Dr. Ravenna brings an integrated, patient-centered approach to care, drawing on his broad clinical background and subspecialty fellowship training in neuro-ophthalmology. His clinical interests include optic neuropathies, optic neuritis, headache disorders and inflammatory and demyelinating conditions that affect visual pathways. He also has a particular interest in idiopathic intracranial hypertension, emphasizing early diagnosis, prevention of vision loss and long-term neurologic and ocular health.

Hospital Board Approves Plan for Outpatient Endoscopy Center next to SMH-Venice Campus
Feb. 9, 2026 – Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is moving forward with plans to open a new endoscopy and digestive health center next to its Venice hospital campus.
The Sarasota County Public Hospital Board recently approved plans for the $12 million outpatient center, which will be located in a leased facility that is being developed contiguous to the SMH-Venice campus at 2695 Curry Lane, Nokomis.
Flagship Healthcare Properties is developing a three-story, 54,000-square-foot medical office building on the vacant parcel adjacent to the Venice hospital campus. Sarasota Memorial signed a lease to occupy at least one floor with outpatient endoscopy services.
“We are looking forward to opening the outpatient center and expanding capacity as soon as possible,” said SMH-Venice President Sharon Roush. “The need for screenings, both routine outpatient and inpatient, has been increasing every year. Expanding our capacity will reduce wait times and the amount of time from screening to diagnosis, ensuring timely care for all of our patients.”

FHA Workforce Report: Florida Hospital Strengthening and Supporting Florida’s Health Care Workforce
With the aging baby boomer generation, the demand on healthcare and hospital services is ever-increasing in the Sunshine State.
January 21, 20926 – A recently released Florida Hospital Association report documents significant strides hospitals have made to dramatically decrease vacancy and turnover rates among nurses and allied health professionals. Through numerous initiatives and investments, Florida’s hospitals have added 64,900 jobs since 2020.
Since 2022, registered nurse vacancy rates have decreased by 52% and turnover rates are down by 47%,demonstratingthe impact of targeted recruitment and retention strategies. Allied health professions have experienced similar gains during the same timeframe, with vacancy rates dropping to 21% and turnover rates being cut nearly in half, though critical gaps remain.
The Florida Hospital Association’s report follows Governor Ron DeSantis’ announcement of Florida’s $485 million investment in nursing education programs, underscoring the Sunshine State’s commitment to strengthening our health care workforce. Since the LINE program’s introduction in 2022, 157 Florida hospitals have participated with matching funds to support nursing education.
These gains come as Florida’s population grows and retirees relocate to our state, driving increased demand for health care services across the state. Florida is currently home to more than 4.5 million residents aged 65 and older. By 2036, projections estimate this demographic will reach 6.7 million, accounting for 26% of the state’s population. Meeting this growing demand requires a strong, resilient health care workforce, even as many health care workers themselves approach retirement.

Sarasota Memorial CIO Pam Ramhofer Receives Florida’s Prestigious ORBIE Award
FEBRUARY 9, 2026 – Pamela Ramhofer, chief information officer at Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, was recognized with Florida’s prestigious ORBIE Award on Feb. 6. She was one of six leading CIOs to win the prestigious leadership award for industry innovation and impact.

The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) applauds the enactment of the Accelerating Kids’ Access to Care Act. This bipartisan law removes longstanding administrative barriers that have delayed access to out-of-state specialty care for children with complex or congenital medical conditions.

Mayo Clinic study finds chemotherapy before surgery improves survival in early-stage pancreatic cancer
FEBRUARY 9, 2026 — A Mayo Clinic study is providing new insights into how treatment sequence can affect survival in patients with early-stage pancreatic cancer, suggesting that many patients may benefit from receiving chemotherapy before surgery.
The findings, published in the JNCCN—Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, were based on more than 1,400 patients treated across Mayo Clinic’s campuses in Minnesota, Arizona and Florida. Researchers found that when pancreatic tumors were in contact with the superior mesenteric vein — a major blood vessel by the pancreas — patients who underwent surgery first experienced reduced survival rates. In contrast, patients who received chemotherapy before surgery had similar survival outcomes to those whose tumors were not touching the vein.
“Many patients with early-stage pancreatic cancer undergo surgery first because it is historically believed to be the best chance for cure,” says Zhi Ven Fong, M.D., Dr.PH., surgical oncologist at Mayo Clinic in Arizona and co-senior author of the study. “Our findings suggest that chemotherapy first, even in cases thought to be more straightforward, provides patients with the best opportunity for long-term survival.”
Pancreatic cancer is notoriously aggressive, and progress over the past decade to increase patient survival has been limited. Chemotherapy before surgery, called neoadjuvant chemotherapy, aims to shrink the tumor and target cancer cells that may have spread. This approach increases the chance of complete tumor removal during an operation and improves survival outcomes.

