The MV Hondius Hantavirus Outbreak—Lessons for Pandemic Preparedness

The Andes hantavirus outbreak aboard the expedition vessel MV Hondius is likely to remain limited. Yet the fragmented international response reveals a deeper vulnerability in global health preparedness: despite major reforms after COVID-19, pandemic preparedness remains weakest not in scientific capability, but in operational authority and coordination across jurisdiction
A Clinically Serious but Bounded Outbreak
The epidemiological timeline of the hantavirus outbreak aboard the Dutch-flagged Hondius underscores critical delays in detection and international notification. Following an April 1, 2026, departure from Ushuaia, Argentina, the index fatality occurred on April 11. The body remained onboard for 13 days until disembarkation at Saint Helena on April 24, following Hondius’ arrival on April 22, alongside a symptomatic spouse who subsequently traveled via commercial aircraft to Johannesburg, South Africa, dying on April 26. Formal notification of the cluster to the World Health Organization (WHO) by the UK did not occur until May 2—three weeks after the initial death—by which time 34 passengers and crew had already dispersed internationally.1 The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a Health Alert Network advisory on May 8, 6 days after the WHO notification.2 Following the vessel’s arrival in Tenerife, Spain, on May 10, repatriation of all passengers was completed by May 11. As of May 20, the European CDC reported 10 cases (8 laboratory confirmed, 2 probable) and 3 deaths associated with the voyage (Figure).3
Per the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, as of May 20, 2026, there have been 10 cases (8 confirmed, 2 probable), 3 deaths, a 9-country IHR response, and a 42-day surveillance window; there have been no new cases since May 13, 2026.

HCA FLORIDA RAULERSON HOSPITAL ANNOUNCES $21M EMERGENCY ROOM EXPANSION
May 27, 2026 – HCA Florida Raulerson Hospital, part of HCA Florida Healthcare, announces plans to expand its emergency department to better meet the growing needs of the Okeechobee community.
Construction on the more than $21 million project is expected to begin in late summer 2026, with completion anticipated near the end of 2027.
The expansion will increase the number of emergency room beds from 14 to 25, enhancing access to care and improving patient flow in one of the busiest emergency departments in the HCA Healthcare system for its size. The department cared for more than 30,000 patients in both 2024 and 2025.
“This expansion marks an important milestone for HCA Florida Raulerson Hospital as we continue to grow alongside our community,” said Alex Masmela, chief executive officer of HCA Florida Raulerson Hospital. “By increasing capacity and modernizing our emergency department, we are strengthening our ability to deliver timely, high-quality care close to home.”
The project includes approximately 6,000 square feet of new emergency department space and features:
-11 additional patient care beds
-Including 2 trauma beds and 2 behavioral health beds
-An expanded waiting area for patients and families
-An enlarged colleague breakroom
Once completed, the expanded emergency department is expected to require additional physicians, nurses and support personnel. The project also reinforces the hospital’s collaboration with local EMS, ambulance and air medical teams to enhance both daily operations and emergency response capabilities.

Focused Ultrasound Available at UHealth for Patients with Tremor Disorders
May 23, 2026- UHealth’s neurosurgery program is offering an incisionless treatment option for people living with medication‑refractory essential tremor and certain forms of Parkinson’s disease. Focused ultrasound uses precisely targeted sound waves to treat tremor without open surgery, implanted hardware or an overnight hospital stay.
The procedure is performed inside an MRI scanner, allowing physicians to target specific areas of the brain with a high degree of accuracy. The technology concentrates more than 1,000 ultrasound beams on a single point, raising the temperature just enough to disrupt the abnormal circuitry responsible for tremor. For many patients, the result can be rapid symptom relief and a quicker return home.
“This is completely done in an MRI, so there’s no operating room,” said Jonathan Jagid, M.D., a Miller School professor of clinical neurological surgery. “Typically, patients would go home the same day. With surgery, patients usually have to spend at least a night in the hospital.”

Carnegie Mellon University and Cleveland Clinic Develop AI System to Interpret Cardiac MRI Scans with Enhanced Accuracy
Trained on more than 13,000 patient studies, novel system significantly outperforms existing models by up to 35%
May 21, 2026- A team of researchers from Carnegie Mellon University, in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic’s Cardiovascular Innovation Research Center, has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system capable of interpreting some of the most complex heart scans in medicine – cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – without the need for manually labeled training data.
The novel system, called CMR-CLIP, is designed to interpret cardiac MRI scans by connecting moving images of the heart with corresponding clinical radiology reports. In testing, it significantly outperformed general-purpose AI models, in some cases by more than 35%. The system also showed strong potential for improving cardiac imaging analysis, case retrieval and clinical decision support.
“This work demonstrates that domain-specific foundation models can significantly outperform general-purpose AI systems in specialized clinical applications,” said Ding Zhao, associate professor in Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and co-principal investigator on the study. “By designing models that reflect the structure and complexity of cardiac MRI data, rather than adapting generic image models, we can unlock new levels of performance and clinical utility.”

