BROWARD HEALTH DECREASES MILLAGE RATE FOR THIRD YEAR IN A ROW

Tax Revenues to Decrease by $17 Million

September 18, 2025 – After a successful year in which Broward Health served almost 1.3 million patients, the North Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners tonight unanimously voted to cut taxes. The millage rate reduction from 1.3261 to 1.2391 mills will result in $17 million less in tax revenues for Broward Health and is greater than the county proposed rollback rate.

“We are proud that Broward Health has seen continued growth, increasing our patient volumes and revenues, thus affording us this opportunity to reduce taxpayer support,” said Paul Tanner, chair of the North Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners.

This is the third year in a row the Board has reduced the millage rate.

“Since 2023, the Board has saved the taxpayers of Broward County almost $50 million, not including the $17 million from this year’s reduced millage rate,” said Shane Strum, President & CEO of Broward Health. “The ability to decrease the millage rate is a reflection of Broward Health’s strong financial performance, also recognized the last several years by S&P, Fitch and Moody’s. We are committed to building upon that momentum in the coming year and beyond.”

Physicians: Help Florida Seniors Make Informed Decisions

Miami-Dade and Broward County Medical Associations along with other county associations in Florida are promoting this survey:

Your input is extremely valuable to Florida’s seniors as they evaluate their options between Traditional Medicare and the various Medicare Advantage Plans available.

Each October, seniors are inundated with marketing and promotional materials promoting the benefits of switching from Traditional Medicare to Medicare Advantage. However, these materials often lack sufficient information about the rights and protections seniors may be relinquishing by making that switch.

The feedback provided by physicians through this survey will be instrumental in helping Florida’s seniors make informed decisions. Physician organizations across the state are working to develop an annual guide to help seniors and their caregivers assess plan performance and choose the option that best fits their needs.

We encourage you to invite fellow physicians to complete the survey. The more data we collect, the more comprehensive and impactful this guide will be for Florida’s senior community.

NICU Awareness Month: Twins Reunite with NICU Nurse at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital

September 20, 2025 – In August 2010, twin sisters Amanda and Andrea Ojeda entered the world far too soon. Born at just 27 weeks after a rupture of membranes, the girls spent 69 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where their mother, Karen Ojeda, remained at their bedside.

During those critical weeks, NICU nurse Edith Suarez was by their side providing around-the-clock care and support. This September, as part of NICU Awareness Month, Amanda and Andrea—now thriving teenagers—joined their mother at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital to thank Suarez and to spend time with other NICU nurses who continue to support families through their earliest and most challenging days.

STUDY: Glioblastoma Cells “Unstick” From Their Neighbors to Become More Deadly

Surprising finding suggests that GBM cells that “cluster” together with other cells of the same type are less deadly than those that disperse from these clusters

Sylvester researchers used leading-edge technology to study glioblastoma tumors at unprecedented detail.

Looking at the locations of individual tumor cell types allowed them to find that “dispersed” glioblastoma cells are more malleable and more aggressive than their “clustered” counterparts.

Their findings, corroborated in breast cancer samples as well, point to a possible new general principle of solid tumor biology.

MIAMI, FLORIDA – Sept. 18, 2025  – A new study, led by researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, captured details of glioblastoma that had never before been seen and revealed a surprise finding: Glioblastoma cells that “cluster” together with other cells of the same type are less deadly than those that disperse from these clusters. The findings were also corroborated in breast cancer samples and point to a possible new general principle of solid tumor biology.

The study was led by Anna Lasorella, M.D., co-director of the Sylvester Brain Tumor Institute (SBTI) and director of Sylvester’s Precision Medicine Initiative, and Antonio Iavarone, M.D., director of the SBTI and deputy director of Sylvester. The team published a paper describing their findings Sept.18 in the journal Cancer Cell.

FMA: New rule signals the end of fax machines in medical offices

September 17, 2025  – A transformative federal regulation, effective Oct. 1, 2025, is poised to phase out fax machines in doctors’ offices by modernizing health information technology (IT) systems. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued the Health Data, Technology, and Interoperability (HTI-4) rule, which requires healthcare IT systems to provide real-time access to prior authorization requirements and prescription drug pricing during patient appointments. The goal is to enhance communication between physicians and insurers, reducing reliance on fax machines — a technology lingering in medical practices due to its compliance with HIPAA privacy standards.

