Presented in partnership with Women in Medicine, the award honors female physicians and leaders who challenge the status quo and reshape oncology through innovation in research, care, advocacy and leadership. Dr. Kobetz, who also serves as vice president for health promotion and chief well-being officer at Sylvester, embodies that definition, not by disrupting for disruption’s sake, but by confronting questions others avoid and translating inquiry into measurable impact.
“I am not afraid to fail,” she said. “The real failure comes in not even attempting to ask the question. I’ve learned to embrace the discomfort that comes with uncertainty. It’s in those spaces that we stretch beyond our potential.”
That conviction has shaped Dr. Kobetz’s work. Two Holy Cross Health Cancer Patients Share Their Survival Stories
According to the American Cancer Society, more than 2.1 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year. When a patient receives a cancer diagnosis, they begin to feel their mortality. Thanks to earlier diagnosis and advances in treatments and technology, survival rates have increased over the last six decades.
The National Cancer Institute Office of Cancer Survivorship states there are more than 18 million cancer survivors in the nation. In recognition of National Cancer Survivors Month in June, two local survivors have bravely shared their personal stories to raise awareness about listening to one’s body when noticing symptoms and the importance of seeking prompt medical attention.
When Coral Springs resident Yvette Brown spotted blood in her stool and experienced constipation, she knew something was wrong. Yet, at age 41 at the time, she was stunned to learn she had colon cancer. “I knew my two children weren’t ready yet in their stage of life to be in this world without me, so I had to fight to make sure I was able to be here for them,” she said.
Holy Cross Medical Group gastroenterologist Patrick Amar, MD took the lead on her case. Through surgery, the cancer in her colon was removed and 15 years later, she remains cancer-free. Not only is she there for her two children, but she’s since welcomed a grandchild who she gets to see grow up.

Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida Announces 2026 Gold Award Recipients
June 3, 2026 – Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida recognized 22 outstanding young women from Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Okeechobee and Indian River counties with the prestigious 2026 Girl Scouts Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. The annual Gold Award Ceremony was recently held at the Doubletree by Hilton Deerfield Beach.
During the ceremony, each Girl Scout was presented with a Gold Award pin by a special adult who supported her through her project and Girl Scout career. In return, the girl presented this adult with the Companion Gold Award pin.
Awarded to only 5% of eligible Girl Scouts nationwide, the Gold Award recognizes girls in grades 9 through 12 who demonstrate exceptional leadership, dedication and commitment to creating meaningful, sustainable change in their communities. Twelve of this year’s recipients are graduating high school seniors, six completed their projects last summer and returned to participate in the event following their first year in college, and four are current high school underclassmen
To earn the Gold Award, each Girl Scout must identify a community issue she is passionate about and lead a large-scale service project designed to create lasting impact. The Gold Award Class of 2026 took on issues including literacy; mental health; breast cancer, concussion, autism and endometriosis awareness; food insecurity and waste; foster care; and environmental sustainability. Their collective projects contributed more than 2,500 community service hours and partnered with dozens of local organizations to impact thousands of lives close to home and as far away as Tanzania in Africa.

HCA Florida Blake Hospital expands graduate medical education program to strengthen physician pipeline
HCA Florida Blake Hospital is expanding graduate medical education program with new fellowships that will help grow local access to specialized care and build a stronger future healthcare workforce for Manatee County and surrounding communities.
June 04, 2026 – HCA Florida Blake Hospital is expanding its Graduate Medical Education (GME) program with new specialty programs designed to help develop physicians completing their residency and fellowship training, attract top medical talent to the hospital and strengthen the physician pipeline for Manatee County and surrounding communities.
The hospital received initial accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for its clinical cardiac electrophysiology fellowship and pain medicine fellowship, marking an important expansion of HCA Florida Blake Hospital’s growing GME platform. The new programs will begin July 1, with the start of the new GME academic year. The hospital will train three physicians in these new specialties, and the overall GME program will grow from 95 to 104 residents and fellows. As part of their training, residents and fellows work alongside experienced physicians and care teams, helping support patient care while gaining hands-on experience in a hospital-based learning environment.
Clinical cardiac electrophysiology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders, while pain medicine focuses on evaluating and treating patients with acute, chronic and complex pain conditions. The addition of these programs expands opportunities for physicians to receive advanced specialty training in Bradenton while supporting the hospital’s broader efforts to recruit and retain talented providers to the area.

