INTERNATIONAL CLINICAL TRIAL IS FIRST TO DEMONSTRATE SAFETY OF ABLATIVE RADIOTHERAPY FOR INOPERABLE PANCREAS CANCER
June 22, 2023 – Miami Cancer Institute, a part of Baptist Health, has seen significant benefits of using ablative radiotherapy using the MRIdian guided radiation device to treat inoperable pancreatic cancer. As one of the highest accruing centers to the first-of-its-kind international phase II SMART trial, researchers at Miami Cancer Institute are hopeful these results are indicating safe and effective radiation, to eradicate pancreatic cancer overall.
The MRIdian enables high ablative radiation doses ― doses high enough to completely eradicate tumors ― to be precisely delivered in as few as one to five outpatient sessions. The same high-dose regimen delivered on traditional radiation devices using CT scans for targeting has previously been deemed unsafe in prior clinical trials and therefore lower non-ablative radiation dose is currently the standard of care for inoperable pancreas cancer, which improves safety but at the expense of treatment efficacy.

THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH ISSUES MOSQUITO-BORNE ILLNESSES ADVISORY
Four malaria cases in Sarasota county have been treated and recovered.
June 26, 2023 – The Florida Department of Health (Department) is issuing a statewide mosquito-borne illness advisory following four confirmed and recovered local cases of malaria in Sarasota County. All individuals have been treated and have recovered. Malaria is transmitted through infected mosquitoes. Residents throughout the state should take precautions by applying bug spray, avoiding areas with high mosquito populations, and wearing long pants and shirts when possible – especially during sunrise and sunset when mosquitos are most active.
The Department continues to work closely with local partners and county mosquito control. Aerial and ground mosquito spraying continues to be conducted in these areas to mitigate the risk of further transmission.
In Florida, Malaria is transmitted through infected Anopheles mosquitoes. The cause of malaria in these cases has been identified as the Plasmodium vivax species. Effective treatment is readily available through hospitals and other health care providers. Individuals in this area with symptoms of fever, chills, sweats, nausea/vomiting, and headache should seek immediate medical attention.

VAXXINITY ANNOUNCES UB-312 SUCCESSFULLY MET PRIMARY OBJECTIVES OF PHASE 1 CLINICAL TRIAL IN PARKINSON’S DISEASE
UB-312 was immunogenic in patients with early Parkinson’s disease.
UB-312 was generally safe and well-tolerated.
Results are consistent with conclusions from Phase 1 Part A and preclinical studies, and support advancement of UB-312 into further clinical development.
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., June 22, 2023 — Vaxxinity, Inc. (Nasdaq: VAXX), a U.S. company pioneering the development of a new class of medicines today announced positive results from Part B of its Phase 1 clinical trial of UB-312, an investigational vaccine for Parkinson’s disease (PD), demonstrating UB-312 was well-tolerated and induced anti-alpha-synuclein (aSyn) antibody responses in participants with early PD, meeting the primary objectives of the trial.
“These positive Phase 1 results demonstrate several important features necessary for an immunotherapy against Parkinson’s disease and other synucleinopathies to be successful, and represent a further proof-of-principle for Vaxxinity’s platform in chronic disease,” said Mei Mei Hu, CEO of Vaxxinity. “UB-312 was observed to safely break immune tolerance, inducing antibodies against toxic aggregated forms of alpha-synuclein. Importantly, these antibodies crossed the blood brain barrier, and the data also suggest potential target engagement in the periphery, where pathological alpha-synuclein is known to be concentrated. Together these results support the further development of UB-312 in a Phase 2 clinical trial. We continue to view UB-312 as a promising candidate for the prevention or disease modification of Parkinson’s disease globally.”
UB-312 is an investigational synthetic peptide vaccine that targets toxic forms of aggregated aSyn to address PD and other synucleinopathies. Alpha-synuclein plays a central role in synaptic functions and regulation of neurotransmitter release. The accumulation and aggregation of misfolded aSyn in the brain is considered to be a key factor in the development and progression of PD.

CLEVELAND CLINIC-LED TRIAL SHOWS THAT CHOLESTEROL-LOWERING DRUG REDUCES HEART-RELATED EVENTS, INCLUDING DEATH, IN STATIN-INTOLERANT PATIENTS WITH ELEVATED CARDIOVASCULAR RISK
Patients had risk factors but no pre-existing heart disease
Findings from a Cleveland Clinic-led clinical trial showed that the use of bempedoic acid (a cholesterol-lowering drug) in statin-intolerant patients – who have not yet had a cardiovascular event, but do have risk factors, like diabetes – significantly reduced the chance of death from heart disease and other major adverse cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes.
Findings were presented today during a Late Breaking Science Session at the American Diabetes Association’s 83rd Annual Scientific Session in San Diego and simultaneously published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Back in March, results from the CLEAR Outcomes trial showed that bempedoic acid reduced adverse cardiovascular outcomes in 14,000 statin intolerant patients. Within this CLEAR trial, there were 4200 patients enrolled with high risk for heart disease but no previous cardiovascular events (primary prevention). After six months of treatment, bempedoic acid, compared with placebo, reduced LDL cholesterol by 23.2% and reduced inflammation measured by C-reactive protein by 22.7%. In this primary prevention subgroup, there was also a 30% reduction in major cardiovascular events, a 39% reduction in death from heart disease and a 39% decline in heart attacks.

MAYO CLINIC USES GENOMIC TESTING BROADLY FOR RARE DISEASES, IMPROVES PATIENT CARE
June 26, 2023 – A Mayo Clinic study published in Journal of Translational Medicine evaluated the use of genomic testing broadly for rare diseases. With the increased use of genomic testing such as multi-gene panels, exome sequencing and genome sequencing in the past decade, there is a greater opportunity to better diagnose and treat patients with rare diseases. According to the National Institutes of Health, as many as 10,000 distinct rare diseases exist and an estimated 25-30 million Americans are affected by one of them.
In the four-year Mayo Clinic study researchers evaluated 1,152 patients with rare diseases, did genomic testing on 855 patients and also evaluated the tested patients’ family members. The overall rate where they either determined or likely determined the cause of the disease was 17.5% and as high as 66.7%, depending on the phenotype (set of observable characteristics of a person resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment).
As a result, 42.7% of the solved or likely solved patients had changes in their medical approaches based on the genomic testing results.

BIDEN-HARRIS ADMINISTRATION LAUNCHES INITIATIVE TO IMPROVE CANCER OUTCOMES IN LOW-INCOME AREAS
On June 26 ,2023 the Biden-Harris Administration awarded $50 million to launch the Persistent Poverty Initiative, an initiative to alleviate the cumulative effects of persistent poverty on cancer outcomes by building research capacity, fostering cancer prevention research, and promoting the implementation of community-based programs. The Persistent Poverty Initiative is the first major program to address the structural and institutional factors of persistent poverty in the context of cancer. It is coordinated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These awards create five new Centers for Cancer Control Research in Persistent Poverty Areas that will advance key priorities of the Administration’s Cancer Moonshot — to reduce inequities in the structural drivers of cancer and prevent more cancers before they start by reducing tobacco use and making sure everyone has access to healthy food.
