BROWARD HEALTH ADVANCES STRUCTURAL HEART CARE WITH FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND PROCEDURES
The team that performed the first Alcohol Septal Ablation (ASA) procedure at Broward Health Medical Center.
March 5, 2026 – Broward Health has achieved significant milestones in advanced cardiovascular care, further strengthening its expanding cardiac service line and increasing access to innovative, minimally invasive treatment options for the South Florida community.
In February, Pablo Rengifo-Moreno, M.D., director of structural heart disease at Broward Health, successfully performed the hospital’s first combined Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge (TEER) simultaneous Tricuspid Valve and Miral Valve Repair for a high-risk patient who was not an ideal candidate for open-heart surgery.
“Bringing these advanced structural heart procedures to Broward Health means our patients can receive highly specialized, minimally invasive care close to home,” said Dr. Rengifo. “For individuals who may not be candidates for open-heart surgery, these therapies offer new hope, improved quality of life, and, in many cases, a faster recovery.”
TEER is a minimally invasive alternative to open-heart surgery that involves placing a catheter through a vein in the groin to repair damaged, leaking heart valves. This procedure addresses both the mitral (left side) and tricuspid (right side) valves in one session, which minimizes patient risk, reduces recovery time, and avoids the need for more invasive surgery. The case was a success, executed in collaboration with the cath lab team, cardiac anesthesia, and advanced imaging provided by Dr. Alejandro Mendoza.

Tampa General Hospital Foundation Receives $10 Million to Innovate Cancer Research and Care
Ian and Jean MacKechnie made the transformative gift that will fund an immunotherapy lab and the Taneja Surgical, Neuroscience & Transplant Tower.
March 5, 2026 – The Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Foundation announced a transformational $10 million gift to create the Ian & Jean MacKechnie Immunotherapy Lab, part of the TGH Cancer Institute. Part of their gift will also fund the Taneja Surgical, Neuroscience & Transplant Tower, currently under construction adjacent to Tampa General’s academic medical center on Davis Islands.
The 8,000-square-foot lab will be housed in the USF Health building in downtown Tampa, in the heart of the innovative Tampa Medical & Research District. The academic research conducted there will be a highlight of the strong and dynamic partnership between Tampa General and the University of South Florida.
The MacKechnies were inspired to give after Ian MacKechnie was treated by Dr. Jorge Marcet, the medical director of Colorectal Surgery Services at Tampa General.

Jupiter Medical Center Celebrates Public Launch of “Generational Health” Campaign

Historic $500 million fundraising campaign to transform the future of care for all patients
February 5, 2026 — Jupiter Medical Center announced a major milestone in Generational Health, its landmark $500 million philanthropic campaign to shape the next era of healthcare in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast. Fueled by extraordinary donor support, the campaign has already surpassed the halfway mark, with $258 million raised to date, making it the most ambitious fundraising initiative in the hospital’s history.
Generational Health is rooted in a simple but powerful promise: deliver the right care, at the right time, for every moment that matters, not only for today’s patients, but for those who will depend on Jupiter Medical Center decades from now.
“We are constantly challenging ourselves to take patient care to the next level,” said Amit Rastogi, MD, MHCM, President and CEO of Jupiter Medical Center. “Our growth is about more than increasing capacity; it is about redefining health care excellence. This campaign accelerates investments in advanced technologies, expanded services, and next-generation facilities that will define the future of medicine in our region. During the campaign’s quiet phase, Jupiter Medical Center Foundation secured several transformative gifts that accelerated the hospital’s growth and helped build momentum toward its historic fundraising goal. This included the largest gift in the hospital’s history, $35 million from Tim and Jayne Donahue in support of the new 92-bed Patient Care Tower. Additional investments included $10 million from Hugh, Nancy, and Chad Elliott to expand the electrophysiology lab and Heart and Vascular Institute; and $25 million from Johnny and Terry Gray to advance the Surgical Institute. Together, these early investments catalyzed the campaign’s progress and scale.

MEDICATION AVAILABLE FOR ADULTS WITH SICKLE CELL DISEASE THROUGH CLINICAL TRIAL AT MEMORIAL
March 4, 2026 – Memorial Healthcare System is participating in a multi-center clinical research study evaluating an investigational medication for adults living with sickle cell disease.
The study is being conducted at Memorial’s Sickle Cell Medical Home in Hollywood, which is currently the only participating site in Florida. The investigational medication is being evaluated as part of a Phase III clinical trial sponsored externally. The purpose of the study is to further assess the safety and potential clinical effects of the medication in adults with sickle cell disease.
Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells, leading to chronic health complications, including anemia, pain episodes, and increased risk of infection. Clinical research studies are an important part of advancing potential future treatment options for individuals living with this condition.
“Our facility provides sickle cell patients a medical home, one that features the resources of a day hospital, primary care, hematology, pharmacy, and social services at one location,” said Dr. Foluso “Joy” Ogunsile, a hematologist and director at the sickle cell medical home. “We’re uniquely qualified to offer this novel study as we work to stop the cycle of blood cell breakdown and pain.”

