The donations establish the Haslam Family Section for Cardiovascular Genetics, which will provide testing for family members of patients diagnosed with an inherited heart condition
NOVEMBER 18, 2024 – Cleveland Clinic has received gifts of $30 million from the Bailey-Haslam family to support and expand cardiovascular genetics research by establishing the Haslam Family Section for Cardiovascular Genetics at the Sydell and Arnold Miller Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute. ‘PIPAC’ Procedure Delivers Hope, Improves Lives of Cancer Patients With Inoperable Tumors
NOVEMBER 17, 2024 – A groundbreaking approach to delivering chemotherapy at Memorial Hospital West is transforming the treatment landscape for gastrointestinal cancer patients who previously faced limited options.
Pressurized intraperitoneal aerosolized chemotherapy (PIPAC) is a minimally-invasive, palliative procedure designed for patients whose cancer has metastasized and is unresponsive to conventional therapies, particularly when tumors are inoperable. Administered every six weeks alongside intravenous chemotherapy, PIPAC aims to slow disease progression, alleviate symptoms, and potentially extend the lives of patients.
Memorial Cancer Institute at Memorial Hospital West is one of the few institutions in the U.S. offering the procedure.
“Until recently, PIPAC was available only through clinical trials,” said surgical oncologist Omar Llaguna, MD. “However, data from European and Asian centers, along with promising results from early U.S. trials, indicated highly encouraging outcomes, so Memorial became an early adopter of this innovative technology. The pressurized aerosolized delivery system allows for lower doses of chemotherapy while improving penetration, all within a minimally-invasive procedure that eliminates the need for an overnight hospital stay,” said Llaguna.

Maximize Your Health Benefits: Why Scheduling Surgery by Year-End Could Save You
November 18, 2024—If you’ve met your 2024 health insurance deductible, you could save significantly on out-of-pocket costs by scheduling elective procedures before December 31. With the holiday season approaching, it’s a great time to invest in your health while taking advantage of potential savings.
“At West Boca Medical Center, we believe in making healthcare accessible and affordable, especially when it comes to relieving pain and enhancing quality of life,” said CEO Jerad Hanlon. “If you’re able to schedule your procedure before year’s end, you’re not only benefiting financially but also prioritizing your well-being for the year ahead.”

Jupiter Medical Center Earns Highest Safety Rating – ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group
New Grade for fall 2024 is a national recognition for commitment to patient safety.
November 18, 2024 – Jupiter Medical Center has earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade, the highest safety grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety. Jupiter Medical Center is the only hospital in the Palm Beach and Martin County region to receive the “A” rating.
Leapfrog evaluates over 2,600 general hospitals nationwide by assigning a grade from “A” to “F.” This assessment is based on more than 30 performance measures that reflect incidents such as errors, accidents, injuries, and infections, as well as the preventive systems that hospitals have implemented.
“Safety is one of the top priorities for patients when deciding where to receive care,” said Amit Rastogi, MD, MHCM, President and CEO of Jupiter Medical Center. “Our commitment to the highest level of patient care is the foundation of everything we do. This national designation affirms to our community that the care provided by Jupiter Medical Center is the safest possible in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.”
“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade is a significant accomplishment for Jupiter Medical Center,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It reflects enormous dedication to your patients and their families, and your whole community should be proud. I extend my congratulations to Jupiter Medical Center, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”

Cleveland Clinic-Led Trial Finds Heart Implant May Be Effective Alternative to Blood Thinners for Those with Atrial Fibrillation
A new Cleveland Clinic-led trial found that a minimally-invasive procedure – left atrial appendage closure – resulted in significantly less bleeding in patients undergoing a catheter ablation to treat atrial fibrillation, compared to blood thinners, while preserving low rates of stroke, blood clots and death.
The study is the first direct comparison between oral anticoagulants – commonly referred to as blood thinners – and left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) following catheter ablation. Catheter ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that treats an irregular heartbeat.
Current guidelines recommend continuation of blood-thinner medication following atrial fibrillation ablation in patients at high risk for stroke. This often means that patients are required to be on blood thinners for the rest of their lives.
Findings from the “Randomized Comparison of Left Atrial Appendage Closure with Oral Anticoagulation after Catheter Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation (OPTION)” trial were presented today during a late-breaking science session at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2024. It was simultaneously published online in the New England Journal of Medicine.
“Atrial fibrillation patients are five times more likely to suffer a stroke, and their two options to help manage that risk are to take oral anticoagulants indefinitely or to get their left atrial appendage closed,” said the study’s lead author Oussama Wazni, M.D., MBA, section head of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing at Cleveland Clinic. “The question we wanted to answer with this trial was if LAAC would safely reduce bleeding rates while maintaining low stroke rates compared to oral anticoagulants after atrial fibrillation ablation.”

Mayo Clinic performs successful face transplant, restoring vital functions for Michigan man
NOVEMBER 19, 2024 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — A Michigan man can blink, swallow, smile and breathe through his nose for the first time in a decade thanks to a face transplant performed at Mayo Clinic. This transformative and complex procedure underscores Mayo Clinic’s skilled multidisciplinary surgical team who provide hope to patients with complex medical needs.
Derek Pfaff’s life changed forever on March 5, 2014, when a tragic incident during his college years left his face severely damaged by a gunshot.
“I was under a lot of pressure at college. I don’t remember making the decision to take my own life. When I woke up in the hospital, I originally thought I had been in a car accident,” he says.
Despite undergoing 58 reconstructive facial surgeries in 10 years before going to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, he was still unable to eat solid food or speak casually with friends and family. Wearing glasses proved impossible without a nose. This transformational face transplant at Mayo Clinic means the now 30-year-old from Harbor Beach, Michigan, will once again be able to do all those things he has missed. He has also become a passionate advocate for suicide prevention and plans to share his story to encourage others who are struggling to get help.

