ORGAN TRANSPLANTS REACHED RECORD LEVELS AT CLEVELAND CLINIC IN 2023, SAVING MORE LIVES USING TEAMWORK AND INNOVATION
February 14, 2024 – Cleveland Clinic performed 1,232 organ transplants in 2023 – including heart, intestine, kidney, liver, lung, and pancreas transplants from deceased donors – as well as living donor transplantation for kidney and liver. That is up 17% from the number of organ transplants performed at Cleveland Clinic in 2022.
“We are grateful for organ donors and their families who make the gift of life possible for our patients,” said Charles Miller, M.D., Cleveland Clinic’s enterprise director of transplantation. “Our teams work collaboratively to honor that gift and save more lives.”
Cleveland Clinic’s transplant sites are located at its main campus in Cleveland, Ohio; Weston Hospital in Florida; and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
With innovative approaches and teamwork, Cleveland Clinic’s global transplant programs continue to grow to save more lives.
-The liver transplant programs in Ohio and Florida use new technology to preserve and assess donor organs before transplantation. -Normothermic machine perfusion preserves the donor organ in a warm, oxygen-and nutrient-rich environment. As a result of using this organ preservation technology, more donated organs can be assessed and safely preserved, resulting in more usable organs and less time waiting to receive a lifesaving transplant.
-Cleveland Clinic’s Organ Repair Centers in Ohio and Florida perfuse some of the donated organs so they can undergo viability assessment prior to transplantation. -Living donation makes more transplants possible at Cleveland Clinic’s global transplant programs.

SPOTLIGHT ON EARLY DETECTION OF 3 HEART DISEASES USING ECG-AI
ROCHESTER, Minn. February 22, 2024 — Too often, the first sign of cardiovascular disease may be a major event like a heart attack, stroke or cardiac arrest. Now, researchers and clinicians at Mayo Clinic are using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to flag heart problems earlier, boosting the abilities of a diagnostic test that has been around for over a century — the electrocardiogram (ECG).
Early detection of heart disease can make a significant difference in a patient’s quality of life and longevity, but a lack of defining symptoms adds complexity. The AI-enabled ECG provides a way to potentially detect heart disease earlier and track disease progression using a test that is relatively inexpensive, readily available and often already part of a patient’s electronic health record.
Mayo Clinic has developed ECG-AI algorithms that are currently used in research to predict a patient’s likelihood of having heart conditions like atrial fibrillation, amyloidosis, aortic stenosis, low ejection fraction, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and more. The AI can also predict a patient’s biological age using traditional 12-lead and single-lead ECGs from smartwatches and portable devices. One standout application is the use of ECG-AI to detect low ejection fraction, commonly called a weak heart pump. The 12-lead algorithm for detecting this condition is cleared for clinical use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and licensed to Anumana. A single-lead algorithm for handheld devices externally applied to the chest is licensed to Eko Health for commercial development.

AHCA/NCAL, NAACOS RELEASE RECOMMENDATIONS TO ENHANCE LTC PROVIDERS’ ROLE IN VALUE-BASED CARE
White Paper Focuses on Greater Participation in Accountable Care Organizations
WASHINGTON – February 21. 2024- The American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) and the National Association of ACOs (NAACOS) today jointly released a set of recommendations that were recently shared with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that, if implemented, would increase the participation of long term and post-acute care (LTPAC) providers in accountable care organizations (ACOs).
Fewer than 2,000 skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) participate in ACOs, representing less than 10 percent of SNFs nationwide, and nearly 70 percent of ACOs have no SNF participation. LTPAC providers face myriad challenges participating in CMS value-based care models, including ACOs, despite targeted partnerships’ ability to produce significant cost savings and care improvements. Current program policies in ACO models do not align well with LTPAC providers, including those that determine which patients ACOs are accountable for, setting financial benchmarks, and quality measures. But as one of the highest-cost and most complex patient populations, LTPAC presents a significant opportunity for improved resident outcomes and reduced costs to the Medicare program.

