State of the Clinic: Cleveland Clinic Meets Healthcare Challenges with Innovative Solutions
In annual address, CEO and President Tom Mihaljevic, M.D., reports nearly 16 million patient encounters, $18 billion in operating revenue in 2025
January 26, 2026- As healthcare struggles with caregiver shortages, limited access and the pressure to provide better care to more patients at a lower cost, through intentional effort, Cleveland Clinic is meeting these challenges by implementing innovative solutions and a renewed set of guiding values, Cleveland Clinic CEO and President Tom Mihaljevic, M.D., said during today’s annual State of the Clinic address.

In 2025, Cleveland Clinic completed nearly 16 million patient encounters and generated $18 billion in operating revenue, with an operating margin exceeding 4%.
The State of the Clinic presentation emphasized Cleveland Clinic’s continued commitment to caring for patients, caregivers, communities and the organization, while also reviewing the organization’s 2025 highlights, digital transformation efforts, enterprise strategy and growth, and research, innovation and education.

HCA Healthcare Reports Fourth Quarter 2025 Results and Provides 2026 Guidance
NASHVILLE, Tenn.- JANUARY 27, 2026 – HCA Healthcare, Inc. (NYSE: HCA) today announced financial and operating results for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2025.
Key fourth quarter metrics (all percentage changes compare 4Q 2025 to 4Q 2024 unless otherwise noted):
-Revenues increased 6.7 percent to $19.513 billion
-Net income attributable to HCA Healthcare, Inc. increased 30.6 percent to $1.878 billion
-Diluted earnings per share increased 44.6 percent to $8.14 per share, and diluted earnings per share, as adjusted, increased 28.8 percent to $8.01 per share
-Adjusted EBITDA increased 10.8 percent to $4.114 billion
-Cash flows from operating activities totaled $2.359 billion, compared to $2.559 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024
-Same facility admissions increased 2.4 percent and same facility equivalent admissions increased 2.5 percent
“We finished 2025 with strong performance consistent with previous quarters. Our investments in network expansion, workforce development, and advancing clinical capabilities further strengthened the HCA Healthcare system. I want to thank our colleagues for their outstanding work, their dedication to our patients, and their unyielding commitment to our mission,” said Sam Hazen, Chief Executive Officer of HCA Healthcare.
Revenues in the fourth quarter of 2025 totaled $19.513 billion, compared to $18.285 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024. Net income attributable to HCA Healthcare, Inc. totaled $1.878 billion, or $8.14 per diluted share, compared to $1.438 billion, or $5.63 per diluted share, in the fourth quarter of 2024. Results for the fourth quarter of 2025 include gains on sales of facilities of $41 million, or $0.13 per diluted share, primarily related to the sale of a hospital facility in Indiana. Results for the fourth quarter of 2024 included losses on sales of facilities of $195 million, or $0.59 per diluted share, primarily related to the pending sale of a hospital facility in California, which was completed in the second quarter of 2025.

Health Foundation Receives Second $500,000 Charitable Gift Annuity from Grateful Patient Didier Moritz
A Charitable Gift Annuity benefits both a nonprofit and the donor
January 27, 2026 – Holy Cross Health Foundation is honored to share that grateful patient and donor Didier Moritz has made a second $500,000 donation to Holy Cross Health Foundation in the form of a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA).
A CGA is a planned giving option that provides donors with guaranteed lifetime income while supporting causes they care about. After the donor’s passing, the remaining funds from the annuity directly benefit Holy Cross Health Foundation’s mission.

Broward Health North Hosts Fifth-Grade Students for Hospital Tour
January 26, 2026- Broward Health North recently welcomed 18 fifth-grade students from Christian Life Academy in Tamarac for an immersive behind-the-scenes hospital tour.
The students visited the operating room, where they wore bunny suits and geared up as if preparing for surgery. They also saw the hospital’s latest MAKO robotic technology, toured radiology, learned from BSO Fire Rescue during an ambulance presentation, and watched demonstrations of imaging and medical technology used throughout the hospital.

