ACHE of South Florida Member Spotlight: Brian Altschuler

“An environment conducive to learning and growing together.” As president of ACHE – American College of Healthcare Executives – that is how Brian Altschuler described his goals when taking over the presidency at the beginning of this year. And it’s an evolution of the same goals he had as president-elect in 2024. “As we move into ’25, my alignment of goals remains the same. I believe we keep evolving as an association and are providing key opportunities for healthcare leaders.”

Altschuler said he believes ACHE is the association that brings everyone together for the common good of healthcare in South Florida. “It creates a partnership of healthcare providers who come together to grow professionally, grow personally, and collaborate with each other; even though we’re competitors, it levels the environment to be able to network and share for the betterment of the community.”

In his everyday position as Vice President of Ancillary Operations at Boca Regional Hospital, Altschuler and his team have been working on a master facility plan that is scheduled to open in summer 2026. He said it is going to “revolutionize what we’re able to do for the community. We’re adding 20 new ORs, high-tech procedural areas, new critical care beds, new medical/surgical inpatient beds that will take the hospital to 100 percent private rooms, and new infrastructure that will allow the hospital to be on full generator power in all areas, which is very unusual, for between seven and nine days.”

Precision Oncology Summit to Feature Novel Therapies, Latest Cancer Treatment Advances

On Friday-Saturday, Feb. 7-8, 2025, the third annual Miami Cancer Institute Precision Oncology Summit will be held at the Loews Coral Gables Hotel, where attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the latest advances in lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, brain tumors, gastrointestinal cancers, biomarker testing and novel therapies to treat patients.

“This year’s symposium has been designed to provide experts with the opportunity to learn about the most recent advances in the treatment of solid tumors—including lung cancer, breast cancer, gastrointestinal tumors, genitourinary tumors, head and neck tumors, melanoma, sarcomas and brain tumors—by novel targeted agents and treatment combinations,” explained Manmeet Ahluwalia, M.D., MBA, FASCO, chief of medical oncology, chief scientific officer and deputy director, Fernandez Family Endowed Chair in Cancer Research at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute.

The summit will also include updates on evolving molecular-based system therapies.

“In the last decade, we have seen a transformative change in designer drugs that treat each patient based on the genetic changes that drive their cancer,” said Dr. Ahluwalia, who has led practice-changing research for developing new therapies for patients with primary brain tumors and brain metastases for more than a decade. “Every year, multiple new drugs are being approved at a faster pace than ever before.”

Broward Health and Business for the Arts Broward Celebrate Completion of Iconic Mural with Ribbon Cutting

December 30, 2024 – Broward Health and Business for the Arts Broward (BFA) celebrated the completion of the vibrant, iconic mural at Broward Health Medical Center with a ceremonial ribbon cutting attended by donors, artists and the leadership of Broward Health and Business for the Arts.

The mural, a key part of the ongoing beautification project for the Broward Health downtown medical campus, visually captures the spirit of Broward Health’s mission and vision, as well as the inspiration behind the brand, and showcases the beauty and creativity Fort Lauderdale offers. At the center of the mural, bold, bright letters proudly display a direct takeaway of the mission to offer “exceptional care, extraordinary compassion, everyday excellence.” Interlaced throughout the mural are organic elements that are present through the community and reflect Broward Health’s new brand, including hibiscus, blue skies, palms, water elements and much more.

AMERICAN HERITAGE SCHOOL HOSTS 25TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY AT BROWARD HEALTH MEDICAL CENTER

DECEMBER 30, 2024 – FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA—Pediatric cancer patients at Broward Health Medical Center were treated to a heartwarming holiday celebration thanks to the generous efforts of students from American Heritage Schools’ Pre-Medical Program.

“For 25 years they have brought joy to our pediatric cancer patients during the holidays,” said Manny Linares, CEO of Broward Health Medical Center. “Their kindness in offering gifts to cancer patients is a beacon of hope and a reminder of the profound impact that compassion and empathy can have.”

The festive gathering featured a special visit from Santa Claus, who delivered gifts from the children’s wish lists, which were personalized requests they had sent to the North Pole earlier this fall. In addition, the Florida Panthers mascots, Stanley C. Panther and Viktor E. Ratt, along with the Panthers cheerleaders, made a surprise appearance to spread joy and holiday cheer to young patients and their families.

Leading up to the event, the high school students transformed the hospital auditorium into a winter wonderland with sparkling Christmas ornaments and lights. They also organized fundraising efforts to fulfill the children’s holiday wishes, spending $500 on gifts for each patient. In total, they purchased more than 160 presents, such as a PS5, a kids’ camera and Disney character toys.

Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker Spearheads Local Nonprofits’ Efforts to Provide No Cost Cervical Cancer Diagnostic Screenings to Thousands of Underserved Women in South Florida

December 30, 2024 – As Cervical Cancer Awareness Month kicks off this January, Promise Fund, a South Florida based non-profit founded by Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, is racing to reach tens of thousands of women in Palm Beach, Broward and Martin Counties who are uninsured, under insured or have limited or no access to healthcare. The organization, founded in 2018, is dedicated to increasing survivorship from cervical cancer and breast cancer by providing guided support and access to screenings, as well as early detection, treatment, and beyond.

“The lack of early detection, particularly among women of color, is what we are finding here in our community where nearly 100,000 women are uninsured or do not have a medical home,” said Ambassador Brinker.

“Many women encounter barriers to screening and diagnosis primarily due to work commitments, childcare, lack of transportation, and fear of the costs,” she continued. “We co-locate our Promise Fund Women’s Health Program in Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), which provides access to Patient Navigation, pap smears to detect cervical cancer, mammography and breast ultrasounds and help women access treatment for cancer if needed. Plus, our dedicated patient navigators are there every step of the way—guiding women through the screening process and coordinating treatment if a cancer diagnosis is made—so no one faces it alone.”

NIH researchers discover novel class of anti-malaria antibodies

New antibodies could lead to next generation of interventions against malaria.

January 3, 2025- A novel class of antibodies that binds to a previously untargeted portion of the malaria parasite could lead to new prevention methods, according to a study from researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) published today in Science. The most potent of the new antibodies was found to provide protection against malaria parasites in an animal model. The researchers say antibodies in this class are particularly promising because they bind to regions of the malaria parasite not included in current malaria vaccines, providing a potential new tool for fighting this dangerous disease.

Brain structure differences are associated with early use of substances among adolescents

Many differences appeared to exist prior to any substance use, pointing to the role brain structure may play in substance use risk, NIH-supported study suggests.

December 30, 2024 – A study of nearly 10,000 adolescents funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)(link is external) has identified distinct differences in the brain structures of those who used substances before age 15 compared to those who did not. Many of these structural brain differences appeared to exist in childhood before any substance use, suggesting they may play a role in the risk of substance use initiation later in life, in tandem with genetic, environmental, and other neurological factors.