What is External Beam Radiation Therapy?
Radiation Therapy, more formally defined as External Beam Radiation Therapy, or EBRT, is the use of targeted, high-energy radiation beams to destroy cancer cells in the body, while sparing surrounding tissue.
Non-invasive and low risk but still highly effective, it is a rapidly growing field in modern oncology, with technological advancements that enable radiation oncologists to wield gamma rays like a scalpel.
At the Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute, oncologists have access to as many as six different types of radiation therapy, each with its own strengths and applications. These include:

UM: Oral Medication Proves Effective for Low Platelets Due to Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy can be a razor’s edge kind of treatment.
May 21, 2026 – The medications’ ability to kill cancer cells often blurs into toxicity that affects healthy tissues as well. If these toxic side effects are strong enough, they can lead to delays in necessary treatment, giving the cancer time to grow and even acquire resistance to chemotherapy.
One such common side effect of chemotherapy is low blood platelet counts, also called chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia (CIT). Chemotherapy suppresses all our blood cells: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Until now, physicians have had effective treatments to overcome low red and white blood cells, but not low platelets. Platelets are a type of blood cell that helps us form clots after injuries. Patients with low platelets are at risk of excessive, life-threatening bleeding after even minor injuries.
Results from a clinical trial led by researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and Massachusetts General Hospital point to a potential new treatment for CIT. The oral medication avatrombopag is a type of thrombopoietin receptor agonist. This medication is FDA-approved to treat thrombocytopenia in patients with liver disease, but its effectiveness for CIT remained unclear until now.
Gerald Soff, M.D., chief of classical hematology at Sylvester, led a phase 2 clinical trial of avatrombopag, with a goal to treat 40 patients with gastrointestinal cancers who were experiencing ongoing CIT. The drug proved so effective, however, that Dr. Soff and his colleagues were able to stop the trial at their interim analysis of 23 patients. Dr. Soff will present these results at the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago.

Public urged to recognize sepsis signs following death of NASCAR’s Kyle Busch

May 27, 2026 – In the wake of the sudden and heartbreaking death of NASCAR champion Kyle Busch from complications related to sepsis following severe pneumonia, HCA Florida Brandon Hospital is urging the public to learn the warning signs of sepsis and seek emergency medical care when symptoms appear. Busch’s death at age 41 has brought national attention to the dangerous reality that sepsis can affect anyone, including otherwise healthy and active individuals.
According to reports, Busch developed severe pneumonia that progressed into sepsis, a life-threatening medical emergency that occurs when the body’s response to an infection damages its own tissues and organs.
“Sepsis can progress rapidly and become life-threatening within hours,” said Dr. Sergio Martinez, associate medical director of the emergency room at Brandon Hospital. “Many people mistake the early symptoms for the flu, exhaustion or a common infection, but when symptoms worsen quickly or someone becomes confused, short of breath or extremely ill, it’s critical to seek emergency medical care immediately. Early recognition and treatment save lives.”
Sepsis develops as a complication of an infection, most commonly from pneumonia, urinary tract infections, abdominal infections or skin infections. While older adults and people with chronic medical conditions are at higher risk, sepsis can impact people of any age.

Advent Health: New study to examine pairing GLP-1 medication with exercise to reduce Alzheimer’s disease risk
AdventHealth researcher awarded state grant to explore a new prevention approach aimed at protecting memory, independence and quality of life.
May 26, 2026- — As Alzheimer’s disease continues to impact millions of individuals and families, researchers at AdventHealth are advancing new ways to help people maintain memory, independence and overall well-being as they age.
That effort is now supported by a $350,000 grant from the Florida Department of Health, awarded to Kirk Erickson, Ph.D., to lead a study examining whether combining medication and exercise can lower the risk of cognitive decline.
The study — known as GLP-1 and Activity Interventions for Neuroprotection (GAIN) — will examine whether pairing a GLP-1 receptor agonist, tirzepatide, commonly used to treat obesity and Type 2 diabetes, with regular exercise can produce greater benefits for cognitive function and brain health than exercise alone.
Obesity, diabetes and physical inactivity are among the strongest risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease — but they’re also modifiable, creating an important opportunity to protect brain health.
“Alzheimer’s disease affects more than memory. It impacts independence, identity and connection to others,” Erickson said. “This research takes a whole-person approach, exploring how staying physically active and managing overall health can help people remain mentally sharp and more in control as they age.”
Exercise is already one of the most effective and accessible ways to support brain health, improving blood flow, metabolism and the growth of brain cells. At the same time, GLP-1 medications have shown early promise in protecting brain function and reducing dementia risk.
While each has shown promise independently, researchers do not yet fully understand how they may work together — a key question the GAIN study aims to answer.
The GAIN study will test whether combining the two interventions creates a greater, potentially synergistic effect on memory and brain health.

Tampa General Hospital Opens TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center
The program provides comprehensive, physician-supervised medical care for patients with obesity in the Palm Beaches.
May 18, 2026– Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has launched a new clinic, TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center, to deliver comprehensive, physician-supervised medical care for adults with obesity in the Palm Beaches and on the Treasure Coast. The center is supported by the advanced clinical expertise and coordinated services of Tampa General Hospital, Florida’s premier academic health system.
Dr. David B. Schwimmer, a gastroenterologist board certified in obesity medicine, will serve as medical director and supervise the clinic, which will be located in Palm Beach Gardens and West Palm Beach.
The TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center serves adults age 18 and older who meet one or more of the following criteria:

May 27, 2026 – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is responding to an outbreak of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. The overall risk to the American public and travelers remains low, but as with other high-consequence infectious diseases, clinicians are often the first to diagnose an outbreak. During this COCA Call, learn more about this outbreak, the history and ecology of Bundibugyo virus, what U.S. clinicians should know about preparing for, diagnosing, and managing patients with suspect or confirmed Ebola disease, and how to prevent Ebola viruses from spreading.
