UPDATED NEWS INFORMATION FROM THE LAST FOUR DAYS IN SOUTH FLORIDA |
ACCOUNTABLE CARE BENEFITS PATIENTS, PROVIDERS, AND BROWARD COMMUNITIES BY: Matt Muhart and Monica Puga, RN, MSN
MARCH 21, 2024- When considering the state of healthcare in America, it’s important to keep conclusions drawn by the Commonwealth Fund in mind. In 2021 the nonprofit compared healthcare systems in 11 high-income countries. The U.S. ranked dead last in performance, despite being the most technologically advanced and spending far more of its gross domestic product on care than any of the others.
How can this be? In simple terms, costs are too high and outcomes too poor. This reflects a failed, decades-old mindset that focuses on treating illness instead of providing whole-person care. We pay for services rendered instead of actual health outcomes, an approach that’s not only harmful, but unsustainable.
CHANGING THE PARADIGM
“Accountable care,” a strategic part of the value-based care model, came about to re-orient the U.S. healthcare delivery system from spending on services provided irrespective of outcomes (“fee-for-service”) toward rewarding providers for higher quality care and better patient outcomes. Inherent in the newer payment model is a risk-reward where providers (hospitals, physician groups, etc.) assume a degree of financial risk and are rewarded with a share of the savings earned by improving recoveries, preventing complications, and keeping patients healthy.

HEART OF GOLD: RITA CASE REACHES MILESTONE MILLION-DOLLAR MARK IN DONATIONS TO AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
Support highlights Rick Case Automotive Group’s ongoing commitment to the community
March 27, 2024 – As part of the ongoing commitment to and involvement in the community, Rita Case, along with the Rick Case Automotive Group, celebrated $1 million in donations to the American Heart Association (AHA), joining the select group of philanthropists in the organization’s Heart and Torch Circle within the Cor Vitae Society. The announcement was made during the recent Broward Heart Walk. Rita and her husband Rick laid the foundation for the Heart Walk and have continually dedicated time, leadership, support and creativity to help the American Heart Association (AHA) achieve their goals and take the organization to new heights.
It’s also because of the generous multi-year donation from Rita and the Rick Case Automotive Group that every underserved middle and high school in the Broward County public school system has received new, upgraded CPR in Schools Training Kits™. If performed immediately, CPR can double or triple a person’s chance of survival. The AHA wants all students and educators to learn CPR, placing more qualified lifesavers in local communities.

HSS RECEIVES EXTRAORDINARY $6.2 MILLION GRANT FROM THE TOW FOUNDATION TO EXPAND GENOMICS RESEARCH
MARCH 28, 2024- A $6.2 million grant from The Tow Foundation has been given to Hospital for Special Surgery, the world leader specialized in musculoskeletal health since 1863. The grant will enable HSS to apply the power of genomics to expand research in autoimmune diseases, tissue repair, and precision medicine being conducted by investigators in the David Z. Rosensweig Genomics Research Center. The Rosensweig Center was established in 2013 through the visionary partnership of The Tow Foundation and is named in honor of Rosensweig, a late long-time and beloved trustee of The Tow Foundation.
Building on its established leadership in functional genomics research in autoimmune and musculoskeletal conditions, the aims of the next phase of the Rosensweig Center are to elevate precision medicine efforts through the application of “big data” approaches, explore how the dysregulation of certain immune cells drives autoimmune diseases, and understand how immune cells regulate musculoskeletal stem cell function—an emerging field known as immunoregeneration.
The overarching goals of this research are to enhance patient mobility and decrease pain by increasing clinicians’ ability to predict the best treatments for individual patients, and to discover transformative new therapies through enhanced understanding of disease mechanisms and modulating immune musculoskeletal cell crosstalk. The Rosensweig Center will continue to focus on diseases that are major causes of pain and disability in which HSS has a unique combination of clinical and research expertise: rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, lupus, osteoarthritis, and anterior cruciate ligament injury, as well as the pathological bone loss that occurs in osteoporosis, arthritis, and orthopedic implant loosening.

