STUDY: ABLATIVE STEREOTACTIC MAGNETIC RESONANCE-GUIDED ADAPTIVE RADIATION THERAPY MAY IMPROVE OVERALL SURVIVAL IN PATIENTS WITH PANCREATIC CANCER
February 15, 2024 – A study co-led by researchers at Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, found that ablative stereotactic magnetic resonance (MR)-guided adaptive radiation therapy may improve local control (LC) and overall survival (OS) in patients with borderline resectable (BRPC) and locally advanced pancreas cancer (LAPC). Long-term outcomes from the Phase 2 SMART trial demonstrate encouraging OS and limited toxicity as published recently in Radiotherapy & Oncology (“The Green Journal”).
“Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is a leading cause of cancer death. Surgery is the only known curative treatment, although most newly diagnosed patients are not surgical candidates due to locally extensive and/or distant metastatic disease,” said Michael D. Chuong, M.D., vice chair and medical director of proton therapy and photon therapy in the department of radiation oncology at Miami Cancer Institute, and senior author of the study. “Ablative radiation therapy may benefit patients with advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma by improving LC, reducing pain, and enhancing quality-of-life.”

HCA FLORIDA HIGHLANDS HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM TEAM SAVES GOAT’S LIFE
February 16, 2024 – The emergency room (ER) team at HCA Florida Highlands Hospital not only saves human lives – they recently saved a goat’s life as well. McKaylah Mann is a senior at Sebring High School and member of the local Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter. FFA students can purchase and raise a livestock animal of their choice to eventually show at the Highlands County Fair, which was recently held February 2-10. Once shown, the animals are auctioned off, typically for slaughter. This year, McKaylah chose to raise a goat, who she named Bourbon. He was purchased in September and has been a daily responsibility. Besides playing hide-n-seek, playing on his see-saw, and enjoying his snuggles while feeding him his favorite snack – strawberries – McKaylah put in a lot of time and labor to manage the finances and take care of him.
As McKaylah grew attached, so did her mom, Tabitha Mann, who is the emergency room manager at HCA Florida Highlands Hospital. “I would bring the videos to work and show the staff just to get a laugh throughout the day,” said Tabitha. While she shared updates and videos of him eating strawberries and learning new tricks, the ER team grew to love him as well.

CLEVELAND CLINIC-LED STUDY DISCOVERS LINK BETWEEN HIGH LEVELS OF NIACIN – A COMMON B VITAMIN – AND HEART DISEASE
Excess Niacin Fuels Inflammation, Cardiovascular Disease through Newly Discovered Pathway
Cleveland Clinic researchers have identified a new pathway that contributes to cardiovascular disease associated with high levels of niacin, a common B vitamin previously recommended to lower cholesterol.
The team, led by Stanley Hazen, M.D., Ph.D., discovered a link between 4PY, a breakdown product from excess niacin, and heart disease. Higher circulating levels of 4PY were strongly associated with development of heart attack, stroke and other adverse cardiac events in large-scale clinical studies. The researchers also showed in preclinical studies that 4PY directly triggers vascular inflammation which damages blood vessels and can lead to atherosclerosis over time.
The study, published in Nature Medicine, also details genetic links between 4PY and vascular inflammation. The findings provide a foundation for potential new interventions and therapeutics to reduce or prevent that inflammation.

COULD ULTRA-PROCESSED FOODS BE THE NEW ‘SILENT’ KILLER?
FAU Physicians Urge Reduced Consumption of Ultra-processed Foods in U.S. Diets
BOCA RATON, Fla. – February 20, 2024 – From fizzy drinks to cereals and packaged snacks to processed meat, ultra-processed foods are packed with additives. Oil, fat, sugar, starch and sodium, as well as emulsifiers such as carrageenan, mono- and diglycerides, carboxymethylcellulose, polysorbate and soy lecithin continue to strip food of healthy nutrients while introducing other ingredients that could also be detrimental to human health.
Hundreds of novel ingredients never encountered by human physiology are now found in nearly 60 percent of the average adult’s diet and nearly 70 percent of children’s diets in the United States.
While obesity and lack of physical activity are well recognized contributors to avoidable morbidity and mortality in the U.S., another emerging hazard is the unprecedented consumption of these ultra-processed foods in the standard American diet. This may be the new “silent” killer, as was unrecognized high blood pressure in previous decades.

