Memorial Healthcare System Opens Douglas Road ER in Pembroke Pines

Transforming a Trusted Community 24/7 Care Center into an Expanded Emergency Room
July 21, 2026 – Today, the South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners, elected officials, community leaders and other stakeholders celebrated the new Memorial Healthcare System Douglas Road ER with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event marked the transformation of Memorial’s longtime 24/7 Care Center into a larger, more advanced freestanding emergency room that expands access to high-level emergency care for residents of Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

The new freestanding emergency room, located at 801 S. Douglas Road, officially opens to the public in August 2026. The expanded 30,000-square-foot facility was designed to provide rapid emergency care for adults and children while remaining fully connected to Memorial Healthcare System’s network of hospitals, specialists and follow-up care services.

Unlike urgent care centers, Douglas Road ER is a licensed emergency department of Memorial Hospital Pembroke, equipped to provide advanced diagnostics, initial trauma stabilization and emergency care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The facility features 41 treatment spaces, including 18 private adult treatment rooms, four dedicated pediatric treatment rooms, 16 fast-track rooms, five triage bays, a trauma and resuscitation room, a dedicated procedure room, a bariatric room and a quiet room. Advanced imaging capabilities include 24-hour CT scans, X-rays and ultrasound, along with a full-service on-site laboratory to support fast, efficient emergency evaluation and treatment.

Holy Cross Health Is Florida’s Only Acute Care Hospital to Earn “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality High Performer” Designation from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation

Members of the Holy Cross Health community outreach team at the 2026 Stonewall Pride event in Wilton Manors, Florida

Holy Cross Health is one of just three health care organizations in Florida to earn a top-tier 2026 Healthcare Equality Index designation

July 20, 2026 – Holy Cross Health announced it earned the “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality High Performer” designation from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC). The honor was awarded as part of HRC’s 2026 Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), the industry standard benchmarking tool for LGBTQ+ inclusion and equity practices in the healthcare field, conducted every two years.

Nearly 750 health care facilities actively participated in the HEI 2026 survey and scoring process. Of those participants, 343 received the “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality High Performer” designation.

Holy Cross Health is one of only three health care organizations statewide to receive a top-tier HEI 2026 designation, and the only acute care hospital in Florida to do so — underscoring the health system’s distinct role in delivering LGBTQ+-inclusive, full-service acute care to South Florida.

“At Holy Cross Health, we are committed to providing every patient with access to safe, respectful, compassionate and dignified care,” said Pierre Monice, MBA, FACHE, President and CEO of Holy Cross Health. “We are proud, once again, to have earned the High Performer designation from HRC.”

AHA: Court rules that companies may not impose 340B rebate model without HHS approval

JULY 21 2026 The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia July 21 upheld a lower court’s decision that Section 340B of the Public Health Service Act does not permit drug companies to impose proposed rebate models on 340B purchasers unless the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services approves. The court did not weigh in on the lawfulness of the department’s proposed rebate program or any other version of a rebate model that it could approve.

“The manufacturers’ reading would also counterintuitively let manufacturers, rather than the Secretary, take the lead in administering the 340B Program, rendering the Secretary’s role largely reactive,” the court explained. “Put simply, the statute places the Secretary, not the manufacturers, in the driver’s seat of this important program.”

AHA comments to CMS on proposed rule covering Medicaid supplemental payments

JULY 21, 2026 – The AHA provided comments July 21 to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services on its proposed rule to modify policies governing Medicaid state-directed payments as authorized under the July 2025 reconciliation bill. The rule also includes proposals that are beyond what the statute requires, such as new limits on certain targeted fee-for-service payments and other SDP service types, as well as new limitations on SDP design. The AHA said that CMS’ projection of a $510.1 billion reduction in payments over 10 years well exceeds the Congressional Budget Office’s estimate of $149.4 billion over 10 years, and would greatly reduce access to care, exacerbate workforce challenges, and impact hospital and health system financial viability if proposed changes in the rule are enacted. The AHA urged CMS to rescind proposals that exceed statutory requirements and to lessen the financial impact of the reduction of SDPs to Medicare levels.

AMA: Prior authorization reform is on the march. Next stop: House floor

JULY 21, 2026 – “Quick-moving legislation to reform prior authorization—adopted today by the House Energy and Commerce Committee—shows that this idea has bipartisan support and political legs. The Ways and Means Committee last week supported the Improving Seniors’ Timely Access to Care Act of 2026, and the Energy and Commerce panel tucked it into another bill and then overwhelmingly passed it. For too long, Medicare Advantage plans have misused prior authorization to delay or deny medically necessary care for our patients. This legislation would bring greater transparency and accountability to the prior authorization process while reducing burdens that pull physicians away from caring for patients.

Travel scams can crop up when you’re searching online for hotels or flights. Scammers sometimes use paid ads and put their number alongside a well-known company’s name, or link to a website that only looks like it belongs to a hotel brand or airline. To avoid these scammers, scroll to the unpaid search results and check that you have the right website or contact info for the business you’re looking for. Or better yet, type the company’s website directly into the browser, if you know it.

An Evening of Hope Celebrating 25 Years of Compassion and Saving Lives

For 25 years, A Safe Haven for Newborns has stood as a beacon of hope for mothers in crisis and a lifeline for vulnerable newborns. What began as Nick’s deeply personal journey to heal a broken heart and honor the memory of his beloved wife, Gloria, following her tragic passing, has grown into an internationally recognized organization dedicated to preventing infant abandonment and providing support, counseling, and critical resources to women facing the overwhelming reality of an unplanned pregnancy. From its beginnings, the mission has been rooted in compassion, dignity, and love — offering hope, protection, and a path forward during life’s most difficult moments.

Over the past quarter century, countless lives have been touched through the organization’s unwavering commitment to offering safe, legal, and anonymous options for mothers seeking help. Through advocacy, education, community partnerships, and around-the-clock support, A Safe Haven for Newborns has continued to remind women that they are never alone. To date, 441 newborns have been given a chance at life — 431 in Florida; nine in other states, and one in Honduras.

This milestone anniversary is more than a celebration of years — it is a celebration of lives, second chances, and the power of compassion to change the future. We invite you to join us in celebrating our Silver Jubilee by visiting our website and selecting a sponsorship opportunity. Or, contact Nick Silverio at safehaven@asafehavenfornewborns.com; 305-882-1304 x103 for more information.

Florida Blue: Watch the temperature: Summer heat is more dangerous than you think

July 21, 2026 – Summer is expected to be hotter than usual in Florida this year – and this may put your health more at risk than you think.

According to the National Weather Service, there is 40-50 percent chance Florida temperatures will be higher than average this summer, thanks in part to the El Niño weather pattern that could boost already high temperatures.

Higher temperatures are a major health risk for people with chronic conditions, older adults, those who work outdoors, and people who take certain medications that affect heat tolerance.
