BREAKTHROUGHS IN CANCER TREATMENT AND DETECTION
By Manmeet Ahluwalia, M.D., MBA, FASCO
Over the past two decades, remarkable advancements in cancer treatment have dramatically improved survival rates for patients battling the disease. Breakthroughs in personalized medicine, targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and innovative detection techniques are at the forefront of this progress.
Personalized Medicine: One of the most significant advancements in oncology is the concept of personalized medicine. This approach tailors cancer treatments to an individual’s unique genetic and molecular profile. By analyzing a patient’s DNA, RNA, and protein profiles, healthcare professionals can identify specific genetic mutations or biomarkers driving cancer development. This “molecular fingerprint” guides clinicians in optimizing treatments for each patient, aiming to maximize treatment effectiveness while minimizing side effects commonly associated with one-size-fits-all approaches.

TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL IS NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED FOR ITS COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING HIGH-QUALITY STROKE CARE
The American Heart Association has awarded Tampa General Hospital the Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for proven dedication to ensuring all stroke patients have access to best practices and lifesaving care.
October 12, 2023 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for its consistency in implementing proven care protocols and research to provide advanced stroke care to patients.
Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.

FIRST U.S. PATIENTS UNDERGO INNOVATIVE BRAIN CANCER TREATMENT IN NEW CLINICAL TRIAL AT HCA HEALTHCARE’S JOHNSTON-WILLIS HOSPITAL
HCA Healthcare Research Institute hosts new clinical trial using noninvasive focused ultrasound in combination with systemic immunotherapy to treat brain metastases
October 12, 2023 — HCA Healthcare’s Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, is the first hospital in the United States to provide treatment in a new clinical trial for patients with brain metastases from lung cancer. This clinical trial, conducted by HCA Healthcare Research Institute and sponsored by Insightec, a global healthcare company pioneering the use of focused ultrasound technology, investigates the benefit of combining noninvasive focused ultrasound with systemic immunotherapy as an alternative.
Johnston-Willis Hospital is hosting the trial and has already enrolled the first two U.S. patients who are currently undergoing a total of six treatment cycles each. The patients have metastatic brain cancer, which originated from cancer cells spreading to the brain from the primary tumor in their lungs. The new treatment uses Insightec’s system to open the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which defends the brain against harmful substances, but also prevents critical medications from being delivered. By opening the BBB, non-small cell lung cancer medications may reach and target the critical lesions in the brain.