AMA president reflects on the power of purpose in medicine
JUNE 5, 2026- In his final address as president of the American Medical Association (AMA), Bobby Mukkamala, MD, delivered a deeply personal message to physicians and medical students during the AMA’s Annual Meeting about the essential role of purpose—both personal and collective—in medicine.
Drawing on a year shaped by recovery from a brain tumor diagnosis, Dr. Mukkamala, an ear, nose, and throat physician from Flint. Mich., reflected on how purpose—as a physician, advocate, and patient—helped guide him through a year of personal and professional challenges. At the same time, he celebrated the AMA’s advocacy on behalf of patients and physicians, describing organized medicine as a powerful force for improving health and advancing meaningful change.
Dr. Mukkamala emphasized that purpose is what drives physicians to care for patients, strengthen communities, and build a better health system. He pointed to the AMA’s efforts to protect access to care, defend science and public health, strengthen trust in medicine, advance prevention and whole-person health, and reduce burdens that undermine physician well-being and patient care.
“Purpose is all around us—in our patients, in our communities, in the experiences that energize us and push us to make things better.” Dr. Mukkamala said.
Closing his presidency, he urged physicians to remain engaged and united in the work ahead.
“I am proud of what we have accomplished together this past year—and the fight that we are in.
That purpose has sustained me,” he said. “When physicians stand together, we are the most powerful force for good in medicine.”
Dr. Mukkamala’s year as AMA president ends on Tuesday, June 9 when he will become immediate past president of the organization.

JUNE 5, 2026 – Addressing physicians gathered at the American Medical Association’s (AMA) Annual Meeting, AMA CEO John Whyte, MD, MPH, outlined a strategic vision for strengthening physician leadership and ensuring the profession helps shape the future of healthcare amid rapid technological, political, and societal change.
In remarks to the AMA House of Delegates, Dr. Whyte emphasized the AMA’s work will be guided by a commitment to serve as the leading and most trusted partner for physicians as they navigate the future of medicine.

Hospitals Are Leading Efforts to Make Healthcare More Affordable

JUNE 5, 2026 – Affordability is front and center in conversations across the country, as Americans feel pressure from the rising cost of living and policymakers search for solutions. Hospitals and health systems share their concerns because we see the impact of high costs every day on the patients and families we serve. Hospitals are not waiting to do their part. Across the nation, they are already implementing efforts to make healthcare more affordable and accessible, as well as providing solutions that could lower costs across the entire healthcare system.
How Hospitals and Health Systems Are Improving Healthcare Affordability and Access
Hospitals are investing heavily in prevention and care coordination programs that help patients manage chronic conditions and reduce avoidable hospital visits. New models like hospital-at-home, telehealth and remote monitoring are bringing care directly to patients, making it easier to get the right care at the right time.
At the same time, innovation and technology are driving more efficient care. Electronic health records and data-driven tools help clinicians catch problems earlier, avoid duplicative tests and coordinate treatment more effectively. Predictive analytics and advanced screening detect disease sooner, while digital alerts reduce preventable admissions, infections and complications. These innovations are not just improving outcomes, they also are reducing costs for patients, families and the healthcare system as a whole.
Understanding the Financial Challenges Hospitals Face: Rising Expenses, Medicare Shortfalls and Administrative Burdens
As we talk about lowering costs and ensuring access to care, it’s important that policymakers and all stakeholders understand the environment hospitals are operating in — and the pressures they face. Hospitals are unique within the healthcare system. They have the responsibility of providing a full spectrum of services — emergency care, surgery, diagnostics and inpatient treatment — 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They must maintain highly trained staff, advanced equipment and readiness for any emergency, whether that’s a natural disaster or mass-casualty event.
That responsibility comes with substantial fixed costs. And today, those costs are rising rapidly. Spending on medical supplies and technology has climbed sharply and drug expenses are increasing — even while workforce costs account for roughly 60% of hospital spending. In 2025, hospital expenses increased 7.5%, about twice as fast as hospital reimbursements for patient care, meaning hospitals absorbed much of the increase instead of shifting it to patients or payers. Hospitals also are caring for sicker, more complex patients, while coping with a payment system that does not fully reflect the cost of care, particularly as government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid reimburse below cost.

