FIRST CARDIAC ABLATION PROCEDURE IN THE STATE AND AMONG THE FIRST IN THE NATION PERFORMED AT HCA FLORIDA MERCY HOSPITAL UTILIZING NEW FDA-APPROVED PULSED FIELD ABLATION SYSTEM
New system designed to provide pulsed field ablation therapy to treat patients with atrial fibrillation
February 15, 2024 – HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, a 488-bed facility, and part of HCA Florida Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in Florida, was the site of The first cardiac ablation procedure in the state and among the first in the nation using the FARAPULSE™ Pulsed Field Ablation System. A pulsed field ablation, or PFA, is a minimally-invasive intervention for treating patients suffering from atrial fibrillation, or AFib. Today’s procedure marks the wider availability of PFA with Boston Scientific’s
entry, already FDA approved.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Jose Osorio, the medical director of cardiac electrophysiology at HCA Florida Miami Electrophysiology. Internationally recognized in the field of electrophysiology, Dr. Jose Osorio has participated as a lead researcher in several clinical research trials conducted in the United States examining breakthrough technologies in the treatment of AFib, the most common type of heart rhythm disorder. AFib causes a variety of symptoms including fast or chaotic heartbeat, fatigue, shortness of breath and chest pain and increases a person’s risk of stroke. Ablation is one of several procedural and medical interventions used to control AFib symptoms and reduce stroke risk.
In treating AFib, pulsed field ablation utilizes a controlled electric field to selectively ablate cardiac tissue that is causing irregular heartbeats. This new treatment method has been shown to minimize the risk of damage to surrounding tissues. This is because pulsed field ablation disables cardiac cells using electricity rather than extreme temperatures used in the traditional approaches. Further, the technology allows ablation procedures to be performed in less time.

TENTH ANNUAL MAYOR’S BALL SET FOR SATURDAY, APRIL 6TH
Event Will Shine a Light on Homeless Veterans
PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL. – February 14, 2024 – On any given night, more than 1,855 people in Palm Beach County do not have a safe, permanent place to call home. It is a devastating reality for so many and one that is in stark contrast to the view that is seen when thinking of Palm Beach County.
Working to reduce that number is The Homeless Coalition of Palm Beach County, a nonprofit created nearly 30 years ago to generate awareness through advocacy, education, and community outreach, and funding to close gaps in services through collaborative efforts.
Each year, the organization hosts its most significant fundraising event, The Mayor’s Ball, bringing together community leaders, philanthropists and changemakers to raise crucial funding to support collective efforts to end homelessness. The 2024 event will kick off at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 6th at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. The black-tie gala promises an evening filled with excitement and festivity starting with cocktails and followed by dinner and dancing.
“We are very much looking forward to hosting the 10th Annual Mayor’s Ball,” shared CEO of The Homeless Coalition, Dr. Tomara Mays. “This year, our focus will be on recognizing homeless veterans. Homeless veterans are a special group of individuals who gave so selflessly but have since struggled to overcome what they experienced during their service to our country. Riddled with mental and sometimes physical illness, they truly need our support. This year, we will honor and pay tribute to these men and women.”
While the event focuses on recognizing homeless veterans, there are so many others who are experiencing the same challenges. Children, teens, adults, even entire families, can all be at risk of homelessness. In fact, during the 2022- 2023 school year, the School District of Palm Beach County identified nearly 5,000 children as homeless and The Homeless Coalitions’ Project Homeless Connect program helped 400 individuals.

COVID-19 VACCINATION AND BOOSTING DURING PREGNANCY PROTECTS INFANTS FOR SIX MONTHS
Transmission electron micrograph of SARS-CoV-2 virus particles (colorized green), isolated from a patient sample.NIAID
February 14, 2024 – Women who receive an mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccination or booster during pregnancy can provide their infants with strong protection against symptomatic COVID-19 infection for at least six months after birth, according to a study from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health. These findings, published in Pediatrics(link is external), reinforce the importance of receiving both a COVID-19 vaccine and booster during pregnancy to ensure that infants are born with robust protection that lasts until they are old enough to be vaccinated.
COVID-19 is especially dangerous for newborns and young infants, and even healthy infants are vulnerable to COVID-19 and are at risk for severe disease. No COVID-19 vaccines currently are available for infants under six months old. Earlier results from the Multisite Observational Maternal and Infant COVID-19 Vaccine (MOMIv-Vax) study revealed that when pregnant volunteers received both doses of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, antibodies induced by the vaccine could be found in their newborns’ cord blood. This suggested that the infants likely had some protection against COVID-19 when they were still too young to receive a vaccine. However, researchers at the NIAID-funded Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Consortium (IDCRC), which conducted the study, did not know how long these antibody levels would last or how well the infants would actually be protected. The research team hoped to gather this information by following the infants through their first six months of life.
