BROWARD HEALTHPOINT AND COMMUNITY CARE PLAN UNVEIL NEW MATERNITY CARE & HEART COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER
Broward HealthPoint and Community Care Plan are proud to announce the grand opening of the Maternity Care Center & Heart Community Resource Center in Lauderdale Lakes. This collaboration aims to address health disparities in maternal care identified in central Broward County.
“Our collaboration stems from a shared commitment to addressing the critical health disparities in maternal care within central Broward County,” said Broward Health President and CEO Shane Strum. “By leveraging our resources and expertise, we are providing comprehensive maternal care services, ensuring that women can easily access prenatal care and support throughout their pregnancy journey.”
Broward HealthPoint, an affiliate of Broward Health, and Community Care Plan strategically positioned the new center to fulfill the unmet OB-GYN needs of women in
Lauderhill, Lauderdale Lakes, Sunrise and Oakland Park, particularly in the 33311 and 33313 zip codes. The data indicates that women in these areas have limited access to prenatal and postpartum care, which is a critical component of maternal health and positive birth outcomes.
Aiming to bridge the gap, the new center will provide convenient and reliable healthcare services to women in the Lauderdale Lakes area while putting more maternal and gynecological care providers on the ground locally so women can access prenatal care.

| BAPTIST HEALTH MIAMI CARDIAC & VASCULAR INSTITUTE NAMES CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON MEHRDAD GHOREISHI, M.D., CO-DIRECTOR OF AORTIC SURGERY AND MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF CARDIAC SURGERY RESEARCH
MIAMI, FL – May 9, 2024 – Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute has named board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon Mehrdad Ghoreishi, M.D., co-director of aortic surgery and medical director of cardiac surgery research.
Dr. Ghoreishi specializes in adult cardiac surgery and has a special clinical interest in aortic surgery. He is highly skilled in both open surgery and minimally invasive catheter-based treatments of aortic disease, including endovascular treatment of ascending aorta, aortic arch and aortic root. He has the most experience in the U.S. in the performance of normothermic (normal body temperature) aortic operations as well as endovascular aortic arch and aortic root repair.
Prior to joining Baptist Health, Dr. Ghoreishi was co-director for the Center for Aortic Disease at the University of Maryland Medical System and associate professor of cardiac surgery. As co-director, he led a team of professionals who developed less-invasive treatment options for patients with aortic disease and developed and performed the world’s first Endo-Bentall repair for aortic dissection. This groundbreaking approach allows for the replacement of part of the aorta and aortic valve using an endovascular technique, eliminating the need for traditional open-heart surgery, which carries a higher risk of complications and mortality.

STUDY WEIGHS TELEMEDICINE’S IMPACT ON MEDICARE USE, SPENDING, AND QUALITY
By Jarrod Fowler, MHA, FMA Director of Health Care Policy and Innovation
A recent study published in Health Affairs compared traditional Medicare patients who were part of health systems that used more telemedicine services relative to those that used fewer. The study compared changes between 2019 and 2021-2022 between these groups in terms of utilization, cost, and quality between 2019 and 2021-22. The study found:
Patients with high telemedicine use had increases for drug adherence for metformin and statins. There were no differences in the pap tests, colonoscopies, or mammograms. No significant changes in imaging services or laboratory tests were observed.
Patients in high-telemedicine health systems exhibited increased spending with respect to inpatient admissions and pharmaceuticals. This was partially offset by decreases in outpatient hospital spending, particularly facility fees and outpatient hospital visits.
The authors concluded by noting, “Given the small improvements in access and quality (in particular for chronic disease medications), combined with modest increases in spending along with patients’ and clinicians’ preferences, we believe that it will be difficult to justify a return to restricting telemedicine payment in Medicare.”

The following is a summary of the latest actions by the Board of Medicine and Board of Osteopathic Medicine, the Board of Nursing, and the Agency for Health Care Administration.

LEE HEALTH AND THE HEALTHY START COALITION OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA TO PROVIDE OVER 500 CAR SEATS TO SOUTHWEST FLORIDA FAMILIES IN NEED
May 9, 2024 — Lee Health and the Healthy Start Coalition of Southwest Florida have collaborated to provide over 500 car seats to families in need in Southwest Florida. The joint effort will help alleviate the shortage of car seats in the region, with the primary goal of ensuring safe car seat practices throughout the community.
The car seats will be available at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida and through various distribution channels, including local outreach programs. Golisano Children’s Hospital is located at 9981 S. Healthpark Dr., Fort Myers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car seats are estimated to reduce the risk of fatal injury in a passenger car by 71% for infants (younger than one-year-old) and by 54% for toddlers (one to four years old).
In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, numerous families lost their vehicles, many of which contained essential car seats for their children. The sudden surge in demand for replacement car seats swiftly depleted available funding sources and resources.
“We hope this donation will make a difference in a lot of families’ lives and help keep their children safe. Creating easy access to car seats is one of the best ways to ensure that every family has access to the necessary resources needed to keep their children protected,” said coordinator for Safe Kids Southwest Florida Julie Noble. “We are grateful to collaborate with the Healthy Start Coalition to provide education on car seat safety and these more than 500 car seats to help alleviate the urgent requirement in the community.”

