January 29, 2022 — Jeff & Cindy Conine and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation recently hosted the Conine All-Star Golf Classic, an annual fundraiser that helps underwrite expenses at the Conine Clubhouse, a hotel-like facility adjacent to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital where families can stay for free while a child is being treated.
The 30th annual event was held for the seventh consecutive year at the Fort Lauderdale Country Club. The 276-player tournament raised $550,000 and has now generated well over $8 million in its history for the Conine Clubhouse, enabling more than 25,000 families to stay at the facility and remain close to sick kids during critical times in their lives.
“I wouldn’t trade my athletic career for anything, but this event enables us to affect people’s lives, so that’s much bigger than sports,” said Jeff Conine. “The Conine Clubhouse is a special place that we love supporting, and I’m prouder of that than anything I did on the baseball field.”

A JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE WITH BROWARD HEALTH
In October 2021, Alyson West embarked on a vacation to visit her friends in Fort Lauderdale, a trip that would mark a turning point in her life. The Nashville resident was caused to fall 12 feet down on a boat and was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center, where a multidisciplinary team was waiting for her to be examined.
The 27-year-old fractured part of her cervical spine and injured nerves near the back of her neck.
Dr. Roberts, the chief of neurosurgery at Broward Health Medical Center, vividly remembers the critical moment, “I recall she didn’t have any sensation or movement. We typically call that a complete injury, and patients usually don’t recover from a movement standpoint.”
Dr. Roberts performed two surgeries and she was later transferred to the Respiratory Care Unit (RCU).
“This accident has impacted my whole life,” West said. “I went from being fully independent to now moving with great difficulty, relying on a wheelchair or a walker.”

SALUSCARE PARTICIPATES IN PILOT PROGRAM TO BENEFIT HEALTH CARE WORKERS
The program is designed to reduce employee burnout and improve effectiveness
February 7, 2024 – More than 30 members of management and staff at SalusCare, the largest nonprofit mental health and substance abuse treatment agency in Southwest Florida, are participating in a pilot program designed to decrease stress and burnout of health care workers. The weekly training from January through April aims to improve job satisfaction and ability to meet the area’s growing needs for mental and behavioral health services.
The pilot training uses evidence-based techniques developed through research since 1991 by the HeartMath Institute. It trains people to be able to pull out of fight or flight responses to shift from stress, dysregulation and incoherence to self-regulation, coherence and resilience, resulting in less anxiety, stress, fatigue and greater energy, health and fulfillment.
According to a 2022 study by the Centers for Disease Control, 46% of health workers reported feeling burned out often or very often, compared to 32% in 2018. In addition, Florida is facing workforce shortages across facilities that provide mental health services, according to the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration. “With a workforce shortage, it’s critical to take care of our employees so they can be effective and passionate, even as demands on them increase,” said Stacey Cook, CEO of SalusCare. “We believe we have a responsibility to help heal the workers who are charged with healing the community but are tired and burned out after COVID, Hurricane Ian and increased needs.”
Data collected at the start of the weekly program in January and at the end of the pilot in April will evaluate success. The program has been used nationwide for employees of the military, hospitals and first responders.

CMS OMH RECOGNIZES NATIONAL BLACK HIV/AIDS AWARENESS DAY (NBHAAD)
February 7, 2024 – Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Office of Minority Health (CMS OMH) recognizes National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD). Although anyone can be affected by HIV and AIDS, Black people account for higher proportions of new HIV diagnoses and people with HIV, compared to individuals of other races and ethnicities.
Despite making up only 13% of the total United States population, Black Americans accounted for 42% of new HIV diagnoses in the U.S. in 2019. Most of these new diagnoses affected men and were caused by male-to-male sexual contact. Obstacles like racism, discrimination, and mistrust in the health care system can prevent Black people from seeking or receiving HIV prevention services and treatment, like pre-exposure prophylaxis ( Though PrEP is highly effective in preventing HIV, only 8% of Black people who may benefit were prescribed it in 2019, compared to 23% of people who could benefit from the medication overall.
CMS OMH is committed to working with our partners to help reduce HIV/AIDS in the Black community by increasing awareness and promoting prevention. Use the resources below to share information about HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention with those you serve.
