SUNSCREEN IS YOUR BEST FRIEND THIS SUMMER
Sylvester Cancer Experts Available to Discuss Sunscreen and Skin Care
MIAMI, Fla. June 20, 2024 – Feels good to soak up some rays by the beach or pool, but your skin can absorb harmful ultraviolet rays that can cause cancer. The United States lacks advanced formula sunscreens found in Europe and other countries, but experts at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Health System, advocate more use of the products we have. It’s especially relevant in Florida, the sunshine state, which has the nation’s second highest cancer burden, according to health officials, and record heat drives people to pools and beaches. Today is the first day of summer.
Robert S. Kirsner, M.D., says Americans have less choices in sunscreen compared to other countries. He is a dermatologist at Sylvester and Chair and Harvey Blank Professor at Dr. Phillip Frost Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery at the university.
“We’d really like to get some of the European sunscreens to the United States. It will give us more and better options for our patients,” Kirsner said.
He added:
About one in five Americans will contract skin cancer. U.S. sunscreen formulas are safe and effective, if used properly.
Apply sunscreen thick, about the width of a dime, before going in the sun.

| CLEVELAND CLINIC STUDY SHOWS WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY CUTS RISK OF HEART COMPLICATIONS AND DEATH IN PATIENTS WITH OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA AND OBESITY
First-of-its-kind MOSAIC study shows weight-loss surgery is associated with a 42% reduction in risk of heart complications and 37% reduction in risk of death in patients with obstructive sleep apnea
June 21, 2024 – A Cleveland Clinic study shows that bariatric surgery performed in patients with obesity and moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea is associated with a significantly lower risk of death and major adverse cardiovascular events, compared with patients who did not have the surgery. This study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Ali Aminian, M.D., director of Cleveland Clinic’s Bariatric & Metabolic Institute and primary investigator of the MOSAIC study, said, “The research shows that weight loss achieved with bariatric surgery is significantly associated with a 42% lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events and 37% lower risk of death in patients with obesity and moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.”
According to a study published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, nearly 1 billion adults around the world have obstructive sleep apnea. One of the most common risk factors for developing the sleep disorder is obesity. The Obesity Medicine Association reports that about 70% of adult patients with obstructive sleep apnea have obesity.

MORE THAN 13,000 TRANSPLANTS COMPLETED AS TAMPA GENERAL MARKS 50 YEARS OF ITS NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED TRANSPLANT INSTITUTE
The high-volume transplant center achieves better outcomes for patients and more lives saved.
Tampa, FL. June 20, 2024 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH), the region’s only academic health system, this week celebrates 50 years of the transplant program, giving life to patients throughout the region and across the nation.
On June 18, 1974, Tampa General performed its first kidney transplant. In the five decades since Tampa General completed its first transplant surgery, surgeons at the academic health system have been providing patients with the most advanced, comprehensive, compassionate and personalized care possible. Tampa General has celebrated many historic milestones and national accolades for the program, becoming one of the leading transplant centers in the nation.
“The 50th anniversary is remarkable on its own, but consider the more than 13,000 lives saved by Tampa General’s Transplant Institute over the last five decades,” said John Couris, president and chief executive officer at Tampa General Hospital. “This anniversary is a tribute to the providers and their commitment to exceptional care. In the last few years, we’ve made tremendous progress in recruiting the best-in-class surgeons, adopting new technologies and advancing innovative techniques, and today, we’re one of the nation’s leading transplant centers. We’re building on the first 50 years to ensure the next are even better.”
To date, Tampa General has performed more than 13,000 transplant surgeries, a milestone achieved by only a few dozen hospitals nationwide. In 2023, Tampa General was ranked among the top five hospitals in the nation for transplants by volume, with 756 performed last year.