SENATOR WARREN STATEMENT ON STEWARD HEALTH CARE’S SALE OF STEWARDSHIP HEALTH TO UNITEDHEALTH GROUP
March 26 ,2024 -Today, United States Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) released the following statement regarding Steward Health Care’s plan to sell its physician group Stewardship Health to UnitedHealth Group’s subsidiary Optum:
“After years of gross profiteering and mismanagement, Steward’s latest plan raises more serious questions about the future of the Massachusetts health care system. My top priority is ensuring Steward’s Massachusetts hospitals remain open. But Steward executives have no credibility, and I am concerned that this sale will not benefit patients or health care workers, or guarantee the survival of these facilities. It would be a terrible mistake for Steward to be allowed to walk away while looting Massachusetts hospitals one more time.
“Optum, a UnitedHealth Group subsidiary, is already the largest employer of physicians in the country – controlling over ten percent of American doctors – which means this deal raises significant antitrust concerns in Massachusetts and nationally. The Department of Justice is already reportedly investigating UnitedHealth’s relationship with its Optum health services arm.

HEALTHSTREAM SURVEY DISCOVERS UNDERUTILIZED OPPORTUNITY TO RECRUIT NURSES: STUDENT NURSE ROTATIONS
As presented by HealthStream this week to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 75% of student nurses say they were not informed of job opportunities where they completed a clinical rotation
NASHVILLE, Tenn.–March 28, 2024– HealthStream (Nasdaq: HSTM), a leading healthcare technology platform for workforce solutions, today published a new survey of over 5,100 nursing & clinical students who have completed a clinical rotation in 2023 that queried them about their experiences working in a healthcare organization as a student, their future professional careers, and what they valued the most from their clinical rotations. The “voice of the nursing student” with regard to clinical rotations and recruiting is of much interest to nursing schools and healthcare providers alike. The results of this survey were, therefore, initially presented to the Deans of the nation’s nursing schools at their annual meeting earlier this week.
Some of the key discoveries of HealthStream’s survey include the following—among nursing students who completed a clinical rotation in 2023:
-91% reported that their clinical rotation increased their confidence -75% reported that they were not recruited by the healthcare organization where they completed a rotation -74% did not have their first job lined up post-graduation at the time of their rotation
-62% said they would be highly likely to accept a position from the organization where they completed their rotation—if it were offered to them The #1 reason why nursing students said they’d accept a job offer was that they observed that “the staff enjoyed their working environment.”

“POST was created because children get cancer too,” shared Barbara Abernathy, founder of POST “It is a situation no family wants to be in, but with the support, they can focus on the fight ahead and not whether they have enough gas to get to treatment.”

HHS TAKES ADDITIONAL ACTIONS TO HELP PEOPLE STAY COVERED DURING MEDICAID AND CHIP RENEWALS
HHS Extends Special Enrollment Period to Help People Transition to the Marketplaces, Issues New Resources for Partners, and Publishes Guidance Reinforcing Key Federal Requirements
March 28, 2024 – Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), announced additional actions it is taking to help people maintain coverage as states continue Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) eligibility renewals, which restarted across the country last spring following a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today’s actions will continue and extend a previously announced flexibility to make it easier for people to transition to Health Insurance Marketplace®[1] coverage through 2024, help more people with Medicaid and CHIP navigate renewals, and reinforce important federal requirements that are crucial for protecting coverage in states during and beyond “Medicaid unwinding.”
CMS is extending a temporary special enrollment period (SEP) to help people who are no longer eligible for Medicaid or CHIP transition to Marketplace coverage in states using HealthCare.gov. The end date of this “Unwinding SEP” will be extended from July 31, 2024, to November 30, 2024, which will help more people leaving Medicaid or CHIP secure affordable, comprehensive coverage through the start of the next open enrollment period. This extension will be crucial to ensuring people remain covered, including in states that have given people additional time to renew their coverage, as CMS has recommended, to help eligible people stay enrolled. States with state-based Marketplaces can adopt similar extensions.
