central nervous system, heart, organs and skeletal system,” she explains.

Putting stress on bones during perimenopause and after menopause can increase bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

“Weight-resistance exercises are really key for bone health,” Dr. Al-Araji says.

But that doesn’t mean that you must become a bodybuilder.

“It’s all about resistance,” Dr. Al-Araji explains. “You build it up gradually.”

Mayo Clinic study finds dysfunctional white blood cells linked to heightened melanoma risk

September 5, 2024 – About 8 to 10 million Americans over age 40 have an overabundance of cloned white blood cells, or lymphocytes, that hamper their immune systems. Although many who have this condition — called monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (MBL) — do not experience any symptoms, a new study shows they may have an elevated risk for several health complications, including melanoma, a form of skin cancer. The findings, by Mayo Clinic researchers, are published in a new paper in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

People with MBL fall along a spectrum that spans from a low amount to a high amount of these dysfunctional lymphocytes. Previous research has shown that MBL is a precursor to a type of blood and bone marrow cancer known as chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). People with CLL also have a heightened risk of melanoma.

“Our study is the first to show that people with this pre-cancerous stage of MBL have a 92% elevated risk of developing melanoma. The risk of melanoma is similar to what we see among people with chronic lymphocytic leukemia,” says Susan Slager, Ph.D., researcher with the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center and senior author of the study.

CAMTS RELEASES DRAFT FOR COMMENTS MOBILE INTEGRATE HEALTHCARE (MIH) PROGRAM ACCREDITATION STANDARDS

September 9, 2024 – The Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) is proud to announce the release of a draft of the second edition of national accreditation standards for Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH) Programs. The first edition of the MIH Standards was published in April 2022. The MIH standards reflect several years work from national leaders in mobile integrated health services. According to Dudley Smith, Associate Executive of CAMTS, “We don’t look at these as “our” standards, but as MIH standards that are developed by those that do the job every day. Regardless of the type of program you are, or even if you never plan to seek accreditation, we greatly value and appreciate the comments and suggestions we receive from these dedicated care providers, administrators and patients.”

These standards represent a collaborative work intended to recognize the future of both paramedicine and integrated approaches to the delivery of the entire spectrum of care from social services to advanced clinical specialties. Input from both practitioners and leaders is vital to ensuring the standards recognize the pioneering work being done across the US and around the world.

Study Finds Clues In Your Blood Could Help Assess Traumatic Brain Injuries Within Minutes Of Impact

New research could inform how TBIs are treated in sports, military and hospital settings

September 4, 2024 – Groundbreaking research published on Wednesday shows that clues in your blood could help assess traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) within 30 minutes of impact, much sooner than previously known. The first-of-its-kind study, published in JAMA Network Open, marks a significant milestone that could inform how TBIs are treated in multiple areas including on the sidelines of sporting events, in military settings and in the field when ambulance crews respond to a patient before transporting them to a hospital. The study builds on decades of research by Dr. Linda Papa, lead author of the study and Director of Academic Clinical Research at Orlando Health.

According to the National Institutes of Health, traumatic brain injury from accidents or sports is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States. And the CDC estimates that 2.5 million people visited the emergency department for TBIs in just one year.

Machine Learning Helps Identify Rheumatoid Arthritis Subtypes

September 2024 – A digital pathology approach that can distinguish subtypes of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) using a machine-learning tool created by Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) and Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) investigators may help scientists find ways to improve care for this complex condition.

The study published August 29 in Nature Communications shows that artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies can effectively and efficiently subtype pathology samples from patients with RA.

For this study, Dr. Richard Bell, an Instructor in the HSS Research Institute and Arthritis and Tissue Degeneration Program, and Lionel B. Ivashkiv,  MD, Chief Scientific Officer at HSS teamed up with  Dr. Fei Wang, a professor of population health sciences and the founding director of the Institute of AI for Digital Health (AIDH) in the Department of Population Health Sciences at Weill Cornell Medicine.

DALLAS, September 6, 2024  ̶  Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women, and gaps in care and access persist between women and men.
