Cleveland Clinic Martin Health Emergency Departments Recognized for Excellence by Emergency Nurses Association

Hospitals earn ENA Lantern Award for improved patient care and staff well-being

September 2, 2025 – Cleveland Clinic Martin North Hospital’s and Tradition Hospital’s Emergency Departments (ED) have been recognized with the 2025 Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Lantern Award, which celebrates excellence in leadership, practice, education and advocacy that results in improved patient care and staff well-being.

Emergency departments throughout the country received the recognition, including Cleveland Clinic’s Martin North and Tradition Hospitals, now joining Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital and Martin South Hospital in this honor.

“These recipients demonstrate excellence in practice, interdisciplinary collaboration, and innovation that make their departments exceptional places for patients receiving care as well as for the staff working in them,” said ENA President Ryan Oglesby, PhD, MHA, RN, CEN, CFRN, NEA-BC. Fewer than 100 emergency departments were selected this year.

“We are incredibly proud to see our emergency departments honored with the Emergency Nurses Association Lantern Award,” says Susan L. Clark, Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer for Cleveland Clinic Martin Health. “This recognition is a testament to the unwavering dedication and exceptional patient care shown by our caregivers, guided by our nurse managers Lucey Guevara and Stacy Sweeney. It also highlights our commitment to innovative practice, the well-being of both patients and staff, and the passion and collaborative spirit that define our departments every day.”

What You Can Do Today for a Healthier Tomorrow

Healthy Aging Awareness Month

Why is keeping up with preventive healthcare important for healthy aging?

Your primary care provider is your top ally in fighting aging. Getting a head start is key to preventing disease and detecting health conditions early on when they are more easily treated. Women should keep up with their regular scheduled cancer screenings, such as Pap tests for cervical cancer (starting at 21) and mammograms for breast cancer (starting at 40), and everyone needs colonoscopies for colon cancer (starting at 45). Vaccines to prevent conditions like flu and shingles are also recommended, along with regular blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol screenings.

How much exercise is ideal for healthy aging?

Regular exercise benefits your mental health and may also slow the aging process in your brain. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise weekly. Walk, bike or even mow the lawn to get your heart rate up three to five times weekly. The CDC also recommends strength training at least twice a week. This helps to increase or maintain lean muscle mass, strengthening your bones and protecting your joints from injury. As you age, this will improve your quality of life and ability to do everyday activities.

Physicians: Help Florida Seniors Make Informed Decisions

Miami-Dade and Broward County Medical Associations along with other county associations in Florida are promoting this survey:

Your input is extremely valuable to Florida’s seniors as they evaluate their options between Traditional Medicare and the various Medicare Advantage Plans available.

Each October, seniors are inundated with marketing and promotional materials promoting the benefits of switching from Traditional Medicare to Medicare Advantage. However, these materials often lack sufficient information about the rights and protections seniors may be relinquishing by making that switch.

The feedback provided by physicians through this survey will be instrumental in helping Florida’s seniors make informed decisions. Physician organizations across the state are working to develop an annual guide to help seniors and their caregivers assess plan performance and choose the option that best fits their needs.

We encourage you to invite fellow physicians to complete the survey. The more data we collect, the more comprehensive and impactful this guide will be for Florida’s senior community.

Cleveland Clinic Finds Most Men Say Exercise Positively Impacts Their Mental Health, Confidence, and Sex Drive, but Nearly 1 in 3 Still Skip It

MENtion It survey shows that while 61% believe fitness impacts their sexual performance and sex drive, 30% report no regular exercise

September 3, 2025 – Most men recognize that staying active improves their energy, mood, and sex drive, but a new Cleveland Clinic survey showed that many still aren’t making exercise a regular habit.

The survey is part of Cleveland Clinic’s 10th annual MENtion It® campaign, which aims to encourage men to talk more openly about their health. This year’s focus was on the connection between exercise and overall well-being, including physical, mental, and sexual health.

“Men sometimes focus on their physical health, but mental and sexual health are just as important, and they’re all connected. When one area is off, it can affect the rest,” said Petar Bajic, M.D., director of the Men’s Health Section at Cleveland Clinic’s Glickman Urological Institute.

“Health challenges rarely happen in isolation and understanding that connection is key,” said Dr. Bajic. “The more we break down the stigma around discussing issues like sexual performance or stress, the better equipped men are to take control of their health and get the support they need.”

