Exploring Reasons for Higher Breast Cancer Risk Among Caribbean Women

New Study From Sylvester Cancer Suggests Disproportionate Rates May Be Linked to Changes in Reproductive Health

MIAMI, FLORIDA – Oct. 24, 2024 – A new study from researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, suggests that higher breast cancer rates among Caribbean women may be linked to shifting patterns in their reproductive health.

The findings, published Oct. 8 in JAMA Network Open, showed that women diagnosed recently with breast cancer have had fewer babies than previous generations, and they experienced their first periods at earlier ages.

Having first menstrual cycles, known as menarche, at earlier ages and giving birth to fewer children are known risk factors for breast cancer.

Breast cancer takes a major toll on Caribbean women. They are commonly diagnosed at a younger age than women in the U.S., and have one of the highest mortality rates worldwide from the disease.

Naples, FL, October 24, 2024 — Beginning January 1, 2025, Florida Blue will eliminate access to NCH primary care providers for approximately 6,000 Medicare Advantage plan members in Southwest Florida. While the agreement ensures that NCH remains in-network for all other Florida Blue members, it will not include coverage for Medicare Advantage participants seeking primary care services.

In addition to Florida Blue, Cigna has announced that it will also discontinue coverage for primary care providers in Florida through its Medicare Advantage plan, reflecting a growing trend among insurance payers to scale back coverage accessed through Medicare Advantage.

Mayo Clinic study: What standing on one leg can tell you

October 23, 2024 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — How long a person can stand — on one leg — is a more telltale measure of aging than changes in strength or gait, according to new Mayo Clinic research. The study appears today in the journal PLOS ONE.

Good balance, muscle strength and an efficient gait contribute to people’s independence and well-being as they age. How these factors change, and at what rate, can help clinicians develop programs to ensure healthy aging. Individually, people can train their balance without special equipment and work on maintaining it over time.

In this study, 40 healthy, independent people over 50 underwent walking, balance, grip strength and knee strength tests. Half of the participants were under 65; the other half were 65 and older.

Mayo Clinic performs its first paired living liver donation

Liver swap gives two patients a second chance at life

October 23, 2024 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — Surgeons recently performed Mayo Clinic’s first paired living liver donation, a significant first step in helping more people with liver failure get a lifesaving transplant.

“Liver transplantation is the only treatment option for most people with end-stage liver disease. But sadly, there are not enough donated livers available for everyone who needs one. That is why living liver donation is so important,” says Timucin Taner, M.D., Ph.D., division chair of Transplant Surgery at Mayo Clinic who led the team that completed the clinic’s first paired liver donation.

At any given time, there are approximately 10,000 people on the waiting list for a liver transplant in the U.S. Approximately 20% of people on the list will die waiting for a transplant. Living liver transplant offers another option, but only 6% of liver transplants performed last year came from living donors, according to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network.

Scare Up the Fun, Not the Scary Eye Infections this Halloween

Costume contact lenses sold without a prescription may cause permanent eye damage, including blindness

Tallahassee, Fla. – October 23, 2024 – If your Halloween plans include scary eyes, beware of costume contact lenses labeled “one size fits all” or “no need to see an eye doctor.” Costume lenses must be prescribed and fitted by an eye care professional, just like regular contact lenses. Otherwise, you may be haunted by an eye infection long after the fun of Halloween is over. The American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Florida Society of Ophthalmology (FSO) urge the public to only buy decorative contacts from retailers who require a prescription and sell FDA-approved products.

“Costume contact lenses may seem like the perfect, easy way to complete your spooky look. But the consequences of using costume lenses are much scarier than the zombie eye you may have been going for,” said Dianna Seldomridge, MD, clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
