The Cybersecurity Imperative for Hospitals
By Mary C. Mayhew
Last month, there were two bleak reminders of the ever-present threat of cyberattacks in health care and the need for constant vigilance as part of ongoing emergency preparedness and response investments. Hospitals are active participants in deterrence against what are not just meddlesome troublemakers but are often organized, highly sophisticated, state-sponsored threats to public infrastructure, health, and safety.
The first reminder was an unprecedented joint advisory by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, National Security Agency, FBI, and several international agencies warning of a state-sponsored cyber group in China. The organization, known by multiple names, has a history of theft of medical research related to infectious diseases, with the American Hospital Association warning that the group “may pose a particular risk to health care organizations that have significant unpatched internet-facing vulnerabilities and are engaged in sensitive medical research and innovation.”
The second was news that the Florida Department of Health was subject to a ransomware attack, possibly affecting 100 gigabytes of personal data in its Bureau of Vital Statistics.
Health care is the number one target for hackers and cyberterrorists, including nation-state actors. In 2023, there were more than 500 healthcare attacks, with the average cost of those attacks nearing $11 million, almost double the cost of attacks against the financial industry.

Your wearable says your heart rate variability has changed. Now what?
Mayo Clinic Healthcare expert explains what it means – and what to do with the information
July 30, 2024 – LONDON — Wearables measure several aspects of health, and heart rate variability might be one of those. It may be surprising when your device informs you that your heart rate variability is high or low, but what does it mean? Elijah Behr, M.D., a cardiologist at Mayo Clinic Healthcare in London, explains heart rate variability and how it factors into health.
What does heart rate variability measure?
“It measures the balance of nerve activity in the body and the way it relates to your heart rate and blood pressure,” Dr. Behr explains.
The nerve system that heart rate variability relates to is called the autonomic nervous system. It can be thought of as the balance between the effects of adrenaline in the body and the other part of the nervous system, the vagus nerve, Dr. Behr adds.
“From beat to beat, or over periods of time, heart rate variability can be measured in different ways to try to assess this balance within the autonomic nervous system,” he says.

Increases found in preteen suicide rate

If you are suicidal or in emotional distress, call or text 988 or chat online(link is external) to connect with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. The Lifeline provides 24-hour, confidential support to anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress.
July 30, 2024 – Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that rates of preteen suicide (ages 8-12) have been increasing by approximately 8% annually since 2008. These increases were most pronounced among female preteens, American Indian/Alaska Native or Asian/Pacific Islander preteens, and Hispanic preteens. While the overall number of preteen suicides is small compared to teen and adult populations, the researchers say the findings from this analysis underscore the need for age-appropriate and culturally responsive prevention efforts that include suicide risk screening and lethal means safety counseling. The findings also highlight the need to better understand, identify, and help preteens who may be at risk for suicide.