The national survey of 1,000 U.S. men 18 years of age and older found that 30% do not engage in regular physical activity, although of men who exercise regularly, 81% report changes such as fatigue/lower energy (47%), more stress or irritability (33%), and decreased mental well-being (37%) when they don’t exercise.

The survey also examined the link between men’s physical activity and sexual health. Among American men, 61% said their physical fitness directly impacts their sex drive or sexual performance.

Despite this, nearly 1 in 5 men reported experiencing low sexual desire in the past year (18%), and 15% reported difficulty with erectile dysfunction. These issues are often misunderstood or brushed aside as part of normal aging, but they can be linked to underlying health conditions.

STUDY: Evaluating Chatbot Accuracy in the Fast-Changing Blood Cancer Field

Justin Taylor, M.D., a physician-scientist at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Photo by Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

SEPT 3, 2025 – Patients are increasingly turning to AI for medical information and even advice, but how should they approach using AI-powered services? A new study published Sept. 3 in the peer-reviewed journal, Future Science OA, provides insight into this question for the fast-moving field of blood cancer, evaluating the quality of responses by ChatGPT to a set of 10 medical questions.

The study investigated ChatGPT 3.5, a version of the popular chatbot from OpenAI that was freely available when the study was conducted, in July 2024. Four anonymous hematology-oncology physicians evaluated the answers.

ChatGPT 3.5 performed best at general questions but struggled with providing information about newer therapies and approaches, the study showed.

“I would warn patients to have some skepticism, especially about answers dealing with specific types of cancer and treatments, and check with their doctor,” said senior author Justin Taylor, M.D., a physician-scientist at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

When Taylor was first training to be a physician, patients were increasingly using Google to search for medical information. Both patients and physicians adapted over time. Physicians learned how to direct patients to credible sources, and patients became more capable of finding accurate information.

He sees a similar process playing out with chatbots powered by large language models (LLMs). LLMs are trained on vast amounts of information. Ask a question, and the model will provide an answer. It’s often not accurate or complete, but the technology is evolving rapidly – and so is its uptake.

AMA advocacy may sideline faxes, physicians’ foe in prior authorization

September 3, 2025- CHICAGO — The American Medical Association’s effort to right size prior authorization recently received a boost when the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) agreed with the AMA to minimize care delays and inefficiencies.

The new HHS policies deliver on strong AMA advocacy, last highlighted in a September 2024 comment letter (PDF), that calls for a streamlined approach that embeds real-time electronic prior authorization into certified electronic health records (EHRs). The policies will standardize how physicians and payers exchange information, paving the way for faster decisions and more timely patient care. The policies require new certification criteria that hard-wire electronic prior authorization, real-time prescription benefit checks, and modernized e-prescribing into certified EHRs.

“Not to overstate it, but this new policy could contribute to the demise of the fax era in medicine. Prior authorization has tied up staff, delayed coverage and kept fax machines humming far past their prime due to insurance companies’ requirements,” said AMA President Bobby Mukkamala, M.D.

$2.4M NCI Award Funds Discoveries of Lymphoma Biology, New Potential Drug Target

Sylvester researchers believe GAK could be a powerful drug target to combat large B-cell lymphoma
SEPT. 3, 2025 – Researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, have received a four-year, $2.4M award from the National Cancer Institute to further explore their discovery of a new role for a protein, GAK, in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) – the most common form of blood cancer.

The research team, led by Jonathan Schatz, M.D., professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology at Sylvester and Hassan Al Ali, Ph.D., associate professor of neurological surgery and medicine at the Miller School of Medicine, will further explore this previously undiscovered aspect of cancer biology and investigate the possibility of treating DLBCL by targeting GAK. The team’s grant proposal was ranked in the top 1% of all submissions nationwide.

DLBCL makes up nearly a third of non-Hodgkin lymphoma cases, with more than 30,000 new diagnoses every year in the U.S. Front-line therapies for the disease can be very effective, but leave around one-third of patients uncured, Schatz said. Immunotherapies, including cellular therapy, can cure some patients with relapsed or refractory DLBCL, but many are left without other options to treat their disease.

