BROWARD HEALTH BREAKS GROUND ON NEW MEDICAL OFFICE BUILDING AT BROWARD HEALTH NORTH
April 24, 2026- Broward Health has broken ground on a new medical office building at Broward Health North, 201 East Sample Road in Deerfield Beach, which will expand access to high-quality specialty care and outpatient services in northern Broward County. The event welcomed more than 100 dignitaries, including many elected officials from three municipalities (Deerfield Beach, Lighthouse Point and Pompano Beach), as well as numerous business and community leaders from across the region to celebrate Broward Health’s newest development.
“Yesterday’s groundbreaking marks an important milestone for Broward Health,” said Shane Strum, President and CEO of Broward Health. “This facility reinforces our commitment to meeting the long‑term healthcare needs of our community and to serving Broward County residents for generations to come.”
The six‑story, 127,033‑square‑foot facility, scheduled to open in 2027, is one of the health system’s first major new construction projects in almost 30 years and reinforces Broward Health’s long‑term commitment to supporting high‑quality care, innovation and improved patient outcomes.
Designed by The Beck Group in collaboration with DMZ Architects, the building will include 75 exam rooms, with infrastructure to expand to 123 as future demand grows.

| HHS Regional Director Visits FAU to Witness Health Impact in Action
April 23, 2026- Florida Atlantic University welcomed Samantha Brown-Parks, M.D., regional director for the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and a proud FAU alumna ’92, to its Boca Raton campus recently. The day-long visit showcased the university’s leadership in health workforce development, interdisciplinary research and community health innovation.
Hosted by FAU’s Office of Government Relations and Economic Development, the visit brought together senior federal health officials, university leadership, faculty, students and regional health care partners for a series of meetings, tours and discussions focused on strengthening the nation’s health care workforce pipeline, advancing public and behavioral health initiatives, and expanding community-based partnerships.
“Welcoming Dr. Brown-Parks back to her alma mater is a tremendous honor and a chance to show how Florida Atlantic University is transforming health care delivery, research, education and innovation throughout our region,” said FAU President Adam Hasner. “We are proud to demonstrate the real-world impact of our programs and partnerships, and share how Florida Atlantic is shaping the next generation of health professionals and scientists to meet critical workforce demands.”

Katherine Wong Named CFO for Memorial Regional and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospitals
APRIL 21, 2026- Katherine Wong, a financial leader with more than two decades healthcare industry experience, has been named chief financial officer (CFO) for Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. In that role, she will provide financial oversight and strategic/operational expertise to the Memorial Healthcare System facilities.
Wong was previously CFO at Memorial Hospital West, a position she held since 2023.
“Memorial Healthcare System has a long history of serving the community with excellence, and I’m excited to continue to support that mission,” said Wong, who earned an MBA at Nova Southeastern University. “Strong financial leadership allows us to invest in our people, expand access and ensure we deliver high quality care to the patients and families that rely on us.”

Florida Atlantic Hires Vice President for Institutional Advancement
April 24, 2026 – Florida Atlantic University has named Blake Davis as its new vice president for Institutional Advancement and chief executive officer of the Florida Atlantic University Foundation.
Currently serving as the vice president for development, principal and major gifts at Southern Methodist University, Davis brings more than 20 years of diverse experience in higher education development, serving both leading public and private universities. He has played a pivotal leadership role in multiple billion-dollar comprehensive campaigns, consistently driving results through a combination of strategic vision, relationship-building, and disciplined execution. He will begin at Florida Atlantic on June 1.

Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement Prevention and Research Center at Cleveland Clinic Names Sandra Darling, D.O., as Program Director
Board-certified preventive medicine physician to address women’s midlife brain health needs
Cleveland Clinic has appointed Sandra Darling, D.O., MPH, program director of the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement (WAM) Prevention and Research Center.
APRIL 23, 2026 – An accomplished physician and recognized leader in women’s brain health, Dr. Darling will lead the organization’s strategic vision and initiatives focused on Alzheimer’s disease prevention during midlife, when opportunities for risk reduction are greatest. Up to 45% of dementia cases worldwide may be preventable, according to the 2024 Lancet Commission on dementia prevention, which identified 14 modifiable risk factors across the lifespan, including several that emerge during midlife.
Dementia cases are expected to double by 2060. Women are disproportionately affected – not only do they account for nearly two‑thirds of Alzheimer’s disease cases, but they also make up approximately two‑thirds of caregivers for people living with dementia. Caregiving itself has been linked to an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