NIH STUDY OFFERS NEW CLUES INTO THE CAUSES OF POST-INFECTIOUS ME/CFS
In-depth study finds brain, immune, and metabolic abnormalities linked to debilitating chronic disease.
February 21, 2024 – In a detailed clinical study, researchers at the National Institutes of Health have found differences in the brains and immune systems of people with post-infectious myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (PI-ME/CFS). They also found distinct differences between men and women with the disease. The findings were published in Nature Communications.
“People with ME/CFS have very real and disabling symptoms, but uncovering their biological basis has been extremely difficult,” said Walter Koroshetz, M.D., director of NIH’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). “This in-depth study of a small group of people found a number of factors that likely contribute to their ME/CFS. Now researchers can test whether these findings apply to a larger patient group and move towards identifying treatments that target core drivers of the disease.”
A team of multidisciplinary researchers discovered how feelings of fatigue are processed in the brains of people with ME/CFS. Results from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) brain scans showed that people with ME/CFS had lower activity in a brain region called the temporal-parietal junction (TPJ), which may cause fatigue by disrupting the way the brain decides how to exert effort.

WOMEN MAY REALIZE HEALTH BENEFITS OF REGULAR EXERCISE MORE THAN MEN
February 21, 2024- An NIH-supported observational study finds that even when women and men get the same amount of physical activity, the risk of premature death is lower for women.
For all the health benefits of exercise for both groups, however, only 33% of women and 43% of men in the study met the standard for weekly aerobic exercise, while 20% of women and 28% of men completed a weekly strength training session.
“Even a limited amount of regular exercise can provide a major benefit, and it turns out this is especially true for women,” said Cheng. “Taking some regular time out for exercise, even if it’s just 20-30 minutes of vigorous exercise a few times each week, can offer a lot more gain than they may realize.”

LONG-ACTING HIV TREATMENT DEMONSTRATES EFFICACY IN PEOPLE WITH CHALLENGES TAKING DAILY MEDICINE AS PRESCRIBED
Transmission electron micrograph of HIV-1 virus particles (orange) replicating from the plasma membrane of an infected H9 T cell.NIAID
February 21, 2024 – Long-acting antiretroviral therapy (ART) with cabotegravir and rilpivirine was superior in suppressing HIV replication compared to daily oral ART in people who had been unable to maintain viral suppression through an oral daily regimen, according to interim data from a randomized trial. Upon review of these findings, an independent Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) recommended halting randomization and inviting all eligible study participants to take long-acting ART. The study is sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, in collaboration with the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, ViiV Healthcare and ACTG, a global NIH-funded clinical trials network that designed and implemented the study. NIH accepted the DSMB’s recommendation.

NIH LAUNCHES RESEARCH NETWORK TO EVALUATE EMERGING CANCER SCREENING TECHNOLOGIES
Clinical trials will assess multi-cancer detection tests, among others.
February 21, 2024 – The National Institutes of Health has launched a clinical trials network to evaluate emerging technologies for cancer screening. The Cancer Screening Research Network (CSRN) will support the Biden-Harris administration’s Cancer Moonshot℠ by investigating how to identify cancers earlier, when they may be easier to treat. Eight groups have received funding from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of NIH, to carry out the initial activities of the network.
“There are many cancers we still cannot reliably detect until it is so late that they become extremely difficult to treat,” said W. Kimryn Rathmell, M.D., Ph.D., director of NCI. “Emerging technologies such as multi-cancer detection tests could transform cancer screening and help to extend the lives of many more people. We need to be sure that these technologies work and understand how to use them so they benefit everyone.”

SCIENTISTS DEVELOP A SIMPLE BLOOD TEST TO QUICKLY DIAGNOSE SARCOIDOSIS
February 22, 2024 – A research project supported by the National Institutes of Health has developed a tool to rapidly and inexpensively diagnose sarcoidosis, a chronic inflammatory disease marked by the growth of tiny lumps called granulomas in the lungs and other organs in the body. The tool, which uses a simple blood test, could allow for selective use of more invasive diagnostic tests often used to identify the disease. The findings published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
“Currently, diagnosing sarcoidosis isn’t a straightforward process, and requires tissue removal and testing with additional screenings to rule out other diseases, such as tuberculosis or lung cancer,” said James Kiley, Ph.D., Director of the Division of Lung Diseases at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, part of NIH. “Using a blood test will help diagnose faster, particularly in those organs that are more challenging to biopsy and with less harm to the patient.”
