Experts Challenge Aspirin Guidelines Based on Their Undue Reliance on a Flawed Trial

FAU and Other Distinguished Collaborators Publish Perspectives on Aspirin in Primary Prevention in Clinical Trials

April 2, 2025 – Recent guidelines have restricted aspirin use in the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association (AHA)/American College of Cardiology (ACC) guidelines restricted aspirin to patients under 70, and more recently, the United States Preventive Services Task Force restricted aspirin use to patients under 60. However, heart attack and stroke risks both rise with age, leaving health care providers unsure about when to stop prescribing aspirin, whether it should be used for primary prevention, and which patients would benefit most.

Researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine, and other distinguished collaborators who have led major trials of aspirin in primary prevention, have published their perspectives, “Aspirin in Primary Prevention: Undue Reliance on an Uninformative Trial Led to Misinformed Clinical Guidelines,” in Clinical Trials, the official journal of the Society for Clinical Trials.

Sarasota Memorial Joins Multi-Center Trial of New Drug Targeting Resistant, Late-Stage Ovarian Cancer

April 2, 2025– While ovarian cancer is relatively rare, it is a stealthy disease, with no noticeable symptoms until it reaches an advanced, less treatable stage.

Standard treatment in these later stages typically involves surgery followed by a course of platinum-based chemotherapy. Recurrence is common in this patient population, and patients often build up resistance to the platinum-based therapy.

To optimize treatment outcomes for patients whose late-stage cancer shows resistance to the standard treatment, Sarasota Memorial Research Institute has joined 30 research sites testing the efficacy of an experimental immunotherapeutic drug, Olvi-Vec, used in combination with FDA-approved platinum-based chemotherapy and targeted therapy drug bevacizumab.

Mayo Clinic researchers lead transformative shift toward neurorestorative treatment strategies for most severe forms of epilepsy

April 2, 2025 – Mayo Clinic is taking epilepsy research in a bold new direction, exploring treatment approaches to help patients living with the most severe and difficult-to-treat forms of epilepsy. About 50 million people worldwide are impacted by epilepsy. Approximately 30% of patients, or about 15 million people, suffer with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). While some patients experience only a few seizures per month, others may endure hundreds each day — ranging from episodes that are mild to life-threatening.

Current treatment options for patients with DRE include surgical procedures such as brain resection to remove a portion of the brain tissue responsible for generating seizures. A less invasive procedure involves laser ablation therapy that pinpoints and destroys abnormal brain tissue. While often effective, these surgical approaches carry the risk of possible side effects, such as memory impairment, motor deficits and speech difficulties. Neuromodulation is another surgical approach that uses electrical or magnetic stimulation to interrupt abnormal neural activity without removing brain tissue.

Blood pressure patterns in early pregnancy tied to hypertension risk up to 14 years later

NIH-supported study reveals new risk group for future high blood pressure, heart disease.

April 2, 2025 – Blood pressure patterns observed in the first half of pregnancy, even among women without hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), can identify women at greater risk of developing hypertension up to 14 years after giving birth. The new findings are from a large observational study supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

High blood pressure is a risk factor for heart disease, the leading cause of death. This study identified a new, previously undefined risk group of postpartum women who are not currently recognized as being at high risk for future hypertension and cardiovascular disease because they did not develop HDP during pregnancy. HDP includes serious complications such as preeclampsia and gestational hypertension during pregnancy and are known to increase the risk of heart disease later in life. When the history of HDP was combined with women’s early pregnancy blood pressure patterns, these data together provide a new and improved tool for risk assessment.

A Safe Haven for Newborns, will host its annual fundraising golf event on Friday, May 16, 2025, on the manicured greens of the Red Tiger golf course at the Trump National Doral Golf Resort in Doral, Florida, with a one o’clock shotgun start.