The HTI-4 rule, part of a 2,000-page policy update, enables doctors and patients to instantly check drug costs, explore cheaper alternatives, submit prior authorization requests, and monitor their status. HHS estimates these changes could save providers millions of hours, valued at $19 billion over a decade. HHS leaders called it a regulatory breakthrough, emphasizing reduced administrative burdens and improved care delivery. Mehmet Oz, MD, head of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, added that the rule promotes “less red tape, faster answers, and more time focused on care.”

Sugary drinks may increase risk of metastasis in advanced colorectal cancer

Preclinical study provides first direct evidence linking colorectal cancer metastasis to the glucose-fructose blend found in sugar-sweetened beverages

Metastasis is the leading cause of death among patients with colorectal cancer

The combination of glucose and fructose, found in most sodas and fruit juices, activates the SORD enzyme, fueling cancer cell migration and metastasis

Study suggests cutting back on sugary drinks could help slow cancer progression in patients with colorectal cancer and points to possible new treatment targets

HOUSTON, SEPTEMBER 19, 2025 – A new study from researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center shows that the glucose-fructose mix found in sugary drinks directly fuels metastasis in preclinical models of advanced colorectal cancer. The study was published today in Nature Metabolism.

September 18, 2025 – Throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Promise Fund is issuing a breast & cervical cancer screening challenge to communities in Palm Beach, Broward, and Martin Counties: to screen and refer as many women as possible in just 31 days.

The South Florida–based nonprofit is dedicated to increasing survivorship from breast and cervical cancer, and is calling on hospitals, clinics, nonprofits, and grassroots organizations to join forces in this initiative. As part of the October Screening Challenge, we remind women to stay current with life-saving screenings. Repeated head impacts cause early neuron loss and inflammation in young athletes

NIH-funded study reveals brain changes long before chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) develops.

September 17, 2025 – Research supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) shows that repeated head impacts from contact sports can cause early and lasting changes in the brains of young- to middle-aged athletes. The findings show that these changes may occur years before chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) develops its hallmark disease features, which can now only be detected by examining brain tissue after death.

“This study underscores that many changes in the brain can occur after repetitive head impacts,” said Walter Koroshetz, M.D., director of NIH’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). “These early brain changes might help diagnose and treat CTE earlier than is currently possible now.”

NIH launches landmark project on whole-person health and function

September 17, 2025 – The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched an effort to advance research on whole-person health and create an integrated knowledge network of healthy physiological function. Whole person health involves looking at the whole person—not just separate organs or body systems—and considering multiple factors that promote health. For example, a multicomponent lifestyle intervention including healthy diet, physical activity and stress management may improve multiple and interconnected aspects of health including cardiovascular (e.g. blood pressure), metabolic (e.g. glucose metabolism) and musculoskeletal function (e.g. muscle strength).

ACIP Recommends COVID-19 Immunization Based on Individual Decision-making

SEPTEMBER 19, 2025 — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) today unanimously recommended that vaccination for COVID-19 be determined by individual decision-making.

ACIP’s recommendation applies to all individuals six months and older. It includes an emphasis that the risk-benefit of vaccination in individuals under age 65 is most favorable for those who are at an increased risk for severe COVID-19 and lowest for individuals who are not at an increased risk, according to the CDC list of COVID-19 risk factors.

Individual decision-making is referred to on the CDC’s adult and child immunization schedules as vaccination based on shared clinical decision-making, which references providers including physicians, nurses, and pharmacists. It allows for immunization coverage through all payment mechanisms including entitlement programs such as the Vaccines for Children Program, Children’s Health Insurance Program, Medicaid, and Medicare, as well as insurance plans through the federal Health Insurance Marketplace.

ACIP Recommends Standalone Chickenpox Vaccination in Toddlers

SEPTEMBER 18, 2025—The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) today voted to adopt a new recommendation for the child immunization schedule, while ensuring that all children receive immunizations for measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox from 12 months of age.

The Committee by a vote of eight to three recommends that toddlers through age three be immunized for varicella (chickenpox) through standalone vaccination rather than through the combination measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (MMRV) vaccine.

The CDC Immunization Safety Office’s presentation [PDF, 789 KB] to ACIP showed that healthy 12–23 months old toddlers have increased risk of febrile seizure seven to 10 days after MMRV vaccination compared to those given separate immunization for varicella and measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR). This excess risk from MMRV accounts for approximately five more febrile seizures per 10,000 doses, without conferring additional protection from varicella.
