July 7, 2025 – Transplant surgeons at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) and USF Health have successfully performed the world’s first recorded bloodless heart-liver transplant. The groundbreaking procedure was led by Dr. Kiran Dhanireddy, vice president and chief of the TGH Transplant Institute and associate professor of surgery with the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, and Dr. Gundars Katlaps, surgical director of the lung transplant program and an associate professor of Surgery in the Morsani College of Medicine.

FIU study points the way to building mental toughness and enjoying exercise
July 8, 2025 – Struggling to start a workout routine or stick with one? New research offers a surprising insight: your brain, not your body, may be what’s holding you back. And it can be trained to help you push through.
According to FIU neuroscientist Marcelo Bigliassi, simple, controlled physical challenges can recalibrate how people perceive exertion and rewire how your brain perceives effort, making exercise feel less punishing and even enjoyable.
“Maybe you think having low tolerance for exercise is just part of your personality,” said Bigliassi, who specializes in AI-driven neuroscience and the brain-body connection. “But our data shows that’s not necessarily true. The brain can adapt and reset its limits when you give it a new point of reference or comparison.”
Bigliassi’s team recruited minimally active participants and exposed them to short, high-intensity stress tests designed to challenge both mind and body. Participants first submerged their hand in ice water for up to three minutes, followed immediately by a burst of intense cycling. Throughout the process, researchers tracked physiological responses and mood to assess changes in how participants perceived discomfort.

NCH Achieves a First with Innovative Leadless Heart Failure Treatment
July 8, 2025 – Naples Comprehensive Health (NCH) has successfully performed a groundbreaking cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) procedure using the WiSE® CRT System from EBR Systems, Inc., marking the first time the system has been implanted simultaneously with a right-sided leadless pacemaker in the US. The advanced procedure was led by Dinesh Sharma, MD, an electrophysiologist at NCH’s Rooney Heart Institute, who along with his team, completed the procedure on a long-time patient of the Rooney Heart Institute.
The patient is now one of the first in the country to receive a completely leadless biventricular pacing system, which is a combination of the Medtronic MICRA™ device and the WiSE CRT System. This breakthrough represents a major milestone in the evolution of left ventricular endocardial pacing (LVEP) for cardiac resynchronization therapy, a treatment option for patients with heart failure.
“The WiSE system is a game-changer for heart failure patients who are not candidates for traditional CRT,” said Dinesh Sharma, MD, Electrophysiologist at the NCH Rooney Heart Institute. “By enabling pacing inside the left ventricle without leads, it offers a more natural and physiological activation of the heart, significantly expanding our ability to treat patients who previously had no other options.”

Robot Performs 1st Realistic Surgery Without Human Help
System trained on videos of surgeries performs like an expert surgeon
JULY 9, 2025- A robot trained on videos of surgeries performed a lengthy phase of a gallbladder removal without human help. The robot operated for the first time on a lifelike patient, and during the operation, responded to and learned from voice commands from the team—like a novice surgeon working with a mentor.
The robot performed unflappably across trials and with the expertise of a skilled human surgeon, even during unexpected scenarios typical in real life medical emergencies.
The federally-funded work, led by Johns Hopkins University researchers, is a transformative advancement in surgical robotics, where robots can perform with both mechanical precision and human-like adaptability and understanding.
“This advancement moves us from robots that can execute specific surgical tasks to robots that truly understand surgical procedures,” said medical roboticist Axel Krieger. “This is a critical distinction that brings us significantly closer to clinically viable autonomous surgical systems that can work in the messy, unpredictable reality of actual patient care.”

MAYO: AI-enhanced echocardiography improves early detection of amyloid buildup in the heart
JULY 9, 2025 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — An artificial intelligence (AI) model developed by Mayo Clinic and Ultromics, Ltd., an AI echocardiography company based in Oxford, England, is highly accurate in screening for cardiac amyloidosis, a rare and progressive type of heart failure, according to a new study. The model is the first and only AI tool of its kind.
Researchers from Mayo Clinic and Ultromics, with investigators at the University of Chicago Medicine and collaborators around the world, validated and tested the model on a large and multiethnic patient population and compared its abilities to other diagnostic methods for cardiac amyloidosis.
Their findings, published in the European Heart Journal, show that the AI model was highly accurate, with 85% sensitivity (correctly identifying those with the disease) and 93% specificity (correctly identifying those without the disease). Using a single echocardiography videoclip, the model was effective across all major types of cardiac amyloidosis and distinguished it from other conditions with similar characteristics.
Cardiac amyloidosis is a life-threatening condition where an abnormal protein, called amyloid, builds up in the heart, causing it to stiffen and not work properly. It is often missed because the symptoms and imaging features can be similar to other heart conditions. However, early diagnosis is crucial because new drug therapies are now available that can slow or stop the disease’s progression.
This work builds on the previous experience of Mayo Clinic and Ultromics in developing an AI echocardiography model to detect heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), which received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance in 2022. HFpEF is a common type of heart failure, associated with high morbidity and mortality, but can be challenging to diagnose. An estimated 15% of patients with HFpEF have cardiac amyloidosis.

NIH to crack down on excessive publisher fees for publicly funded research
JULY 8, 2025 – As part of its ongoing commitment to scientific transparency and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) today announced plans to implement a new policy that will cap how much publishers can charge NIH-supported scientists to make their research findings publicly accessible. This initiative reflects a broader effort to restore public trust in public health by promoting open, honest, and transparent scientific communication.
“Creating an open, honest, and transparent research atmosphere is a key part of restoring public trust in public health,” said NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya. “This reform will make science accessible not only to the public but also to the broader scientific community, while ending perverse incentives that don’t benefit taxpayers.”
