VITAS® Healthcare and Miami Dade College Name Spring LPN Scholarship Recipients
February 3, 2026 – Florida hospice provider VITAS Healthcare, in partnership with Miami Dade College (MDC), recognized two Spring 2025 nursing scholarship recipients during a special ceremony on January 22nd, celebrating both second-career professionals entering the nursing field.
The scholarship recipients, former police officer Yvonne Linen Garcia and former schoolteacher Todra Norris, are pursuing nursing careers inspired by personal experiences with caregiving and end-of-life care. Both were selected by VITAS through the Miami Dade College LPN Scholarship, which supports students committed to compassionate, patient-centered care.
“Working with dying patients is not about repair work; it is about honoring someone, relieving suffering and finding space for meaning, memory and peace,” said Garcia, reflecting on her calling to hospice nursing.
Norris shared a similar motivation, stating, “What draws me to this field is the chance to bring comfort and peace to patients and families during a time when kindness truly makes a difference.”
The VITAS-funded Miami Dade College LPN Scholarship is designed to remove financial barriers to nursing education while helping address the growing national demand for nurses. Students pursuing a licensed practical nursing degree at MDC apply by submitting a hospice-related short essay and committing to two years of employment with VITAS.
By supporting second-career students, the program strengthens the healthcare workforce with individuals who bring life experience, empathy and a strong sense of purpose to patient care.

The Eugene M. and Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute Names Robert H. Press, M.D., Clinical Director of Proton Therapy
February 2, 2026 – Board-certified radiation oncologist Robert H. Press, M.D., has joined the Eugene M. and Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health, at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, and will serve as clinical director of proton therapy. He specializes in treating central nervous system tumors, head and neck cancers and thoracic malignancies.
Dr. Press comes to Lynn Cancer Institute from Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute, where he was an attending physician and head of the thoracic service line in the Department of Radiation Oncology. Prior to joining Baptist Health in 2023, he was a radiation oncologist at New York Proton Center, serving as the disease site lead for both central nervous system tumors and head and neck cancers. During this time, he also served as an assistant clinical professor at Mt. Sinai Hospital and a visiting investigator for the Department of Radiation Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Listening to the Warning Signs: How Heart Surgery at Broward Health Changed an Oakland Park Man’s Life
February 2, 2026- A healthy and energetic man who exercised five to six times a week, Oakland Park resident and psychotherapist Matthew Ghezzi couldn’t understand why, in his mid-50s, he was losing vitality.
For more than a year, he experienced fatigue and edema, a type of fluid retention in his legs. Working with his clients and keeping his spirits up took all his energy. Other interests and relationships suffered.
At first, his symptoms were thought to be a result of hypothyroidism. Then a severe systolic heart murmur was identified at a primary care appointment, and eventually, he was diagnosed with aortic valve regurgitation.
“Aortic valve regurgitation occurs when the aortic valve doesn’t close properly,” said Alexander Justicz, M.D., a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon with the Broward Health Physician Group. “This causes blood to leak backward into the left ventricle of the heart and means the heart must work harder. Matthew’s condition was advanced to the point that he needed surgery.”

Since Sarasota Memorial formed its Pregnancy Care Team last summer, the OB nurse navigators have helped hundreds of local women, including Alana Draper who gave birth last year after accessing prenatal care with support of the SMH team. February 2, 2026 – Sarasota Memorial Health Care System (SMH) opened a new Pregnancy and Wellness Center today to ensure that every expecting mother, regardless of her medical or financial circumstances, has access to compassionate support and expert prenatal care.
High-risk and underinsured patients, in particular, often struggle to find appropriate medical support during pregnancy. The center is designed to help close the gap, as a nationwide shortage of obstetricians delivering babies deepens, and hospitals increasingly close their labor and delivery (L&D) units due to financial strains and staffing issues. Reports indicate that as many as 86% of rural Florida hospitals have stopped delivering babies, creating “maternity care deserts” and forcing women to travel long distances for care, which increases health risks.

Insights, an annual juried art exhibition produced by the Ryan Licht Sang Bipolar Foundation, is designed to bring awareness and break down ongoing stigma around the disease. Selected from more than 200 national submissions, these works were all created by individuals living with bipolar disorder.
Much of the pain of bipolar disorder is invisible to the outside world, hidden behind the outward appearance of physical health. But it is a serious, complex and debilitating mental illness without a cure – and those living with the condition often suffer in silence.
