Tampa General Hospital Adds Organ Donation Registration to MyChart – a First for Florida Residents

The enhancement comes as more than 100,000 people in the United States wait for a lifesaving organ transplant.

Aug. 22, 2025 — Tampa General Hospital (TGH), home to the TGH Transplant Institute, the No. 1 transplant institute in the nation by volume, is proud to announce a new MyChart feature that allows patients to register as organ, eye and tissue donors — marking a first for Florida residents. The enhancement simplifies the donor registration process for TGH patients, expanding access to lifesaving generosity. With just a few clicks, patients can make a deeply personal choice that could impact lives across the country.

MyChart is a secure, online portal and mobile app that allows TGH and USF Health patients to manage their health care information and communicate with their health care providers.

“Signing up through MyChart allows a patient to register in the National Donate Life Registry, creating a new pathway to help save lives and ensure that an individual’s donor registration travels with them. Registrants can choose to donate for transplant, research or educational purposes, and their decision remains private from clinical teams,” said David Fleming, president and CEO of Donate Life America. “Existing MyChart data also helps streamline the registration experience, thanks to Epic, TGH’s electronic health record provider and creator of MyChart.”

New Cleveland Clinic Research Identifies Link Between Gut Microbes and an Elevated Risk for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms

Results could lead to improved monitoring and new therapies or interventions designed to prevent ruptures

August 20, 2025 – Cleveland Clinic researchers have discovered a connection between elevated blood levels of TMAO (trimethylamine N-oxide) — a byproduct of gut bacteria digestion of nutrients found in red meat and other animal products — and a higher risk of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

The findings, published today in JAMA Cardiology, suggest that TMAO may play a role in the development, progression, and severity of this life-threatening condition, including faster rates of aneurysm expansion and greater risk for needing surgery.

Mississippi Infant Mortality Emergency Underscores US Health Crisis

On August 21, 2025, the Mississippi State Department of Health declared a public health emergency after reporting an alarming rise in infant mortality, on top of already leading the nation in infant death rates. March of Dimes, the nation’s leading nonprofit fighting for the health of moms and babies, issued the following response from President and CEO, Cindy Rahman:

“The Mississippi Department of Health’s declaration of a public health emergency in response to infant mortality is a painful reminder of the maternal and infant health crisis facing our nation. In 2024, Mississippi’s infant mortality rate was 9.7 deaths per 1,000 live births, the highest of any state and substantially higher than the provisional US rate of 5.5 in 2024. The burden falls especially hard on babies born to Black moms, who experienced an infant mortality rate of 15.2—a nearly 24% increase from the previous year, while the rate among babies born to white moms declined.

NuGen Medical Devices Announces New Needle-Free Injection System Featuring Internal Cartridge Technology

August 21, 2025 – NuGen Medical Devices Inc. (TSXV: NGMD) (“NuGen” or the “Company“), a leader in needle-free subcutaneous drug-delivery technology, is pleased to announce research and development of a next-generation needle-free injection system, in drug delivery technology. This innovation, protected under international patent WO2021206553 (granted in the EU and China; pending in Canada and the US), introduces a cartridge-based solution that simplifies drug administration and enhances patient safety.

At the heart of this breakthrough is the integration of a sterile internal insulin cartridge into NuGen’s proprietary needle-free autoinjector, an innovation conceived by Nicky Canton, the inventor behind the patent. Unlike current systems such as InsuJet, which require external connectors to manually draw insulin into a temporary reservoir, this new design eliminates that step entirely. The result is a safer, more intuitive experience for patients, with reduced risk of dosing errors and contamination.

CMS Launches Nationwide Push to Remove Ineligible Medicaid Enrollees, Uphold Citizenship Requirements

New Verification Process to Help States Maintain Program Integrity, Protect Taxpayer Funding

August 19, 2025 – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) today launched an oversight initiative to ensure that enrollees in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) are U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or have a satisfactory immigration status. CMS will begin providing states with monthly enrollment reports identifying individuals whose citizenship or immigration status could not be confirmed through federal databases, including the Department of Homeland Security’s Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program.

States are responsible for reviewing cases, verifying the citizenship or immigration status of identified individuals, requesting additional documentation if needed, and taking appropriate actions when necessary, including adjusting coverage or enforcing non-citizen eligibility rules. CMS is sending the first set of reports to states today, with all states receiving a report over the course of a month. We expect states to take quick action and will monitor progress on a monthly basis.

FNIH Awards 2025 Paul-Gallin Trailblazer Prize for Physician-Scientists to Matthew Greenblatt, MD, PhD

August 21, 2025 – The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) will award the 2025 Paul-Gallin Trailblazer Prize for Physician-Scientists to Matthew Greenblatt, MD, PhD, of Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Greenblatt and his team have discovered three distinct stem cell types involved in bone formation, revealing potential therapeutic targets for osteoporosis, rare genetic disorders of the bone, and cancer metastases.

“Dr. Greenblatt’s work epitomizes the critical role of physician-scientists in turning basic science discoveries into therapies for patients and embodies the spirit of the Paul-Gallin Trailblazer Prize,” said Steven Paul, MD, Chair of the FNIH Board of Directors. “His pioneering research has reshaped our understanding of the stem cells and cell lineages that form bone, showing them to be more diverse and specialized than previously believed. He and his team have also demonstrated that these novel discoveries about bone development are useful in developing new treatments for diseases involving bone.”

Phantom limb study rewires our understanding of the brain

NIH scientists and collaborators reveal the brain preserves its representation of lost limb in clinical study.

AUGUST 21, 2025 – In a first-of-its-kind study, researchers found that the brain’s control center for a lost appendage can persist long after surgical amputation, which stands in stark contrast to longstanding theories about the brain’s ability to reorganize itself, also known as plasticity. Scientists from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and their colleagues examined human brain activity before and after arm amputation and found that the loss of a limb does not prompt a large-scale cerebral overhaul. Published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, this study offers new insight into the mysterious phantom limb syndrome and could help guide the development of neuroprosthetics and pain treatments for people with limb loss.

A team of scientists from NIH and University College London acted on a unique window of opportunity, running MRI scans on three participants in the months prior to a planned amputation (performed for separate medical purposes) and then up to five years after.