AI-Driven Chart Review Accurately Identifies Potential Rare Disease Trial Participants in New Study
Study from Cleveland Clinic and Dyania Health highlights the potential of large language models in more rapidly identifying patients who could benefit from clinical research
MARCH 3, 2026 – Newly published research by Cleveland Clinic and Dyania Health demonstrates how a medically trained large language model system can accurately and efficiently screen electronic medical records (EMRs) to identify patients who are eligible for a rare disease clinical trial.
Published in The Journal of Cardiac Failure, the official journal of the Heart Failure Society of America, the study offers real-world evidence that artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled medical chart review can improve the speed, accuracy and equity of trial enrollment.
The study assessed the performance of an AI system – developed by Dyania Health and deployed at Cleveland Clinic – tasked with pre-screening participants for DepleTTR-CM, a Phase 3 trial for transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM), a type of heart failure mostly seen in older adults.

Mayo Clinic researchers find combination therapy reduces effects of ‘zombie cells’ in diabetic kidney disease
March 5, 2026 — Mayo Clinic researchers have identified a drug-and-supplement combination therapy that is capable of reducing the harmful effects of senescent cells – also known as “zombie cells” – in diabetic kidney disease. In eBioMedicine, a publication of The Lancet, the team reported that the combination of the cancer drug dasatanib and a naturally occurring substance known as quercetin decreased inflammation and boosted protective factors in the kidney.
Diabetic kidney disease affects more than 12 million people in the U.S. and is the leading cause of kidney failure. While newer treatments can delay loss of kidney function, there is currently no cure.
“Our study found that the combination therapy, given over a short period of time, reduced the abundance of senescent cells in a preclinical model of diabetic kidney disease and also improved kidney function,” says LaTonya Hickson, M.D., a nephrologist at Mayo Clinic in Florida and principal investigator of the study.
To extend the health of the kidney, researchers have been interested in addressing the presence of senescent cells, which fail to undergo the natural death process and linger in tissues, contributing to aging and disease. The treatment approach involves senolytics, natural and designed substances that together selectively target senescent cells.
In a previously conducted, pilot clinical trial, Dr. Hickson and Mayo Clinic researchers found that the combination of dasatanib and quercetin reduced senescent cells in skin and fat tissues in patients with diabetic kidney disease. However, the effect of the combination therapy on senescence and protective factors in the diabetic kidney had not yet been described.

Stevens Construction completes Premier Women’s Care of Southwest Florida
March 4, 2026 – Stevens Construction has completed construction of Premier Women’s Care of Southwest Florida’s new 40,797-square-foot medical office building located at 1606 Santa Barbara Blvd. in Cape Coral, announced Daniel Adams, Stevens Construction executive vice president and partner.
Now open in its new location, Premier Women’s Care of Southwest Florida has expanded its Cape Coral practice, which offers comprehensive gynecological and obstetrical care, including well-woman exams, family planning, adolescent gynecology, gynecologic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, prenatal and postpartum care, fetal monitoring, menopause care and weight management. Premier Women’s Care also has the only urogynecologist serving Fort Myers and Cape Coral, and the new Cape Coral building offers dedicated urogynecology treatment suites for pelvic floor disorders, including incontinence and vaginal prolapse.
The practice also provides 3D screening mammograms and pelvic ultrasounds, as well as diagnostic mammogram and breast ultrasounds, ensuring seamless, on-site breast care.
Situated on 2.27 acres, the first floor of the new office building features three ultrasound suites, 3D mammography with changing rooms and offices. In addition, 3,000 square feet of office space is available for lease. Also on the first floor is a parking garage to accommodate 18 vehicles and two car charging stations. The second floor includes 37 exam rooms, four enhanced procedure rooms, phlebotomy, consultation rooms, offices, storage and a breakroom.

The prestigious service award highlights the achievements of physicians, scientists and physician-scientists who have made outstanding contributions to surgical oncology through service to SSO, research, training the next generation of surgical oncologists, or advancing clinical care or health policy. The award’s namesake, Charles M. Balch, M.D., is a professor of Surgical Oncology at UT MD Anderson. Internationally regarded as a leading surgical oncologist, Balch has actively served SSO for 30 years, including leading as its president in 1991.
