Cleveland Clinic Children’s First in the U.S. to Perform Pediatric Gallbladder Removal Using Magnetic-Assisted Surgical Technology
Magnetic-assisted approach expands minimally invasive options for pediatric patients
November 18, 2025- Cleveland Clinic Children’s is the first in the United States to perform a minimally invasive gallbladder removal (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) using a magnetic-assisted surgical technology that recently received FDA clearance for pediatric use.
The procedure was performed in early November by Miguel Guelfand, M.D., head of pediatric general and thoracic surgery at Cleveland Clinic Children’s. The patient has been recovering well following the procedure.
“Minimally invasive approaches are especially important in pediatric surgery,” said Dr. Guelfand. “Smaller incisions and less tissue disruption can mean less pain, faster recovery, and a better overall experience for young patients and their families. This milestone reflects our continued commitment to advancing surgical care for pediatric patients.”

Jupiter Medical Center Again Earns Highest Safety Rating from The Leapfrog Group
November 13, 2025 – Jupiter Medical Center (JMC) has once again earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade, the highest safety grade, from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety. This is the 14th consecutive “A” rating for the hospital, and JMC is also the only hospital in the Palm Beach and Martin County region to receive the “A” rating.
The Leapfrog Group evaluates over 2,600 general hospitals nationwide by assigning a grade from “A” to “F.” This assessment is based on more than 30 performance measures that reflect incidents such as errors, accidents, injuries, and infections, as well as the preventive systems that hospitals have implemented.
“Patient safety is central to our mission,” said Amit Rastogi, MD, MHCM, President and CEO of Jupiter Medical Center. “This recognition reflects the unwavering commitment of our entire team to deliver care that is not only exceptional but also the safest in our region.”

The independent not-for-profit health care system continues to make significant investments in state-of-the-art technology and the latest patient care models and procedures, resulting in the highest quality care in the region. Sylvester Cancer Tip Sheet for November 2025
ASH Annual Meeting
Sylvester Scientists Highlight Research at Hematology Annual Meeting
Sylvester physicians and other researchers will contribute to more than 150 oral and poster presentations at ASH 2025, the annual meeting and conference of the American Society of Hematology, Dec. 6-9, in Orlando, Florida. For abstracts, more information or to arrange interviews under embargo, email Sandy Van.
Breast Cancer
Targeting ‘Bodyguard’ Disruptors in Breast Cancer May Help Overcome Endocrine Resistance
In a preclinical study, Sylvester researchers have found that a new combination therapy for hormone-resistant, estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer can shrink tumors, reduce the number of cancer stem cells and reprogram the immune environment to be less supportive of cancer growth. Their findings, published this month in Science Translational Medicine, shed light on why endocrine resistance occurs and how it may be overcome by targeting cellular “bodyguards” in breast cancer cells.
Cervical Cancer
Sylvester, Others Collaborate to Eliminate Cervical Cancer
Sylvester, Florida’s three other NCI-designated cancer centers and the Florida Cancer Control Research Advisory Board have joined forces to lead a landmark, statewide initiative aimed at eliminating human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus responsible for nearly all cervical cancers. On Nov. 17, designated as “Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action,” the coalition launched a unified effort to remove barriers to prevention and ensure every woman in Florida has access to vaccination, screening and treatment.
Pancreatic Cancer
Nanoparticle Therapy Shrinks Tumors, Extends Survival in Preclinical Models
A new study has discovered that magnetoelectric nanoparticles – tiny, wirelessly controlled particles activated by magnetic fields – can both locate and destroy pancreatic tumors in preclinical models. This technology, developed by Sylvester scientists and University of Miami engineers in collaboration with Moffitt Cancer Center and Cellular Nanomed, offers a potentially new, minimally invasive way to treat one of the deadliest cancers. The study appeared this month in Advanced Science.

Palm Health Foundation’s “Brain Health Across the Lifespan” Campaign Connects All Ages and Communities
Train the Brain Neuroarts Event: Dr. Patricia Izbicki, Elaine Pomfrey, Brian Wood, Dr. Bama Lutes Deal
November 22 2025- West Palm Beach, Fla.– Palm Health Foundation’s October 2025 Train the Brain community health campaign, themed “Brain Health Across the Lifespan,” offered opportunities all month long, drawing nearly 300 community members to connect with local brain health champions, access practical, science-backed information, and take meaningful steps to support brain health for themselves, their families, and their neighbors – at every age and stage of life.
Train the Brain inspired local organizational collaborations from Belle Glade to Boynton Beach to offer a range of community programs to help residents of all ages recognize that taking care of the brain is just as important as taking care of the body. At “Arts on the Muck,” Glades community elders engaged in arts activities, memory boosting games, music, and movement during a football-themed afternoon. Schoolhouse Children’s Museum joined with Center for Child Counseling to bring the brain-boosting benefits of yoga, art making, and music to children, while their parents and caregivers learned practical, science-based tips to support brain health and emotional well-being at home.

Landmark Mayo Clinic study finds stenting reduces stroke risk in people with carotid artery narrowing
November 21, 2025- JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A major international study led by Mayo Clinic researchers and funded by the National Institutes of Health found that for people with severe carotid artery narrowing who haven’t experienced recent stroke symptoms, a minimally invasive procedure called carotid artery stenting, combined with intensive medical therapy, significantly lowered stroke risk compared with medical therapy alone. Traditional surgery (carotid endarterectomy) did not show the same benefit. The research is published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
The Carotid Revascularization and Medical Management for Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis Trial (CREST-2) is the largest study to date comparing current treatment approaches for this condition, caused by plaque buildup in the arteries supplying blood to the brain.

New genetic biomarker flags aggressive brain tumors
November 22 2025 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — Clinicians typically classify meningiomas — the most common type of brain tumor — into three grades, ranging from slow-growing to aggressive.
But a new multi-institutional study suggests that appearances may be deceiving. If a tumor shows activity in a gene called telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT), it tends to recur more quickly, even if it looks low-grade under the microscope.
The findings, published in Lancet Oncology, could significantly change how doctors diagnose and treat meningiomas.
“High TERT expression is strongly linked to faster disease progression,” says Gelareh Zadeh, M.D., Ph.D., a neurosurgeon at Mayo Clinic and senior author of the study. “This makes it a promising new biomarker for identifying patients who may be at greater risk of developing aggressive disease.”

CMS Empowers Patients and Boosts Transparency by Modernizing Hospital Payments
November 21, 2025 – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is improving the quality of care for Medicare beneficiaries while significantly reducing unnecessary spending and improving choices and hospital price transparency for Medicare beneficiaries. The calendar year (CY) 2026 Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) and Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) Payment System final rule (CMS-1834-FC) advances a series of patient-focused reforms that will modernize payments, expand access to care, enhance hospital accountability, and safeguard the Medicare Trust Funds from fraud, waste, and abuse.
“This final rule from CMS closes the loopholes hospitals exploit to hide real prices and advances President Trump’s demand for radical hospital price transparency,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “We are also confronting addiction head-on by expanding access to non-opioid treatments and implementing common-sense payment policies that make care more affordable and accessible for seniors.”