NIH halts arm of clinical trial evaluating a potential stroke treatment
Study found low-dose rivaroxaban to be unsafe and ineffective compared to standard of care.
FEBRUARY 10, 2026 – The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has stopped an investigational treatment arm of the Comparison of Anti-coagulation and Anti-platelet Therapies for Intracranial Vascular Atherostenosis (CAPTIVA) study, following a regular review by the Data Safety and Monitoring Board (DSMB). The DSMB is an independent group of experts that regularly check if the study is safe. NIH’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the trial’s funder, accepted the DSMB recommendation that CAPTIVA discontinue the low-dose rivaroxaban arm of the trial due to an increase in safety events and evidence of futility, a pre-specified stopping point to enable the study to end if early results showed the treatment is unlikely to help people. Rivaroxaban is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved anticoagulant medication used to treat or prevent blood clots. All study sites that have active participants randomized to the discontinued arm have received instructions for drug discontinuation. Study participants who have completed their evaluation of the discontinued arm will be contacted by the site where they received treatment. Participant safety remains NIH’s top priority.
The CAPTIVA study is a large, two-stage, double-blind randomized trial in participants age 30 and older with a stroke attributed to 70-99% narrowing, or stenosis, of a major intracranial artery. The study is testing whether either of two new treatments works better than the current treatment to prevent another stroke. The study, part of NIH’s StrokeNet, is in the midst of enrolling and evaluating up to 1,683 volunteers at over 100 study sites over a four-year period. Participants were randomized 1:1:1 to one year of treatment with:
-Ticagrelor (180 mg loading dose, then 90 mg twice daily) plus aspirin (81 mg daily)
-Low-dose rivaroxaban (2.5 mg twice daily) plus aspirin (81 mg daily)
-Clopidogrel (600 mg loading dose, then 75 mg daily) plus aspirin (81 mg daily)
In addition, participants will receive intensive risk factor management and lifestyle coaching. They will be evaluated at one month, four months, eight months, and one year after randomization into one of the study arms. At these intervals, participants will have their blood pressure checked, risk factors optimized and will be assessed for study outcomes.

NIH: Cognitive speed training over weeks may delay the diagnosis of dementia over decades
NIH-funded effort finds positive outcomes with strategies that engaged mostly unconscious, rather than conscious, thinking.
FEBRUARY 10, 2026 – A National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded study that followed adults age 65 and older over 20 years has linked a specific cognitive training regimen to reduced diagnoses of Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD). While the authors assessed three different kinds of training, only one, which challenged participants with rapid object detection tasks, was associated with a 25% lower rate of dementia diagnosis, as indicated by Medicare claims data.
“This study shows that simple brain training, done for just weeks, may help people stay mentally healthy for years longer,” said NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, M.D., Ph.D. “That’s a powerful idea — that practical, affordable tools could help delay dementia and help older adults keep their independence and quality of life.”
“The findings reported here suggest that moderate cognitive training could delay the onset of dementia over subsequent years. There is still more research to be done to determine about how this works, but this promising lead may move the field further into developing effective interventions to delay or prevent onset of dementia,” said Richard Hodes, M.D., director of the NIH’s National Institute on Aging (NIA), which funded this research.
As part of a now completed clinical trial, participants were randomized into cognitive training sessions, each lasting 60–75 minutes twice a week, over five to six weeks in 1999. Then, half of the participants were randomized into another round of training 11 and 35 months later. The study authors evaluated the effect of each training regimen by analyzing Medicare data collected as recently as 2019 from 2,021 study participants.

NIH scientists develop “digital twin” of eye cells to understand and treat age-related macular degeneration
Breakthrough modeling technology reveals how cells lose their organization in leading cause of vision loss.
FEBRUARY 10. 2026 – National Institutes of Health (NIH) researchers have developed a digital replica of crucial eye cells, providing a new tool for studying how the cells organize themselves when they are healthy and affected by diseases. The platform opens a new door for therapeutic discovery for blinding diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of vision loss in people over 50.
“This work represents the first ever subcellular resolution digital twin of a differentiated human primary cell, demonstrating how the eye is an ideal proving ground for developing methods that could be used more generally in biomedical research,” Kapil Bharti, Ph.D., scientific director at the NIH’s National Eye Institute (NEI).
The researchers created a highly detailed, 3D data-driven digital twin of a retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells, which perform vital recycling and supportive roles to light-sensing photoreceptors in the retina. In diseases such as AMD, RPE cells die, which eventually leads to the death of photoreceptor cells, causing loss of vision.
