Joint Statement by Secretary of State Rubio and Secretary of Health and Human Services Kennedy on the Termination of U.S. Membership in the World Health Organization (WHO)
January 22, 2026- Today, the United States withdrew from the World Health Organization (WHO), freeing itself from its constraints, as President Trump promised on his first day in office by signing E.O. 14155. This action responds to the WHO’s failures during the COVID-19 pandemic and seeks to rectify the harm from those failures inflicted on the American people. Promises made, promises kept.Like many international organizations, the WHO abandoned its core mission and acted repeatedly against the interests of the United States.
Although the United States was a founding member and the WHO’s largest financial contributor, the organization pursued a politicized, bureaucratic agenda driven by nations hostile to American interests. In doing so, the WHO obstructed the timely and accurate sharing of critical information that could have saved American lives and then concealed those failures under the pretext of acting “in the interest of public health.” Even on our way out of the organization, the WHO tarnished and trashed everything that America has done for it.
The WHO refuses to hand over the American flag that hung in front of it, arguing it has not approved our withdrawal and, in fact, claims that we owe it compensation. From our days as its primary founder, primary financial backer, and primary champion until now, our final day, the insults to America continue.Going forward, U.S. engagement with the WHO will be limited strictly to effectuate our withdrawal and to safeguard the health and safety of the American people.

WHO statement on notification of withdrawal of the United States
January 24, 2026 – As a founding member of the World Health Organization (WHO), the United States of America has contributed significantly to many of WHO’s greatest achievements, including the eradication of smallpox, and progress against many other public health threats including polio, HIV, Ebola, influenza, tuberculosis, malaria, neglected tropical diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food safety and more.
WHO therefore regrets the United States’ notification of withdrawal from WHO – a decision that makes both the United States and the world less safe. The notification of withdrawal raises issues that will be considered by the WHO Executive Board at its regular meeting starting on 2 February and by the World Health Assembly at its annual meeting in May 2026.
WHO takes note of statements from the government of the United States that say WHO has “trashed and tarnished” and insulted it, and compromised its independence. The reverse is true. As we do with every Member State, WHO has always sought to engage with the United States in good faith, with full respect for its sovereignty.
In its statements, the United States cited as one of the reasons for its decision, “WHO failures during the COVID-19 pandemic”, including “obstructing the timely and accurate sharing of critical information” and that WHO “concealed those failures”. While no organization or government got everything right, WHO stands by its response to this unprecedented global health crisis. Throughout the pandemic, WHO acted quickly, shared all information it had rapidly and transparently with the world, and advised Member States on the basis of the best available evidence.

BROWARD HEALTH UNVEILS NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART GME FACILITY TO EMPOWER THE GROWING PHYSICIAN WORKFORCE
New 28,250-sq.-ft. Graduate Medical Education hub at Broward Health Medical Center advances commitment to medical education and access to care
January 22, 2026 – Broward Health has unveiled a new 28,250-square-foot, state-of-the-art Graduate Medical Education (GME) training, education and support facility at Broward Health Medical Center, further expanding the system’s investment in the future of healthcare.
A celebratory ribbon cutting marked the completion of the $10.8 million, 14-month renovation, which is now one of the largest GME spaces in South Florida.
Designed to support Broward Health’s evolving GME program and the next generation of physicians, the new facility is five times larger than the previous space and was purpose-built to meet the needs of modern medical education. The training and wellness facility features an advanced simulation lab, flexible classrooms, a conference room, resident lounges, collaborative workspaces, a library, private on-call suites and a dedicated wellness room, as well as relaxation rooms to promote balance, resilience and mental well-being as nearly half of resident physicians nationwide report symptoms of burnout during training.
“The future of healthcare is shaped by the physicians we train today,” said Shane Strum, President and CEO of Broward Health. “This new GME facility at Broward Health Medical Center reflects our continued commitment to investing in the next generation of doctors while expanding access to high-quality care for the communities we serve.”

