FAU RECEIVES $11.5 MILLION GIFT TO COMBAT LIFE-THREATENING ILLNESS, AMYLOIDOSIS
Boca Raton philanthropists Ann and John Wood of the FairfaxWood Scholarship Foundation
Gift Establishes FairfaxWood Health & Innovation Initiative and Endowed FairfaxWood Chair of Clinical Neurosciences
July 13, 2023– Currently, there is no cure for amyloidosis, a life-threatening disease that can be present throughout the body, including the heart, kidneys, liver and brain. The most common localized form of amyloidosis, which is seen significantly more often, is in the brain. Cerebral amyloidosis, when symptomatic, usually manifests in one of two ways: in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and in brain bleeds, which have consequences such as a stroke.
Because amyloidosis does not affect a specific organ, unraveling the underlying cause of amyloid fibril creation – a hallmark of this disease – is complex and challenging.
A monumental $11.5 million gift from Boca Raton philanthropists Ann and John Wood of the FairfaxWood Scholarship Foundation, will enable Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine to create a game-changing infrastructure that will combat amyloidosis using a collaborative, whole-body approach.

July 6, 2023 – As part of its commitment to connecting the Palm Beach County and Treasure Coast communities to cutting-edge care, Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has welcomed a Palm Beach County-based surgeon to the TGH Heart & Vascular Institute.
Amy Mostafavi, MD, FACS, is board-certified in general and vascular surgery, and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. She can perform open surgery, as well as laparoscopic and endovascular procedures (less invasive methods to treat problems affecting the blood vessels). Mostafavi has been serving Palm Beach County and Treasure Coast patients for 25 years. She received her general surgery and vascular fellowship training at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

DR. ROBERT SCOMA BECOMES FIRST THORACIC SURGEON IN PALM BEACH COUNTY TO COMPLETE 1,000 ROBOT-ASSISTED SURGERIES
Dr. Robert Scoma earns the record-breaking achievement with Tampa General Hospital, providing world-class care in thoracic surgical oncology.
West Palm Beach, FL – July 12, 2023– The Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Cancer Institute’s Dr. Robert Scoma has become the first thoracic surgeon in Palm Beach County, and one of the first in South Florida, to complete 1,000 robot-assisted surgeries. Thoracic surgery involves the organs of the chest, as well as the esophagus, the trachea, rib cage, and breastbone.
By completing his first robotic-assisted surgery in 2009, Scoma has performed more than 100 per year, with 40 already completed in 2023. Most of the procedures have been pulmonary lobectomies (removal of an entire lobe of the lung). Scoma has also used the da Vinci Surgical System to perform lung wedge resection, mediastinal (area between the lungs) mass resection, thymectomy (removal of the thymus gland), repair of hiatal hernia (part of the stomach pushes into the chest cavity), and other oncological procedures.
“I am incredibly honored and humbled to achieve this accomplishment as part of the TGH Cancer Institute,” Scoma said. “I could not have marked this milestone without my team’s commitment to providing patients with world-class, comprehensive and personalized care.”

IN PRECLINICAL STUDY, SYLVESTER RESEARCHERS TARGET TREATMENT-RESISTANT PROSTATE CANCER WITH ORAL CHEMOTHERAPY THAT WORKS 2 WAYS
The chemotherapy drug cisplatin is bound to a tumor-directed nanoparticle in an approach that dismantles cancer cells’ energy source and DNA
JULY 12, 2023 – Researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine have developed a first-of-its-kind, orally administered drug to disrupt prostate cancer cells’ metabolism and deliver the chemotherapy agent cisplatin directly into treatment-resistant prostate cancer cells.
They validated their targets in human prostate cancer biopsies, tested the new approach in human cancer cells and a mouse model of prostate cancer, showed that it is safe and effective in shrinking treatment-resistant cancers, and published results as the cover article in ACS Central Science, an American Chemical Society journal.
Although cisplatin is one of the most potent chemotherapy drugs in use against a variety of cancers, it has not been effective in treating prostate cancer. The Sylvester researchers’ compound – Platin-L – works in two ways, breaking down a process that malignant prostate cancer cells use to fuel their growth, and delivering cisplatin directly into treatment-resistant cancer cells.
“We believe Platin-L can circumvent these resistance mechanisms,” said Shanta Dhar, Ph.D., assistant director of Technology and Innovation at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, an associate professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, a researcher, co-leader of Engineering Cancer Cures, and the study’s senior author.

Ryan H. Sobel, M.D. OVERCOMING HPV- THROAT CANCER WITH BROWARD HEALTH
July 12, 2023 – It was a shocking moment when 56-year-old Bill found out that the lump on his neck was cancer caused by the Human papillomavirus (HPV).
“It was surreal,” Bill recalled. “I know these things happen to other people, but I was in such great shape that I didn’t think they should be happening to me!”
A biopsy of the neck mass revealed cancer cells positive for HPV-16, a strain of HPV that poses a high risk of developing throat cancer. Bill’s cancer started in his tonsil and spread to a lymph node that he could feel in his neck.
The retired engineer and non-smoker, who considered himself healthy and fit, was in disbelief.
Traditionally, throat cancer was considered a smoking-related cancer, which required intensive treatment. Today, HPV-related throat cancer is becoming more common. Even though the HPV-related version of throat cancer has a better treatment outcome and response to treatment, it had been treated with the same aggressive regimen. Patients then struggled to cope with the side effects of the treatment.

NIH-funded trial underscores need for more research to head off high myopia
July 13, 2023 – Use of low-dose atropine eyedrops (concentration 0.01%) was no better than placebo at slowing myopia (nearsightedness) progression and elongation of the eye among children treated for two years, according to a randomized controlled trial conducted by the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG) and funded by the National Eye Institute (NEI). The trial aimed to identify an effective way to manage this leading and increasingly common cause of refractive error, which can cause serious uncorrectable vision loss later in life. Results from the trial were published in JAMA Ophthalmology.

CMS PROPOSES POLICIES TO EXPAND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH ACCESS AND FURTHER EFFORTS TO INCREASE HOSPITAL PRICE TRANSPARENCY
July 13, 2023 – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is proposing to expand access to behavioral health services through coverage of intensive outpatient services — an intermediate level of behavioral health care. To support practices to help curtail shortages of essential medicines, CMS is seeking comment in this rule on potential payment adjustments to hospitals for the additional costs of establishing and maintaining a buffer stock of essential medicines. CMS is also taking steps to increase hospital compliance with the requirements, to improve automated access to standard charge information, to further strengthen enforcement, and to improve the ability of the public to understand and meaningfully use hospital charges for items and services. Additionally, CMS is proposing actions to promote health equity for tribal communities. These proposals are included in the calendar year (CY) 2024 Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) and Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) proposed rule released today.
