ANURAG AGARWAL, M.D., JOINS BAPTIST HEALTH AS RADIATION ONCOLOGIST

BOCA RATON, FL – January 10, 2024 – Anurag Agarwal, M.D., double board-certified in radiation oncology and internal medicine, recently joined The Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, at Boca Raton Regional Hospital.

Dr. Agarwal utilizes a wide spectrum of radiation therapies to treat all cancers and specializes in treating breast, prostate, lung and brain tumors as well as soft-tissue sarcomas. He excels in advanced methods of stereotactic radiosurgery — the precise use of radiation beams to target tumors. He holds certifications in surgical and minimally invasive radiation interventions, including proton beam therapy, Gamma Knife and CyberKnife.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Agarwal to Lynn Cancer Institute,” said Louise Morrell, M.D., medical director at Lynn Cancer Institute. “Our patients will benefit from his expertise and approach — he applies the newest testing technologies with a unique, evidenced-based plan to best serve his patients.”

Dr. Agarwal’s approach includes the developing branch of theranostics, which uses radioactive isotopes to help diagnose and treat certain cancers. He regularly incorporates genomic testing into his practice and uses advanced imaging and other tests to create personalized treatment plans for patients.

LEADING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY, WORLD CLASS FACILITY POSITION MEMORIAL TO BETTER SERVE THE CANCER COMMUNITY

BY: Ignacio Castellon, MD

January 10, 2024  – The use of radiation as a treatment option for the many forms of cancer has been described as a “tool in the toolbox.” If that’s so, Memorial Healthcare System has significantly upgraded both its tools and toolbox with the completion of the $125 million, 125,000 square foot Memorial Cancer Institute on the campus of Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines.

RADIATION ONCOLOGY
doctor talking to patient lying on radiology system
Radiation has traditionally been used in 50-60% of cancer cases, either by itself or in combination with chemotherapy, surgery, immunotherapy, and other medications. We make decisions on usage based on the type of cancer the patient has been diagnosed with, its molecular profile, and how far the disease has advanced. It has been a critical piece of the treatment regimen for many years and recent advancements have enabled radiation oncologists to be more precise with its use, treating smaller areas with lower doses to normal tissues.

The results have been a game-changer for many patients, allowing them to resume their former lives with all the functionality they previously had.

RESEARCH SHOWS DEADLY BRAIN CANCER CAN MIMIC HEALTHY NEURONS

Antonio Iavarone, MD

Study by Sylvester Cancer, collaborators provides insight into glioblastoma, potential therapies to combat treatment resistance

MIAMI, FLORIDA  –  January  11, 2024 – Certain cancers are more difficult to treat because they contain cells that are highly skilled at evading drugs or our immune systems by disguising themselves as healthy cells.

Glioblastoma, for example, an incurable brain cancer, is characterized by cells that can mimic human neurons, even growing axons and making active connections with healthy brain neurons. This cancer is usually deadly – average survival time is just over one year from diagnosis – because it almost always recurs after initial treatment and recurrent tumors are always resistant to therapy.