Nicklaus Children’s Announces New Board Chair Appointments Across Health System, Hospital, Foundation
JANUARY 22, 2026 – Today, Nicklaus Children’s announced new board leadership appointments across its governing entities, with new chairs named for the Nicklaus Children’s Health System, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Foundation boards of directors.
Jaret L. Davis, Esq., has been named chair of the Nicklaus Children’s Health System Board, the governing body that oversees the strategic direction of the region’s only health care system exclusively dedicated to children and the parent organization of all Nicklaus Children’s entities. Davis is a senior vice president of Greenberg Traurig P.A. and co-managing shareholder of the firm’s Miami office, where he focuses his practice on domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions, capital-raising transactions, and large financings. He is also a member of the firm’s global Executive Committee.
A Miami native and long-standing community leader who has served in various community organizations, Davis brings extensive experience in corporate governance, technology, and economic development. He has been dedicated to the Nicklaus Children’s mission for more than 15 years, previously as chair of the hospital board, chair of the system’s physician group, vice chair of the System, and in leadership roles on various board committees. Through these roles, Davis has helped guide the health system through extensive growth over the past five years. He and fellow board members have provided governing oversight of key strategic initiatives, including the construction of the Kenneth C. January 22, 2026 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) is strengthening its leadership in blood cancer research and precision oncology with internationally recognized physician-scientist Dr. Gustavo Rivero appointed to the TGH Cancer Institute as director of Translational Research for Hematologic Malignancies, a group of disorders that affect the bone marrow and blood cells. Rivero also serves as associate professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.
Rivero brings a deep portfolio of translational research, academic leadership and clinical excellence to the cancer institute. Previously, he served as Leukemia Program director at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C., and as associate professor at Baylor College of Medicine, Waco, Texas, in both the Division of Hematology & Oncology and the Translational Biology & Molecular Medicine Program. Palm Beach Gardens City Council Approves New Freestanding Emergency Room in Avenir
January 22, 2026 – The Palm Beach Gardens City Council has approved plans for a new, $18 million freestanding emergency room in the rapidly growing Avenir community, expanding access to lifesaving emergency care for residents in northern Palm Beach County.
The 12-bay, 24/7 emergency room will be located near the corner of Coconut Boulevard and Northlake Boulevard and will be staffed around the clock by board-certified emergency physicians, experienced nurses, and support staff. Designed to bring hospital-level emergency care closer to home, the facility will feature advanced diagnostic capabilities, including CT imaging, ultrasound, X-ray, and on-site laboratory services.
Affiliated with Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center and part of Palm Beach Health Network, the freestanding emergency room will ensure seamless continuity of care. Patients requiring hospital admission will be transferred directly to Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, with close coordination alongside Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue.

“The American Medical Association is deeply alarmed by efforts to weaken long-standing evidence-based vaccine recommendations, including suggestions that polio vaccination should seemingly not be routinely recommended to patients.
“This is not a theoretical debate—it is a dangerous step backward.
“Vaccines have saved millions of lives and virtually eliminated devastating diseases like polio in the United States. There is no cure for polio. When vaccination rates fall, paralysis, lifelong disability, and death return. The science on this is settled.
“Moving away from routine immunizations, which involves discussions between clinicians and patients, does not increase freedom—it increases suffering. It puts children, families, and entire communities at risk and undermines the public health protections that generations of Americans depend on.

Commercial health insurer CEOs testify on health care affordability; AHA submits statements for House hearings
January 22, 2026 – The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health and Ways and Means Committee Jan. 22 hosted hearings on health care affordability that included testimony from leaders of five major commercial health insurers: Stephen Hemsley, CEO of UnitedHealth Group, David Joyner, chairman and CEO of CVS Health, Gail Boudreaux, president and CEO of Elevance Health, David Cordani, president, CEO and chairman of the board of The Cigna Group, and Paul Markovich, president and CEO of Ascendiun. Both hearings focused on rising health care costs and access challenges under commercial coverage. The AHA shared statements with both committees that discussed the current landscape of affordability and how the insurance market has driven health care costs upward.
“We share the committee’s concerns regarding the cost of health care and coverage, and we appreciate your focus on the role insurers play in high and rising costs for American families, taxpayers and employers,” the AHA wrote. “For years, the AHA has highlighted how, even when patients have insurance, their access to care is being delayed, disrupted and denied. Simply put, actions by many commercial insurers erect barriers that make it more difficult for patients to receive timely access to needed medical care.