SYLVESTER CANCER TIP SHEET FOR JUNE, 2024
JUNE 2024 TIP SHEET: A hematology chief endorses FDA approval of a new cancer drug, new research reveals a promising new use for an older drug, a multiple myeloma expert highlights the field’s rapidly evolving treatment landscape while his research may secure FDA approval of a new clinical endpoint, a bilingual thoracic oncologist is recognized for breaking down language barriers for cancer patients and caregivers, and more are in this month’s tip sheet from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. For more information on any of these story ideas or to arrange an interview, please email, sandy.van@miami.edu, or call/text 808.206.4576. Thank you.
BLOOD CANCER
SYLVESTER EXPERT ENDORSES FDA’S RECENT CANCER DRUG APPROVAL
Mikkael Sekeres, M.D., chief of the Division of Hematology at Sylvester, who specializes in treating leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), expressed his support for the Food and Drug Administration’s recent approval of the drug imetelstat. The drug, a telomerase inhibitor, treats cancer-related anemia in patients with lower-risk MDS. “With approval of imetelstat to treat myelodysplastic syndromes, we finally have another approach we can offer to patients with profound and debilitating anemia from their cancer,” Sekeres said.
STUDY MAY LEAD TO MORE PATIENTS RECEIVING STEM-CELL TRANSPLANTS
A new use for an older drug may enable more patients with high-risk blood cancers to receive transplanted stem cells from unrelated, partially matched donors, according to new research from Sylvester. The repurposed drug, cyclophosphamide, could help expand the donor pool, especially for underrepresented racial and ethnic groups who often struggle to find fully matched donors. Antonio Jimenez Jimenez, M.D., Sylvester’s primary investigator for the cyclophosphamide studies, called the findings “transformational.”
Recent FDA Committee Vote Could Speed Multiple Myeloma Drug Approval
An FDA Committee voted in April to approve minimal residual disease (MRD) as a clinical endpoint when evaluating drugs for multiple myeloma. The unanimous vote was based primarily on Sylvester-led research spearheaded by C. Ola Landgren, M.D., Ph.D., director of its Myeloma Research Institute. His study, published May 20 in the journal Blood, shows “a very tight correlation between MRD and clinical outcomes both in newly diagnosed and relapsed patients,” he explained. If the FDA adopts the committee’s recommendations, which it usually does, the result will be a special, accelerated pathway for drug approval based on MRD.

HHS OFFICE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS SECURES COMMITMENT WITH PUERTO RICAN CHILD WELFARE AGENCY TO IMPLEMENT ACTIONS TO ENSURE EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES
Commitment ensures effective communication for deaf and hard of hearing individuals when they receive or participate in critical social and human services and programs
JUNE 21, 2024 – Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced actions taken by the Puerto Rico Department of the Family’s Administration for Families and Children (the Department of the Family) to improve communication for, and with, deaf parents prior to removing their minor children from their homes under various Federal civil rights laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability. The complaints alleged that the Department of the Family had failed to provide sign language interpreters to deaf parents during the agency’s investigation and removal of their minor children. The Department of the Family has committed to implementing numerous corrective actions relating to its provision of auxiliary aids and services. As part of finalizing this agreement, OCR Director Melanie Fontes Rainer met with Puerto Rico Family Secretary Cieni Rodriguez Troche today in San Juan, Puerto Rico. They discussed the measures that the Department of the Family has taken to strengthen its existing communication policies and procedures and areas for future work and collaboration.
“Children rely on their parents and caregivers for support and parental guidance, and the government must ensure this is true even when investigating family issues. That’s why it is critical to ensure that prior to removal of children from their families, appropriate communication tools must be used to ensure that those parents who are deaf or hard of hearing are fairly given the ability to understand what is happening with their children, communicate with their children, and ensure the safety and wellbeing of their children. Removal of children without providing parents appropriate communication can never happen again.” said OCR Director Melanie Fontes Rainer. “We applaud the commitment to take corrective steps by the Department of the Family to ensure that deaf or hard of hearing parents don’t lose their basic rights to parent their children because of a disability.”

SCIENTISTS IDENTIFY GENES LINKED TO BRAIN CELL LOSS IN ALS
Genetic map of the ALS risk gene SOD1 in a sample of human brain tissue. Researchers discovered higher levels of gene expression (light green and blue) in a rare type of neuron found deep in the brain’s cortex.Eggan lab, Harvard University.
June 21, 2024 – In a small study, researchers have discovered how a set of genes could cause neurons to die in sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The results, published in Nature Aging(link is external), provide insight into the root causes of ALS and may lead to new ways to halt disease progression. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
ALS is a progressive neurological disorder that attacks motor neurons, nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control muscles, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and eventually death. Most cases of ALS are sporadic and occur in people without a family history or other clear risk factors.
