Broward Health Neurosurgeon Helps Patient Reverse Debilitating Brain Condition
NOVEMBER 19, 2025 – Barry Meltz, 75, of John Knox Village in Pompano Beach, called it fate when he had a chance encounter with Shaye Moskowitz, M.D., a Broward Health neurosurgeon who was making hospital rounds at Broward Health North.
Barry lived his life with determination and grace. A childhood survivor of polio, he carried some lingering weakness in his legs but never let it define him. For nearly 40 years, he traveled the world, stayed active, and enjoyed cooking, exercising and playing Mahjong, until everything changed in an instant.
“I was a mess,” Barry recalled. “My aide, Doreen, quickly realized I was losing my physical and cognitive abilities. I couldn’t move. I was in a wheelchair, and my mind wasn’t clear. I didn’t even know what was happening, so Doreen called 911.”
Barry was brought to Broward Health North, where his scans revealed a buildup of fluid in his brain. That caught the attention of Dr. Moskowitz.
Following further testing, Dr. Moskowitz diagnosed Barry with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a potentially reversible and often overlooked condition frequently mistaken for dementia or Parkinson’s disease.

Cleveland Clinic Pledges $2 Million to Support Regional Food Banks
Funding to local food organizations in Ohio, Florida and Nevada will address hunger for families in need
November 17, 2025- Today, Cleveland Clinic has announced a $2 million gift to bolster support for hunger relief efforts across the communities it serves in Ohio, Florida and Nevada.
The funding will benefit nine Feeding America member food banks that share Cleveland Clinic’s commitment to addressing social drivers of health, including food insecurity.
According to Feeding America, 47 million people in the U.S. face food insecurity, and 1 in 5 children lack enough food to grow up strong. The need spans income levels, with 70 percent of those experiencing hunger living above the poverty line. Without consistent access to nutritious meals, children may struggle to grow and learn, and adults face increased risks of chronic health conditions.
“Food insecurity is a challenge that touches every community we serve,” said Vickie Johnson, Chief Community Officer at Cleveland Clinic. “Nutritious food is not a privilege, it’s a necessity. This donation will help ease the pressure families experience and remove barriers to living healthier lives.”
This gift aims to ease financial pressures for families facing food insecurity during a season when financial burdens mount and food needs grow more urgent. READ MORE

Cleveland Clinic Dedicates the Jeffrey and Patricia Cole Pavilion at Cole Eye Institute
November 19, 2025 – Cleveland Clinic celebrated the dedication of the Jeffrey and Patricia Cole Pavilion at Cole Eye Institute during a ceremony at the site. The new 150,000-square-foot building is part of an expansion project that included the construction of the building, alongside the renovation and redesign of the existing 130,000-square-foot Cole Eye Institute building.

Mr. Cole, along with his company Cole National, which was the world’s largest provider of commercial vision care services and based in Cleveland for 60 years, also contributed the lead gift that founded the Cole Eye Institute in 1999. The Coles, native Clevelanders, are long-time residents of Palm Beach, Florida.

Mayo Clinic scientists create tool to predict Alzheimer’s risk years before symptoms begin
November 13, 2025 – Mayo Clinic researchers have developed a new tool that can estimate a person’s risk of developing memory and thinking problems associated with Alzheimer’s disease years before symptoms appear. The research, published in The Lancet Neurology, builds on decades of data from the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging — one of the world’s most comprehensive population-based studies of brain health.
The study found that women have a higher lifetime risk than men of developing dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a transitional stage between healthy aging and dementia that often affects quality of life but still allows people to live independently. Men and women with the common genetic variant, APOE ε4, also have higher lifetime risk.
Predicting Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer’s disease is marked by two key proteins in the brain: amyloid, which forms plaques, and tau, which forms tangles. Drugs recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration remove amyloid from the brain and can slow the rate of disease progression for people with MCI or mild dementia.
“What’s exciting now is that we’re looking even earlier — before symptoms begin — to see if we can predict who might be at greatest risk of developing cognitive problems in the future,” says Clifford Jack, Jr., M.D., radiologist and lead author of the study.

“Earning this accreditation underscores our dedication to ensuring older adults receive safe, compassionate, and specialized care,” said Caitlin George, Administrative Director of Emergency Services for NCH. “Our teams have worked diligently to make our emergency departments more responsive to the needs of seniors and this recognition reflects that effort to enhance the emergency experience for older adults.”

AMA launches grant program to support physician-led community health
November 13, 2025 – The American Medical Association (AMA) today launched the Community Health Impact Lab Micro Grants Program, a new national initiative to support physician-led projects that improve health outcomes at the community level.
Through the program, the AMA will award $50,000 grants to 20 physician-led projects that address urgent health challenges in areas with limited access to care. Projects may focus on issues such as food insecurity, maternal health, caregiving support, or other local health needs identified by U.S.-based physicians working in their local communities.
The goal is to spark physician-driven innovation that delivers practical, measurable improvements in community health—and to identify ideas that can be expanded or replicated to benefit more patients nationwide.
“Doctors see every day how factors like food insecurity, housing, and transportation access directly affect patients’ health—often having broad impact across entire communities,” said AMA CEO and Executive Vice President John Whyte, MD, MPH. READ MORE