Jan. 22, 2026 — Norberta Ruiz was told her daughter had a very low chance of survival. She was born with Meckel-Gruber syndrome, a rare genetic disorder marked by an encephalocele—a protrusion of the brain through an opening in the skull, typically at the back—along with extra fingers and toes and enlarged, cystic kidneys.
But Ruiz remained hopeful and pushed forward.
At age six, her daughter learned to walk. This year, thanks to groundbreaking advances in medical technology and dedicated care, her daughter’s life changed.
Lee Health is thrilled to announce that it is the first in Florida to complete a pediatric scoliosis surgery with a robotic guide. A robotic arm, alongside a computer navigation system, provided guidance and security for the placement of her daughter’s bone screws.
Patients like Suri Ruiz would be unable to regain normal movement and quality of life without this integrated orthopedic and neurosurgical approach.
Before the surgery, Ruiz experienced significant pain in her lower back and struggled with frequent falls. Today, she is walking with greater stability and experiencing much less pain.

During the visit, the team delivered nearly 1,000 pounds of rice and beans to support ECHO’s food pantry and helped portion and bag the staples for community members in need.

New study links combination of hormone therapy and tirzepatide to greater weight loss after menopause
January 22, 2026 — A new study led by Mayo Clinic found that postmenopausal women receiving menopausal hormone therapy lost 35% more weight while taking tirzepatide, a Food and Drug Administration-approved drug for the treatment of overweight and obesity. The findings, published in The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology, & Women’s Health, could expand treatment possibilities for millions of women struggling with obesity and obesity-related diseases after menopause.
Menopause can accelerate age-related weight gain and increase the likelihood of developing overweight and obesity, which are major risk factors for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and other conditions. The decline in estrogen levels characteristic of menopause is also linked to changes independent of weight that can potentially raise cardiovascular risk. “This study provides important insights for developing more effective and personalized strategies for managing cardiometabolic risk in postmenopausal women,” says Regina Castaneda, M.D., postdoctoral research fellow at Mayo Clinic and first author of the study.
Hormone therapy is the most effective first-line treatment for menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes and night sweats, which affect up to 75% of postmenopausal women. While evidence on how this therapy may interact with weight-loss medications is limited, some research has shown that postmenopausal women using hormone therapy experience greater weight loss when treated with the GLP-1-based obesity medication semaglutide.

Mayo Clinic Transplant performs record 2,065 organ transplants in 2025
January 22, 206 — Mayo Clinic Transplant achieved the highest annual transplant volume in its history in 2025 by performing 2,065 solid organ transplants across its Arizona, Florida and Minnesota campuses, according to data from the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN).
The new record surpasses 2,006 transplanted solid organs in 2024 and 1,952 in 2023, reflecting Mayo Clinic’s dedication to saving more lives through continued advances in transplantation driven by new research, technology and innovation.
“This number represents new beginnings full of hope for so many,” says Julie Heimbach, M.D., transplant surgeon and director of Mayo Clinic Transplant in Rochester. “This incredible milestone is only made possible by the generosity of our donors and donor families, the resilience of our transplant recipients, and the unwavering dedication of our transplant care teams.”
The record volume is encouraging, as the number of patients waiting on the national transplant list remains daunting. More than 109,000 people in the U.S. are currently waiting for lifesaving organs, according to OPTN data.

NIH Announces Major Policy Shift to End Use of Human Fetal Tissue in NIH-Supported Research
January 22, 2025- The National Institutes of Health (NIH) today announced a new policy ending the use of human fetal tissue in NIH-supported research, marking a significant milestone in the Trump Administration’s efforts to modernize biomedical science and accelerate innovation.
Effective immediately, NIH funds will no longer be used to support research involving human fetal tissue from elective abortions. The policy applies across the NIH Intramural Research Program and all NIH-supported extramural research, including grants, cooperative agreements, other transaction awards, and research and development contracts. This action supersedes prior NIH guidance and reflects a clear shift toward next-generation, validated research models better suited to today’s rapidly evolving scientific landscape.