NCH NAMED AMONG THE TOP 2% IN THE NATION AND A TOP 50 HOSPITAL FOR SURGICAL CARE BY HEALTHGRADES
February 19, 2024 – NCH announced today that it is one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for 2024, according to new research released by Healthgrades, the leading resource consumers use to find a hospital or doctor. This achievement puts NCH in the top 2% of hospitals nationwide for overall clinical performance and, along with being named one of America’s Top 50 Hospitals for Surgical Care, reflects our commitment to exceptional patient care.
To determine the top hospitals for 2024, Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates for more than 30 conditions and procedures at approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide. Unlike other hospital studies, Healthgrades ratings are based solely on what matters most: patient outcomes. The 2024 Healthgrades analysis revealed significant variation in hospital performance, making it increasingly important to seek care at top-rated programs. From 2020-2022, if all hospitals, as a group, performed similarly to America’s 100 Best Hospitals, 180,413 lives could have been saved.*

CLEVELAND CLINIC RESEARCH SHOWS STRONG LINK BETWEEN LEWY BODY PATHOLOGY AND BRAIN BLEEDS IN PATIENTS WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
Findings offer important implications for screening candidates for new Alzheimer’s disease treatments
February 14, 2024 – New Cleveland Clinic research found the presence of Lewy body pathology – abnormal aggregations of the proteins alpha-synuclein and neurites in the brain – in association with Alzheimer’s disease greatly increased the risk for cerebral amyloid angiopathy, or brain bleeds.
Published today in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association, the findings suggest identifying risk factors for cerebral amyloid angiopathy is important for assessing patient candidacy for emerging anti-amyloid therapies to treat mild Alzheimer’s.
“Currently, commonly tested biomarkers of Alzheimer’s do not enable the clinician to rule out co-pathologies that increase risk for cerebral amyloid angiopathy,” said Jagan Pillai, M.D., Ph.D., a neurologist at Cleveland Clinic’s Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Cleveland and lead author of the study. “These findings provide further clues about underlying pathologic processes and should be considered when assessing a patient for anti-amyloid therapies.”

RESEARCHERS OPTIMIZE GENETIC TESTS FOR DIVERSE POPULATIONS TO TACKLE HEALTH DISPARITIES
Improved genetic tests more accurately assess disease risk regardless of genetic ancestry.
February 20, 2024 -To prevent an emerging genomic technology from contributing to health disparities, a scientific team funded by the National Institutes of Health has devised new ways to improve a genetic testing method called a polygenic risk score. Since polygenic risk scores have not been effective for all populations, the researchers recalibrated these genetic tests using ancestrally diverse genomic data. As reported in Nature Medicine, the optimized tests provide a more accurate assessment of disease risk across diverse populations.
Genetic tests look at the small differences between individuals’ genomes, known as genomic variants, and polygenic risk scores are tools for assessing many genomic variants across the genome to determine a person’s risk for disease. As the use of polygenic risk scores grows, one major concern is that the genomic datasets used to calculate the scores often heavily overrepresent people of European ancestry.

Study details the unprecedented scale, diversity, and power of the All of Us Research Program.
February 20, 2024- Researchers have discovered more than 275 million previously unreported genetic variants, identified from data shared by nearly 250,000 participants of the National Institutes of Health’s All of Us Research Program. Half of the genomic data are from participants of non-European genetic ancestry. The unexplored cache of variants provides researchers new pathways to better understand the genetic influences on health and disease, especially in communities who have been left out of research in the past. The findings are detailed in (link is external)Nature(link is external), along with three other articles in Nature journals.
Nearly 4 million of the newly identified variants are in areas that may be tied to disease risk. The genomic data detailed in the study are available to registered researchers in the Researcher Workbench(link is external), the program’s platform for data analysis.