Cleveland Clinic-led Trial Shows Pulsed Field Ablation Procedure More Effective Than Medications for Persistent Atrial Fibrillation
AVANT GUARD is the first major study of PFA as first-line therapy for AF
APRIL 25, 2026 – A new Cleveland Clinic-led trial has found that patients with persistent atrial fibrillation who received pulsed field ablation (PFA) as a first-line treatment experienced significantly less recurrence of irregular heart rhythms compared to those who received antiarrhythmic-drug therapy.
Findings were presented today during a late-breaking science session at the Heart Rhythm Society’s annual meeting in Chicago and simultaneously published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of heart rhythm disorder, with at least 2.7 million Americans living with it. Persistent atrial fibrillation, defined as a continuous atrial fibrillation episode lasting more than seven days, affects up to 50% of those patients.
Compared to intermittent atrial fibrillation, persistent atrial fibrillation is associated with increased rates of adverse cardiovascular outcomes, such as premature death, blood clots, heart failure and increased rates of hospitalization.

HCA Florida Mercy Hospital Opens New Surgical Waiting Room Honoring the Sisters of St. Joseph
April 22, 2026 – HCA Florida Mercy Hospital celebrated the ribbon cutting of its new surgical waiting room on April 21, unveiling a $1.12 million, 3,590-square-foot renovation designed to create a comforting, faith-centered space for patients and families during some of their most vulnerable moments.
The newly dedicated waiting room serves families whose loved ones receive surgical care across nearly all major service lines, including general and robotic surgery. Nearly 12,000 patients move through the surgical area each year, with more than 30,000 patients and loved ones expected to spend time in the waiting room annually.
The space is dedicated to the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine, whose legacy has helped shape HCA Florida Mercy Hospital since its founding in 1950. The dedication also pays special tribute to Sister Elizabeth, who has served HCA Florida Mercy Hospital for more than 30 years in a variety of leadership roles and today serves on the hospital’s Board of Trustees.

HCA Healthcare Reports First Quarter 2026 Results
APRIL 24, 2026 – NASHVILLE, Tenn. – HCA Healthcare, Inc. (NYSE: HCA) today announced financial and operating results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2026.
Key first quarter metrics (all percentage changes compare 1Q 2026 to 1Q 2025 unless otherwise noted):
-Revenues increased 4.3 percent to $19.109 billion
-Net income attributable to HCA Healthcare, Inc. increased 0.6 percent to $1.620 billion
-Diluted earnings per share and diluted earnings per share, as adjusted, increased 10.9 percent to $7.15 per diluted share
-Adjusted EBITDA increased 1.9 percent to $3.802 billion
-Cash flows from operating activities increased 22.0 percent to $2.014 billion
-Same facility admissions increased 0.9 percent and same facility equivalent admissions increased 1.3 percent\
“The start of the year presented a dynamic environment for HCA Healthcare. I want to recognize our colleagues for continuing to demonstrate a remarkable ability to adapt to changing conditions and deliver for our patients, communities, and stakeholders,” said Sam Hazen, Chief Executive Officer of HCA Healthcare.
Revenues in the first quarter of 2026 totaled $19.109 billion, compared to $18.321 billion in the first quarter of 2025. Net income attributable to HCA Healthcare, Inc. totaled $1.620 billion, or $7.15 per diluted share, compared to $1.610 billion, or $6.45 per diluted share, in the first quarter of 2025.

New Emergency Room at Jackson Memorial Hospital Now Open: Important Directions for Patients and EMS
Effective at 7 a.m. today, April 23, Jackson Memorial Hospital’s new emergency room is now open and fully operational.
All patients and emergency medical services (EMS) should now use the new emergency room entrance at 1026 N.W. 19th St. for adult patients seeking treatment for mild to severe emergencies, like broken bones, strokes, heart attacks, and more. Pregnant women in need of emergency care should also use this new entrance. The children’s emergency room at Holtz Children’s Hospital has not moved and remains located on Northwest 17th Street.
The new emergency room will not impact Level I adult and pediatric trauma care at Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial, located adjacent to the new emergency room at 1800 N.W. 10th Ave., Miami, FL 33136. Ryder Trauma remains fully operational for adults and children with critical injuries.