Study links salty drinking water to higher blood pressure, especially in coastal areas

Jan. 26, 2026 — Salt is usually something people are warned to limit in food, not drinking water. But a global analysis suggests sodium in tap water may be an overlooked contributor to high blood pressure, particularly in coastal regions.
The study, published in BMJ Global Health, found that higher salinity in drinking water was associated with higher blood pressure and an increased risk of hypertension.
The research was led by Florida International University scientists, including Rajiv Chowdhury, chair of the Department of Global Health at FIU’s Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work, with collaborators from Johns Hopkins University, Vanderbilt University, and the Pan American Health Organization.
Researchers analyzed data from 27 population-based studies involving more than 74,000 participants in the United States, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Kenya, Australia, Israel, and several European countries.
Blood pressure is commonly measured using an inflatable cuff placed around the upper arm. As the cuff tightens and gradually releases, a monitor records the force of blood pushing against artery walls. Results are expressed as systolic pressure over diastolic pressure, such as 120/80 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg).
People exposed to higher salinity in drinking water had higher average blood pressure than those exposed to lower salinity. Systolic blood pressure – the top number in a reading – was about 3.2 mm Hg higher, while diastolic blood pressure – the bottom number – was nearly 2.8 mm Hg higher.

FAU Becomes State’s First University to Host Onsite Quantum Computer
January 27, 2026 – Florida Atlantic University will be the first university in Florida to publicly host a large, dedicated quantum computer on site. Today, FAU signed an agreement with D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS), to acquire and install an Advantage2 annealing quantum computer on the university’s Boca Raton campus, aiming to accelerate and solidify the state of Florida’s position as a leader in quantum computing.
The Advantage2 system deployment, expected later this year, will serve as the foundation of a new partnership with D-Wave, the only dual-platform quantum computing company, providing annealing and gate-model systems, software and services. Together, FAU and D-Wave aim to advance quantum computing education, research and applied innovation in Florida.
“This milestone marks a transformative moment for Florida Atlantic University and for the state of Florida,” said Piero Bussani, chair, FAU Board of Trustees. “By hosting one of the most advanced quantum computers on a university campus, FAU is not only accelerating research but also preparing our students to lead in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. CMS Proposes Rule to Strengthen Oversight of Organ Procurement Organizations and Protect Patients
JANUARY 28, 2026- The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) today announced a proposed rule to strengthen federal oversight of Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs). The proposal sharpens the framework for upcoming OPO re-certification cycles and reinforces clear, enforceable standards to protect patients and ensure every viable organ is safely recovered and transplanted.
More than 100,000 Americans are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant; every eight minutes another person is added to the transplant list, and 17 people die each day while waiting. OPOs are the critical link between donor hospitals and transplant programs, responsible for securing consent, recovering organs, and ensuring safe, timely delivery to recipients.

CMS Proposes 2027 Medicare Advantage and Part D Payment Policies to Improve Payment Accuracy and Sustainability
Statement from AHA:
“The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Jan. 26 released proposed changes to Medicare Advantage plan capitation rates and Part D payment policies for calendar year 2027, which the agency estimates will result in a net average year-over-year increase of 0.09% in MA plan payments, or $700 million. CMS proposes to address coding differences between MA and Original Medicare, in addition to updating the MA risk adjustment model to reflect current costs associated with various conditions and characteristics. The agency also proposes to exclude diagnosis information from unlinked chart review records from risk score calculation in CY 2027 and solicits feedback on new measures that would incentivize plans from providing unnecessary, inappropriate or low-value care, as well as measures related to medical errors or misdiagnoses. CMS also plans updates to the Part D risk adjustment model. Out-of-pocket prescription drug costs for individuals with Medicare Part D are proposed to be capped at $2,400 in 2027, up from $2,100 in 2026. Comments on the CY 2027 proposals are due Feb. 25. The agency expects to publish a final rate announcement on or before April 6. ”

January 26, 2026 – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the Calendar Year (CY) 2027 Advance Notice of Methodological Changes for Medicare Advantage (MA) Capitation Rates and MA and Part D Payment Policies (the CY 2027 Advance Notice). This annual release proposes routine and technical updates that ensure MA and Part D payments are accurate. If finalized, the proposed policies are projected to result in a net average year-over-year payment increase of 0.09%, or over $700 million in MA payments to plans in CY 2027. This expected increase includes consideration of the various elements that impact MA payments, such as growth rates of underlying costs, 2026 Star Ratings for 2027 quality bonus payments, and risk adjustment updates. CMS also expects that the CY 2027 Advance Notice’s proposed policies will promote even greater payment accuracy, maintain beneficiary choice, help ensure affordable coverage for Medicare beneficiaries, and enable an even more stable MA program in the long run.

Advancing Cancer Care Through Precision Medicine
Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, will host its Fourth Annual Precision Oncology Symposium on January 30-31, 2026, at Loews Coral Gables Hotel.
The one-and-a-half-day event will explore molecular and targeted therapies transforming the treatment of solid tumors, including lung, breast, brain and gastrointestinal cancers. Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the symposium offers continuing education credits for physicians and healthcare professionals.