NIH Selects Dr. Steven Schiff as Director of Fogarty International Center, Associate Director for International Research
JUNE 4, 2026- National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya, M.D., today announced the selection of Steven Schiff, M.D., Ph.D., as the next director of the Fogarty International Center (FIC) and NIH associate director for international research. Schiff began his role on June 4, 2026.
A pediatric neurosurgeon and global health researcher, Schiff currently serves as the Harvey and Kate Cushing Professor of Neurosurgery, vice chair for global health in the Department of Neurosurgery, and professor of epidemiology and of electrical and computer engineering at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
“Dr. Schiff brings nearly 40 years of experience in global health, epidemiology of microbial diseases, and pediatric neurological disorders to NIH,” said Dr. Bhattacharya. “His groundbreaking work on developing the concept of predictive personalized public health will bring a cutting-edge scientific mind to the NIH leadership team. Additionally, I extend my thanks to Peter H. Kilmarx, M.D., who has been serving as the acting director of FIC since early 2025.”
As director of FIC, Schiff will lead NIH’s global health research efforts by supporting collaborations between U.S. and international investigators, strengthening partnerships among research institutions worldwide, and training future global health scientists. He will oversee the center’s approximately $95 million annual budget, most of which supports research grants and training programs.
Schiff has authored nearly 250 scientific publications spanning neural control engineering, sustainable health engineering, and global health. He founded the Center for Neural Engineering at Penn State University and helped develop the Center for Global Neurosurgery at Yale.

Tampa General Hospital Opens TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center
The program provides comprehensive, physician-supervised medical care for patients with obesity in the Palm Beaches.
May 18, 2026– Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has launched a new clinic, TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center, to deliver comprehensive, physician-supervised medical care for adults with obesity in the Palm Beaches and on the Treasure Coast. The center is supported by the advanced clinical expertise and coordinated services of Tampa General Hospital, Florida’s premier academic health system.
Dr. David B. Schwimmer, a gastroenterologist board certified in obesity medicine, will serve as medical director and supervise the clinic, which will be located in Palm Beach Gardens and West Palm Beach.
The TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center serves adults age 18 and older who meet one or more of the following criteria:

FATHER’S DAY TAKES ON A NEW MEANING AS COMMUNITY-BASED CONNECTIONS, INC.
PRESENTS FATHERHOOD WEEK 2026 ACROSS BROWARD AND PALM BEACH COUNTIES JUNE 16-28
Multi-day initiative will highlight healing, mental health awareness, economic empowerment, and family strengthening through community-centered events
June 1, 2026 – Community-Based Connections, Inc. (CBCI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to delivering youth development, family strengthening, and community empowerment services to underserved populations, will present Fatherhood Week 2026, a multi-day community initiative taking place June 16–26 throughout Broward and Palm Beach counties. In recognition of Father’s Day, the community program is centered around the theme Fathers, Faith & Family.
The impactful initiative will provide fathers, father figures, and men throughout South Florida with opportunities to engage in conversations focused on mental health awareness, economic empowerment, family connection, domestic violence awareness, mentorship, and community support. It will focus on healing through shared experiences to break generational trauma, promote brotherhood and accountability, and build stronger support systems for fathers and families.

LEE HEALTH: Free Autism Screening for Young Children
May 28, 2026 — Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida offers free monthly autism spectrum disorder screenings for toddlers 18 months to five years of age.
The next screenings will be held on June 10 and June 12 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Pediatric Specialist Office, 15901 Bass Road, Suite 102, Fort Myers.
It is estimated that one in every 31 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined.
Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well.
The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The screenings are administered by an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, who has extensive training and experience in typical child development and developmental disorders.