AI, robotics and motion-preserving implants expand spine surgery options for patients
Mayo Clinic orthopedic surgeon describes advances in care for common back, neck problems
APRIL 23, 2026 — People worldwide seek medical care for back and neck pain, which can interfere with sleep, mobility and daily life. For individuals who need surgery for spinal conditions, advances in robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and motion-preserving implants are expanding treatment options and allowing for more personalized treatment, according to Ahmad Nassr, M.D., orthopedic surgeon at Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Nassr treats a wide range of spinal conditions that can affect mobility and cause pain, including:
-Herniated disk, a problem with one of the rubbery cushions, called disks, which sit between the bones that stack to make the spine.
--Spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the space around the spinal cord that can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves that travel through the spine.
Scoliosis, a side-to-side curve of the spine that can cause pain and breathing problems.
-Spinal tumors, lesions that start in or around the spine.
-Degenerative spine conditions that most commonly affect older adults, such as degenerative disk disease and adult degenerative scoliosis. These conditions can cause severe symptoms, including stiffness, numbness or tingling from nerve damage.
Research has shown that low back pain is the leading cause of disability around the world, and the elderly are one of the most vulnerable populations.

Mayo Clinic research supports targeted therapy to manage kidney complications, potentially enabling continuation of lifesaving immunotherapy
APRIL 22, 2026- Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have transformed treatment for many types of cancer. In some patients, however, ICIs are associated with immune-related complications that can affect the kidneys. These complications sometimes require care teams to pause or discontinue lifesaving treatment. A study led by Sandra Herrmann, M.D., an onconephrologist and researcher at Mayo Clinic, helps clarify how immune-related kidney inflammation develops and provides preclinical evidence supporting a targeted approach that could improve how these side effects are managed — and could potentially be prevented.
In the study, published in JCI Insight, Dr. Herrmann and a team of Mayo Clinic researchers explored how ICIs can trigger inflammation in the kidneys, which can lead to acute kidney injury. About 1 in 5 patients receiving ICIs develop acute kidney injury during treatment. While about 5% of these cases are most directly associated with ICI-induced interstitial nephritis, determining the cause can take time. Care teams must pause treatment for testing and, in some cases, discontinue ICI therapy — even if it’s treating their cancer effectively.

HSS-Founded Consortium Brings Global Orthopaedic Leaders Together in the Netherlands
APRIL 24, 2026- Orthopaedic surgeons, researchers, and health care executives from some of the world’s leading musculoskeletal institutions gathered in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, from April 15 to 18 for the 12th Conference of the International Society of Orthopaedic Centers, known as ISOC. Held every 18 months, the meeting has become a quiet but influential forum where global leaders in orthopaedic care compare approaches, share hard-earned lessons, and consider the future of their field.
ISOC was founded in 2006 by Thomas P. Sculco, MD, Surgeon-in-Chief Emeritus at Hospital for Special Surgery, and is currently led by Mathias P. Bostrom, MD, HSS Associate Surgeon-in-Chief. Though independently incorporated as a nonprofit organization, the society continues to draw significant administrative and intellectual support from HSS, including leadership from administrators Briana Bloom and Nicole Earley. Clinical trial finds no difference in fluid treatment options for pediatric sepsis
NIH-supported study is largest ever to compare fluid interventions to prevent major kidney damage in children treated for septic shock.
APRIL 24, 2026 – A large clinical trial supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) compared two commonly used treatments for pediatric patients treated for septic shock and found no difference in meaningful outcomes. The trial, which enrolled over 9,000 participants across five countries, sought to answer a longstanding question about which intravenous crystalloid fluid type was the superior option for children who were in septic shock, a life-threatening condition triggered by severe infection which requires immediate medical treatment.
“For decades, pediatricians have debated which is the best intravenous resuscitation treatment for children with severe infections who have suspected septic shock,” said Rohan Hazra, M.D., acting director of NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, which funded the study. “This largest-ever clinical trial for children treated for septic shock has immediate clinical application and allows physicians caring for these vulnerable patients to know they can confidently choose either intervention as a standard of care.”

Free Autism Screening for Young Children
April 22, 2026 — Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida offers free monthly autism spectrum disorder screenings for toddlers 18 months to five years of age.
The next screenings will be held on May 6 and May 15 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Pediatric Specialist Office, 15901 Bass Road, Suite 102, Fort Myers.
It is estimated that one in every 31 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined.
Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well.