Wellington Regional Medical Center introduces new, digital resuscitation training and education
Innovative program verifies CPR expertise to help increase cardiac arrest survival
November 19, 2024 — Patients who suffer a cardiac arrest must receive the highest quality CPR possible, which is known to be the cornerstone of survival. More than 209,000 in-hospital cardiac arrests occur annually in the U.S. with survival rates at about 26% from adult in-hospital cardiac arrest. For decades, the CPR training standard for healthcare providers has been Basic Life Support with a requirement for participants to renew their course completion card every two years. However, studies show CPR skills can decay within three to six months following this training.
Wellington Regional Medical Center, 235-bed acute care hospital recognizes the importance of high-quality CPR competence and performance to save more lives. Today, Wellington Regional Medical Center introduced Resuscitation Quality Improvement® (RQI®), a program co-developed by the American Heart Association® and Laerdal Medical, to help clinicians achieve, master and sustain high-quality CPR skills and competence, resulting in improved patient outcomes.
The hospital’s RQI program adoption demonstrates its continued, longstanding commitment to providing a positive, proactive and patient-centered experience and leveraging innovative solutions to advance patient care and prepare clinicians to deliver that care. More than 1,066 clinicians are enrolled in Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support course instruction, which is delivered through 4 RQI Simulation Stations. The stations are positioned throughout the hospital in Conference Room A, the 3 North Dayroom, the Postpartum Conference room, and there is a portable station that can be checked out by leaders to bring to their unit which will be housed at the Staff Development Office in the 1395 building. This will afford learners with greater flexibility and 24/7 access to resuscitation training and education.

Study Shows Avacopan Effective for Most Serious Vasculitis Cases
NOVEMBER 18, 2024–New research to be presented by an investigator from Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) shows avacopan is effective in achieving disease control with less steroid exposure in patients with ear, nose and throat (ENT) manifestations of ANCA associated vasculitis –
Robert F. Spiera, MD, Director of the Scleroderma, Vasculitis, and Myositis Center at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), helped lead this latest analysis which was presented at the ACR Convergence 2024, the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology. The study built on the pivotal ADVOCATE trial, focusing on patients with the most severe manifestations of vasculitis in the ENT region, which has historically been harder to treat.
Avacopan (Tavneos, Amgen) was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2021 for the treatment of severe active anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis, a rare autoimmune disorder that can cause potentially life-threatening inflammation by restricting blood flow to vital organs.
Once considered a fatal condition, ANCA associated vasculitis is now treatable, especially if identified early and treated with appropriate immunsosuppressive medications. Avacopan is a targeted therapy that offers a safer and more effective alternative to prednisone which had traditionally been a mainstay of remission induction therapy in these disorders but carries with it high risks such as infections, weight gain, diabetes, and bone thinning.

Study Shows Knee Osteoarthritis Causes More Pain and Inflammation in Women
NOVEMEBR 18, 2024 – Women with knee osteoarthritis (OA) experience more pain and inflammation than men, according to a new study led by researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) and The Rockefeller University. The work indicates that different genes and biological processes may cause knee OA to be worse in women compared to men and suggests that women may benefit from personalized treatments that target those specific mechanisms.
“These findings give some reassurance to female patients that there are physiological reasons why they are having more pain,” says Bella Mehta, MBBS, MS, rheumatologist at HSS and lead author of the study. “Our work may also help us develop better therapies, especially for women with more severe symptoms.”
The study enrolled 135 patients with knee OA who were scheduled to have total knee replacement. A total of 82 participants were female. Researchers analyzed patient-reported symptoms of pain, histology (tissue samples removed during surgery and examined under the microscope) and genetic markers of inflammation in the blood.

U.S. Surgeon General Releases New Report: Eliminating Tobacco-Related Disease and Death, Addressing Health Disparities
NOVEMBER 19, 2024 – WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Surgeon General released a new report on health disparities related to tobacco use, which finds that despite the nation’s substantial progress in reducing cigarette smoking and secondhand smoke exposure in the overall U.S. population, that progress has not been equal for all population groups. Disparities in tobacco use persist by race and ethnicity, income, education, sexual orientation and gender identity, occupation, geography, behavioral health status, and other factors. Additionally, cigarette smoking and secondhand smoke exposure continue to cause nearly half a million deaths a year in the United States—nearly one in five of all deaths.

NIH-developed AI algorithm matches potential volunteers to clinical trials
Such an algorithm may save clinicians time and accelerate clinical enrollment and research.
November 18, 2025 – Researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm to help speed up the process of matching potential volunteers to relevant clinical research trials listed on ClinicalTrials.gov. A study published in Nature Communications(link is external) found that the AI algorithm, called TrialGPT, could successfully identify relevant clinical trials for which a person is eligible and provide a summary that clearly explains how that person meets the criteria for study enrollment. The researchers concluded that this tool could help clinicians navigate the vast and ever-changing range of clinical trials available to their patients, which may lead to improved clinical trial enrollment and faster progress in medical research.