Delray Medical Center is First Hospital in Southern Palm Beach County To Treat Patient with Aliya® Pulsed Electric Field Using the INUMI™ Flex Endoscopic Needle for Soft Tissue Ablation

September 3, 2025 – Delray Medical Center is the first hospital in Southern Palm Beach County to complete a procedure utilizing the Aliya ® Pulsed Electric Field Using INUMI ™ Flex Endoscope Needle for Soft Tissue Ablation.  The milestone procedure was completed by advanced bronchoscopist Dr. Stephen Milan.

The Aliya® PEF with the INUMI Flex Needle delivers high-voltage, high-frequency electrical currents endoscopically to the target lesion. The PEF energy disrupts the transmembrane potential of the cell, destabilizing the cell, and resulting in non-thermal cell death, while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue.

“This innovative technique is unlike anything we’ve seen,” said Dr. Milan. “Early clinical studies suggest the potential for releasing antigens that may stimulate an immune response. We are excited to be one of the first healthcare systems to offer this technology.”

Shorter, less intense radiation-chemo regimen effective for HPV-linked oropharyngeal cancer, Mayo study shows

September 1. 2025 – A Mayo Clinic study finds that a shortened, less intense course of radiation and chemotherapy after minimally invasive surgery for HPV-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPV+OPSCC) results in less toxicity, substantially lowering the rates of treatment-related side effects while maintaining high cure rates. The findings were published in The Lancet Oncology.

Portrait of Dr. Daniel Ma
Daniel Ma, M.D.
“This is a game-changer for patients,” says Daniel Ma, M.D., senior author of the study and head and neck radiation oncologist at Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center. “We’ve significantly reduced the burden of long-term side effects without compromising the effectiveness of the treatment. This shorter, less intensive regimen allows patients to return to their lives more quickly and with a better quality of life.”

New genetic biomarker flags aggressive brain tumors

September 1, 2025 –  Clinicians typically classify meningiomas — the most common type of brain tumor — into three grades, ranging from slow-growing to aggressive.

But a new multi-institutional study suggests that appearances may be deceiving. If a tumor shows activity in a gene called telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT), it tends to recur more quickly, even if it looks low-grade under the microscope.

The findings, published Sept. 1 in Lancet Oncology, could significantly change how doctors diagnose and treat meningiomas.

Photo of Mayo Clinic neurosurgeon Gelareh Zadeh, M.D., Ph.D.
Gelareh Zadeh, M.D., Ph.D.
“High TERT expression is strongly linked to faster disease progression,” says Gelareh Zadeh, M.D., Ph.D., a neurosurgeon at Mayo Clinic and senior author of the study. “This makes it a promising new biomarker for identifying patients who may be at greater risk of developing aggressive disease.”

An early warning sign
Meningiomas — tumors of the meninges, the protective tissue that surrounds the brain and spinal cord — are generally considered benign. But a small subset of these tumors has a mutation in the TERT gene, which is linked to faster growth and a shorter time before the tumor returns after treatment.

Scientists reveal novel therapeutic approach to combat pathogens like salmonella

September 3, 2025 — The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a growing global health threat that is prompting research into alternative methods of fighting infection. University of Florida scientists exploring host-directed therapies, an increasingly common approach which harness biological processes to combat infections, have identified a promising strategy to block pathogens from hijacking key components of cellular machinery. By combining the strategy with antibiotics, they managed to nearly eliminate bacterial loads within infected cells.

The scientists, whose research was funded by the U.S. Department of Defense and the National Institutes of Health, describe their findings within a new study published in mBio, a journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

Biotia and Hospital for Special Surgery Announce Collaboration to Advance Diagnostics for Prosthetic Joint Infections

September 2, 2025 – Biotia, a health technology company leveraging next-generation sequencing (NGS) and artificial intelligence (AI), and Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), the world’s leading academic medical center focused on musculoskeletal health, today announced a collaboration to advance diagnostics for detecting prosthetic joint infection.

Joint replacement surgery helps millions of people regain mobility and relieve pain every year. Like any surgery, however, there are risks—including prosthetic joint infection, which continues to be a challenge due to its diagnostic complexity.  “When a prosthetic joint infection is present, it can disrupt the recovery process and potentially risk the long-term benefits of joint replacement,” said Andy O. Miller, MD, Chief of Infectious Diseases at HSS. “Detecting and identifying prosthetic joint infection accurately and early is critical to timely intervention because it enables clinicians to potentially utilize less disruptive treatments. This can make all the difference in a patient’s outcomes and restoration of their quality of life.”