SALUSCARE EXPANDS DETOX SERVICES TO REFLECT THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY
May 10, 2024 – SalusCare has expanded its detoxification services to provide an individualized and supportive approach for those addicted to methamphetamines, kratom, molly, ecstasy and cocaine along with its existing detox treatments for benzodiazepines, opioids and alcohol. The list of substances for detoxification treatment at SalusCare has expanded to meet treatments needed in the community and incorporates American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) protocols.
“We found there were many folks who may need a detox level of care that were using other substances,” said Jessica Plazewski, SalusCare vice president and chief operating officer. “Because of this need, we worked to implement a medical protocol to treat these substances we are seeing as a rising problem in the community.”
Kratom is a legal herbal substance that can produce opioid and stimulant side effects, whose use is on the rise because it is easy to get. When combined with alcohol or other drugs, dangerous side effects can occur. Molly and ecstasy are different forms of the same psychoactive drug that is often combined with other drugs and known as the “club drug.” Methamphetamine, a highly addictive stimulant that affects the central nervous system, is a powder that is easily dissolved in water or alcohol. Cocaine is a euphoria-producing simulant drug. Withdrawing from many of these substances is intense, and a medical detox program is the safest way to treat symptoms and remove drugs from the body as steps to substance use disorder treatment.

CARDIAC SURGERY PATIENTS WITH ELEVATED STROKE RISK MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR NEW CLINICAL TRIAL AT SMH
May 9, 2024 – Sarasota Memorial is one of up to 250 research sites participating in a multi-center, multi-national clinical trial to determine whether sealing a small, seemingly unnecessary sac in the heart during routine cardiac surgery can prevent strokes in some patients.
Cardiac specialists have been closing the finger-like pouch called the left atrial appendage (LAA) for years to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (Afib). Devices such as the FDA-cleared AtriClip and LAA closure devices have demonstrated to be simple, effective, and low risk additions to routine cardiac procedures for patients with Afib.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the ‘Left Atrial Appendage Exclusion for Prophylactic Stroke Prevention (LeAAPS)’ trial to determine if implanting the AtriCure AtriClip® LAA exclusion system offers protection against ischemic stroke or systemic embolism in patients who do not have Afib, but are at risk for developing Afib.

BIDEN-HARRIS ADMINISTRATION ACTS TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO KIDNEY TRANSPLANTS
Proposed model would break down silos of care in kidney transplant process, address disparities, improve access, and promote health equity
May 9, 2024 – Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), is announcing the Increasing Organ Transplant Access (IOTA) Model. The proposed model, which would be implemented by the CMS Innovation Center, aims to increase access to kidney transplants for all people living with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), improve the quality of care for people seeking kidney transplants, reduce disparities among individuals undergoing the process to receive a kidney transplant, and increase the efficiency and capability of transplant hospitals selected to participate. This proposed model would build on the Biden-Harris Administration’s priority of improving the kidney transplant system and the collaborative efforts between CMS and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to increase organ donation and improve clinical outcomes, system improvement, quality measurement, transparency, and regulatory oversight.
“The organ transplant industry, like every other part of society, is not immune to racial inequities,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. “Black Americans disproportionately struggle with life-threatening kidney disease, yet they receive a smaller percentage of kidney transplants. The Biden-Harris Administration is taking concrete steps to remove racial bias when calculating wait times and rooting out profiteering and inequity in the transplant process.”

FASTER APPROACH FOR STARTING EXTENDED-RELEASE NALTREXONE TO TREAT OPIOID USE DISORDER SHOWN EFFECTIVE
NIH-supported clinical trial addresses important barrier to opioid use disorder treatment.
May 8, 2024 – Starting people with opioid use disorder on extended-release, injectable naltrexone (XR-naltrexone) within five to seven days of seeking treatment is more effective than the standard treatment method of starting within 10-15 days, but requires closer medical supervision, according to results from a clinical trial(link is external) supported by the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Published in JAMA Network Open, the findings suggest that this rapid treatment protocol could make XR-naltrexone more viable as a treatment option for opioid use disorder, which continues to take lives at an alarming rate.
“When someone is ready to seek treatment for opioid use disorder, it is crucial that they receive it as quickly as possible,” said Nora Volkow, M.D., NIDA director. “This study paves the way for more timely care with one of the three medications for opioid use disorder we have available, better supporting people in their ability to choose the treatment option that will work best for them.”

MORE THAN 321,000 U.S. CHILDREN LOST A PARENT TO DRUG OVERDOSE FROM 2011 TO 2021
Federal study shows lives lost from overdose crisis are felt across generations, emphasizing need to include children and families in support.
May 8, 2024 – An estimated 321,566 children in the United States lost a parent to drug overdose from 2011 to 2021, according to a study(link is external) published in JAMA Psychiatry. The rate of children who experienced this loss more than doubled during this period, from approximately 27 to 63 children per 100,000. The highest number of affected children were those with non-Hispanic white parents, but communities of color and tribal communities were disproportionately affected. The study was a collaborative effort led by researchers at the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Children with non-Hispanic American Indian/Alaska Native parents consistently experienced the highest rate of loss of a parent from overdose from 2011 to 2021 – with 187 per 100,000 children affected in this group in 2021, more than double the rate among non-Hispanic white children (76.5 per 100,000) and among non-Hispanic Black children (73 per 100,000). While the number of affected children increased from 2011 to 2021 across all racial and ethnic populations, children with young non-Hispanic Black parents (18 to 25 years old) experienced the highest – roughly 24% – increase in rate of loss every year. Overall, children lost more fathers than mothers (192,459 compared to 129,107 children) during this period.
